That part at 49:00 where you're figuring out the chords and improvising on top of them is so great to hear!

Great video Justin! I know you had some struggles with that speaker, but what I really like about this video is that it shows all your subscribers that come to your channel to learn, just how much work you put in to learn the songs, for them to be able to learn. As well as a great insight for your subscribers / students, of how to ear train and start learning songs on their own. Well done!

One of the KZbin teachers says he has to put in 6-8 hours before he can release a video, and that’s on an easier song.

never done any transcribing myself but i found this video really interesting and i will definitely be giving it a go. I also think the fact your speaker wouldn't work and it took you awhile to find the tuning kept me watching because it was real, if you had just transcribed it all really quick i would have thought "shit i can't do that" and given up watching

I never would have figured out the drop D and Capo requirement for this song. Thanks Justin for taking the time to do this and showing your approach. I remember songs much better when I've transcribed them on my own.

lol that lightbulb moment at 29:41 .. I've seen a lot of people drop both the high and low E to D, but I play it the similar to the way you play it here, I keep the high E. I can't get the chorus to sound right otherwise. Double dropped D would make it easier to play gold dust woman after though, just take the capo off.
@alleym0n6 жыл бұрын
The recent live version is Drop D no capo. But the chord shapes still apply, they just use a different key lately live. Thanks for this Justin as it really got me motivated to learn this song. Waiting for part 2.

This is great to watch. And the encouraging thing is the process, it’s what I try to do, difference being you get things in minutes I take days. But at least I know I am approaching it in a sensible way. Really like these vids even if they are getting pulled.

As some one who by accident knew the 'trick' with double drop D and Capo II it was actually quite funny to see you struggle with different tunings, etc and then realizing how it should be played. Like watching a cat looking at a mirror.

Got to say your ear is really good! Thanks a lot Justin!

Great video Justin. A good demonstration of the " process" for aurally dissecting a song. The first thing to figure out is the tunings being used. lol There's a DVD that Fleetwood put out of a live show. It's called "The Dance" In that show they play the Chain ... in the key of D ... without the capo. There's a gentleman on KZbin ... name is Rick Beato ... retired music producer who somehow has access to the actual recording tracks , which allows him to separate the instruments for play back and he demonstrates how songs are layered together. Very eye-opening. :) Thanks for sharing Justin.

Fascinating seeing you at work, and it makes me all the more impressed over the effort that lies behind your tutorials. I'm a little surprised that you chose not to watch live performance footage to remove a little guesswork. That said, I just watched two versions of The Chain live, one from the sober nineties, where Buckingham didn't use a capo, then another from the super coked-out seventies, where he did.

I play this in drop D, the rest standard, with the capo on the 2nd fret. Nowhere near as well as you're playing it 22 minutes in. Sometimes I use a 5-string capo (for ADGBE, with the low E open) on the 2nd fret and leave it in standard tuning. The open E sounds better. What replay software do you use? What does your notation look like? Asking for a friend who's a long time fan. Okay, me.

You're getting a bit scruffy there, mate. Must be away from home. Thanks so much for making these. It really is incredibly useful to learn this skill and watching you helps. When I was 15, my potential bandmates just handed me a copy of Live at the Fillmore East (Allman Brothers, of course) and told me to learn all the Dicky Betts parts by the next time we got together. Needless to say, didn't happen. Really f$%ed up those vinyl albums (this was pre-cd) trying to back the needle up hundreds of times to get that lick right. The kids today have it so easy...

He uses a program called Transcribe, which is $40 for a 12 month license, however there's plenty of free alternatives now. I use Audacity which allows you to slow down without affecting pitch and you can easily remove vocals as well, which you can't do in Transcribe.
