Fantastic video. I don't think many people realise the amount of work that was done to get this project going. During construction all we saw was the work along George Street. Must make a journey soon.

We were done in Sydney from Newcastle and we caught the tram from Chinatown up to the Surry Hills station to go to the Belvoir theatre which was only a short walk - very good !

Good to see this sort of infrastructure going in. A combination of elevated metro railways, ground-level light railways and tramways, cycleways and walkways, along with underground tube lines will be the future in many places. Maybe in a couple of decades, maybe longer, but the day of the car will eventually come to an end.

Florence Gomer As a local to the city, the LR has been a complete disaster. It takes nearly an hour end to end to run. The trams themselves are fine, the actual infrastructure is fine... escept there’s literally no traffic light priority,, so it might as well have been a bus for all the good of it. The metro in Sydney has had its teething problems, but from what I’ve heard, it’s settling in fine, and the extension is underway already. Other than the already U/C Parrammatta light rail, which mostly just takes over an existing, low patronage rail line, I predict this will be the last LR expansion in Sydney for decades because of what a diasaster it’s been. It’s the city’s laughingstock right now.

If changing traffic light policy and rerouting cars away from it will solve the problem, that is what they must do.

@@sparkleshyguy85 Is that really that slow? I think that it is just the speed at which trams go when going along streets. I live in Zagreb, the capital of Croatia. My city has a large tram network with 15 daytime lines and here is a comparison of what I've seen on the internet with my experience. From a few videos of this line the travel time seem to be around 45 min and the length of the line is about 8.5 km. In my city, an 8.9 km line (number 3) has the scheduled travel time of 42-45 minutes, and a 8.3 km line (with rather spread out stops) (number 8) has the scheduled travel time of 29 minutes. These lines don't go through the old city centre so they encounter more traffic lights, especially number 3 which is why it takes so long. We don't have any mechanisms of overriding the traffic lights, the trams follow the regular traffic light patterns except that they are usually in their own lanes in the median or along the sidewalks. The patterns are just scheduled in a way to help the trams moving. All in all, for me, your new trams are on the slower end, but are not horribly slow. There is certainly room for improvement. I hope that they can reschedule the traffic lights eventually in a way that they don't delay the trams too much. They could also increase the speed limit through the downtown. Also, regarding your remark about just using a bus line, the LR/tram has one important advantage over the bus. Since it takes just one person to operate it, as opposed to 5 or so people required to operate the equivalent amount of buses, the operating costs should be lower. I guess that this is also the reason for them to go for such long trains. Even though the maintenance is higher than for a bus line, it should still be less than the salaries of more than a hundred extra drivers. The maintenance should also not be too high given that Sydney doesn't experience a lot of harsh weather conditions that would take a toll on the tracks.

It is very funny. I can remember the trams serving Randwick Racecourse. Then they ripped them all up as "outmoded" and now? At considerable expense they are replaced. I wonder what else that has been destroyed by "progress" will need to be reinstated at great cost.

Following your fantastic video I decided to take a trip on the light rail. Monday (30/12) afternoon, very few people on the tram, modern, clean but very slow. Almost an hour from Circular Quay to Randwick. One must take the full ride to appreciate what work has been done on this. Needles to say I took the bus back to the city, travel time almost half. Keep up with your great videos.

No wonmder they call it 'light'rail', more like full on railway rather than a tram. Pity. The old trams that were a single carraige, running down the middle of a road need to come back - bit like Melbourne and other cities do. Little surprise thier budget blew out the infrastructure needed is far greater than the old traditional trams.
@railfanworld

I think this is mostly due to what is not visible by which I mean everything that was under the line to be built, like utilities. Imagine laying tracks in George Street... I think they had some unfortunate surprises there!

@@railfanworld I don't live in Sydney any more and I assume it all got destroyed by the new trackwork, although the stretch that ran down George Street in The Rocks and around Millers Point is probably still there. They did a hasty cheap job of dismantling the huge Sydney tram network and basically just covered up the tracks with bitumen. btw The road surface underneath the bitumen is endgrain hardwood blocks. Extremely durable.

snuggles03 I know, but for some reason the trams in the city are packed. Let’s hope by March 2020, they consider upping speed limits once pedestrians and traffic are used to trams. I’ve seen people try and beat it. It never ends well for the tram or pedestrian.
