Cis people can play trans/gay/lgbtq+ characters really well as long as they study the culture and know the background of everything we’ve been through. In fact I think sometimes it’s even better than type casting if the cis actor does the role justice.

they definitely can but as long as they arent taking the role just because they arent trans or are portraying a badly written character. trans actors have a harder time even getting roles so in a place like America its safe to go through the trans actors before cis ones.

There aren't many trans actors in Korea to begin with and harassment is like a genuine and persistent issue there so even if they had found someone who could potentially have portrayed the role she would probably have turned it down because Squid Game is such a high profile production.

What I love about her character is that she shows the vulnerability of what it’s like being before you fully transition, I have friends who haven’t fully transitioned and they explain to me how uncomfortable they are sometimes with certain parts of themselves. Still I love that everyone accepted her for who she is and they also went in the stark reality it is for lots of trans people out there when they come out, but showed that you can be yourself with the right support network

It's just that like there's very few openly gay idols/actors in Korea and all of them struggle finding labels to represent them (e.g. Holland) so can you imagine a trans person trying to become an actor? Basically impossible. That's why Sunghoon was casted and he did a great job and I would say handled the role very respectfully.

The actual reason why park sunghoon was casted in the end was because of cultural difference but also there weren't any trans actors still active in the industry for the role as per the director when he tried to find one.

Finally! Someone who understands why it has to be a cis man right now. People forget that that's how it started in America too. Straight and cis people played gays and trans for a long time before they were accepted enough in society to feel comfortable portraying themselves without and insane amount of backlash.
