In the highest spiritual teachings in the world, there is a belief that bondage is the result of an attachment to the five senses and, on the other hand, liberation is the result of a detachment from the five senses. Why do the ancient sages believe this, and how do we understand what they knew? In this episode of The Sacred Word, I will explain an important verse from the Ashtavakra Gita, a text one is ready to assimilate after enlightenment. The Ashtavakra Gita is for those who want to absorb themselves in the presence of the Ultimate Reality after awakening.

Makes perfect sense, although surely the experience of beautiful music cannot be an unhealthy thing? I believe some music (or sounds….or vibrations!) links us back to source more readily than any other energy manifestation or experience. 🕉️❤️

We can be totally absorbed in the story on the screen in the cinema, or we can start looking around the cinema, realising it is just sound and vision and walk out into the real world. It's just like Platos cave. 👍

My heart feels like you as a close friend. I feel like as a westerner you are trying to pierce through illusions, pay the effort and trying to reach to the core of knowledge & practice and share it. That may not be my right to say this but when i watch your videos i feel like this is a man loyal to thyself and spiritual path.

I love this channel, Jason's work and words of wisdom, so don't get me wrong here. This is a genuine question: Isn't this physical place, these biological vehicles of perception all about the "sensory experience?" Didn't this physical plane arise out of the universal minds (Brahman) desire for physical experience? If so, and I don't see any other reason for a physical plane to exist, then why are we becoming so focused on overcoming the sensory experience?

On a learning curve here but I’d say yes the senses have evolved from consciousness to allow discovery but we weren’t meant to become so attached to them to the point of self harm. We’ve lost sight of this especially the further we live in disconnect from the natural environment. (As a result of technological advancement) You can also suggest that we were meant to lose the connection because this is also an evolution of discovery. For the individual to then awaken is a joyous experience and very helpful in living in such a challenging world.

@@rickcastle3906 Aren't we all my friend! I agree and also see how the tech driven industrialized way of living has caused the disconnect and resulting self harm. I certainly like to enjoy and embrace the entire physical experience but I also see the out of control train it is in our current world. I feel confident it cycles for eternity. Peace.

The idea that the physical plane arose out of a desire for physical experience is speculative. We should doubt and question any ‘story’ that does not have the stamp of truth on it, validated by our own direct experience. From the standpoint of evolution, we can say that from a single cell to the human being, there has been a constant evolutionary process of change to ever higher forms of life, deeper, and finer states of consciousness. From the ultimate position of the Absolute, evolution is just another ‘story.’ The notion that there has to be a reason for manifestation to appear is an assumption we make based on observations concerning the physical world. What applies to the world of form and name is not applicable to the Unknown, Unborn Absolute. The desire for answers that satisfy a limited mind is the reason why so many seekers end up frustrated and confused. What is perfectly logical in the realm of time and space, name and form simply does not work at the level of the timeless, boundless, nameless reality. It is not really about overcoming sensory experience but on being clear about who we appear to be as individuals and what we are in reality. When we are fixated on objective experience, we lose sight of the source that knows every experience but is not an experience. That is how we get out of balance and the reason for cultivating the Tao.

Whosoever dwells in perceiving the genuine and true nature of all suffering, with senses well-tamed, tempered in body, and in moderation of all things. He is that great one, who is as imperishable as a great mountain of stone! Whosoever has renounced unclean desirous impulses, having become well established in the precepts and what is right. There! They go into that deathless realm of supreme truth. ( These are from the authentic Dhammapada of the Buddha ) Be well everyone!

People turn to spiritual teachings to alleviate the existential pain of non stop desire. Seeing the futility of satisfying every one of them will surely lead to acknowledging the value of temperance, but attempting to transcend the senses seems to be punitive and non productive in producing contentment

Would non existence be ultimate freedom? By living detatched, you still are living therefore are attached to this reality. Is there a way to just let go enough to be free from bondage but also have enough bondage to live according to how existance is imposed upon you. Is seeking true freedom an illusion, a bondage in itself?
