Good find, I looked for 7 years for a black Trans Am like car in the same condition. All I found was rusty rollers or fully restored cars for big $. I eventually settled for an SE Y81 roller. I haven’t started restoring it yet. Keep us updated on this car.

78's and 79's were famous for trunk water leaks. Really the only flaw
@danhoyland1422 жыл бұрын
Yeah and they sneak up on ya if you don’t know about them. If you buy one and happen to open the trunk later and notice a pile of rust but the trunk floor is solid, look up, and behind. The wheel houses are rotted out and so is the tail pan…aka 8 to 10 grand worth of work. At least now they make a repop tail panel for the 79-81 cars. My first project was a 79 trans am and I had to buy a solid roller and had to hide it at a friends from my wife, cut 13 inches from the back forward off, and weld it to my project car. Terrible experience but that’s how you learn.

I picked up a black/tan '79 403 car just this week. The original owner died on Christmas day and her husband just wanted it gone. It's in about the same shape as this car. No T-tops, standard interior, WS4 car. It has the same 7" snowflake wheels as this '77. I'm not going to restore it any time soon. I'm going to drive it with the patina. Of course I have to get it running first. It last was driven in 1997.

Had a red one, back in the day, got it in 1985, drove it for eight years. Had a wreak in 1993, over reacted about damage, could of been fixed. Kicked my self many years for not keeping her.

@SUNIKIGAMING3 жыл бұрын
That's great and all but 120 horse is a little sad man. Also keeping it original is a cool idea but there's alot of modern upgrades that will make it perform better and drive better. And isnt driveability the whole purpose of this? You dont have to throw 1000 horse into it but these cars were great looking but awful performing.
@SUNIKIGAMING3 жыл бұрын
If you want to keep it OG then you are not redoing it to drive. You are doing it as a collector piece.

I think the car was repainted once. The chrome window trims are supposed to be black for the SE models (the rear window has one black trim) and the shacker decal should be T/A 6.6.
@tommilitello1983 жыл бұрын
T/A 6.6 is the 400 equipped model,6.6 liter is a 403 olds motor
@natew88823 жыл бұрын
@@tommilitello198 Not true. Do your research.
@natew88823 жыл бұрын
The window reveal moldings are not chrome. They are anodized aluminum and painted black. The paint can come off over time. The 6.6 litre shaker decal is correct for this car. Do your research.
@dana.75003 жыл бұрын
@@natew8882 thanks, I did some research and seems like only the W72 400 came with the "T/A 6.6" shaker decal and the rest (L78 400 and the L80 403 Olds) had the "6.6 litre". Now some owners will say their TA L78 400 came with the T/A 6.6 decal from the dealer and the W72 TA people just want to be special. Beside missing the chrome valve covers, how do you know the engine is not a W72? As for the window trims, yes they are aluminum and yes the paint can come off over time, but to an almost perfect shine as seen here? I personally think they were replaced after a paint job at one point.
@natew88823 жыл бұрын
@@dana.7500 I think this car probably is an original l78 because it is an automatic. So the 6.6 liter on the Shaker is correct for this car. Now I will add some more information that will throw you off. I have an original 1977 Trans Am w72 4 Speed black on black non SE car with 78,000 original miles and the original 6.6 liter lettering on the original paint shaker. Apparently some were made this way.
@Smokr2 жыл бұрын
LOL Yup, that is almost certainly my cousin's ex-husband's car. He was a low-level drug dealer in Illinois until he had to hide in Tennesse and Kentucky, where his then GF and her son shot him and stuffed his body into the trunk for a week before they were caught. I was around that car every day for years, and I'm sure it's the same one. All the same junk stuffed on the dash and console and the Yosemitie Sam rugs. I put the Auto Zone side strips on it in 1991 or 2 as well as the CB radio the year before that because he wanted it to be just more the Bandit's car. It had a Balupunkt radio back then.

I got one just like the white one but no t top I’m thinking of selling it.
@kimdearrington2583 жыл бұрын
The biggest problem with this trans am verses the white one beside it is the fact that the white trans am has a pontiac 400 engine in it, while this one has an Oldsmobile 403 in it, and there is a difference in power, however slight it may be. The pontiac motor is a more powerful engine, and I have owned ,and built both of those engines, so I definitely know the differences. You can tell by the hood scoop on the cars. If it says TA 6.6, then it's a Pontiac engine, if it says 6.6 liter, then it's an Oldsmobile engine. Still a nice find!

It looks like a pontiac 400. The oldsmobile has the oil filler in the front of the engine
@sprsprtrudy3 жыл бұрын
6.6 litre on the scoop was the buick/olds engine. 6.6 t/a was the Pontiac 400
@shawnmcroy13 жыл бұрын
The Oldsmobile motors were not an option in 1977. So if it’s the original Z motor (Pontiac 400). They moved to the olds motors in 1979. However in 1979 they had 1,107 left over Pontiac 400s left over that went into 1,107 1979 Trans Am’s. Before then was Pontiac motors, and the latter were Oldsmobile motors.
@scottpeterson48733 жыл бұрын
@@caspar0777 Exactly, if it was ca emissions car it would be oldsmobile 403 v8 but no oil tube in the center of the intake makes it a pontiac 400 most likely the base 180 hp not the hotter 200hp w72 option. that would read: t/a 6.6. Still there are many ways to wake it up. Nice find, mostly there and original and solid. nice original car.

The one guy is complaining about so many items. That car is probably only a 45K mile car.That's not the stock spare. A stock spare was a deflated thin doughnut tire. Used to save space and weight. They should be happy just finding one that clean. The minimal things that are "not desired" give it character. These modern day "replace everything with fake aftermarket " because it's not perfect just ruin the cars. All of you "High rollers" out there have taken the muscle car out of the young guys dream to now be unobtainable. So you can park it along with the other 200 cars you own. Just to be able to brag "look what I have". Well you suck. Period. Thanks for ruining the one great thing about having fun. Also you take a vin off a car and buy all aftermarket sheet metal, to build a fresh car. THAT'S NOT A REAL CAR IT'S A KIT CAR. Might as well make it out of fiber glass. Rant over move along. Back to messing with history.
