Safdies, Aster, Eggers, Chazelle, Jenkins and Gerwig - sure. Nomadland's great but Zhao just made fucking Eternals, so there goes almost all of her credit considering how awful that movie is. Get Out is a great film largely for its writing (which, to be fair, credit deservingly goes to Peele for), but the direction is nothing too spectacular, and his endeavors since haven't been that great. He's not a talentless hack or anything, he's just second to all the others listed.

These men aren't the future of cinema, they are the present. They are the now. And it's exciting. Just because Disney and Warner have taken over the block buster slots, doesn't mean jack shit. The idea of a theatre being the only way to experience cinema these days is just wrong. When i watch great personal films, stuff like Uncut Gems or Hereditary, I don't wanna watch it in a theatre with other people, I wanna watch it at home alone or with my friends. The only time I go to the theatre is to watch Super Hero shit because my friends invite me. If you think Cinema is dead, that just means you don't respect it enough to go out and find it.
