Me: -sees reasonable-looking and fun sounding tenor music to work on growls. -Brings out saxophone, begins playing along. -Stare in admiration at the drum solo -Get to 2:22 -Slowly sets saxophone on its stand -Picks up trumpet to hit the higher octave -Plan seems to be working; the notes are reasonable on trumpet -Gets to 2:29 -Brings out harmonica -Cries as I realize that my harmonica is in C -Sits at Piano -Looks at music -Realizes my lack of ability -Does math homework instead

0:17 FYI that sound is actually pretty easy to get on a sax. You just have to play the lowest C but without your right index (i.e. leaving the F key open). And as usual, amazing job :)

The "wtf is this" thing played by the bari is called a multiphonic sound (maybe not the right word in english but in french we gave it that name). Basically it's just certain type of dexterity where you have to weirdly put your fingers on the keys. Then you'll get 2 different notes but played so fast that it gives you the impression of a unique one. It's generally used in contemporary music but some jazz or fusion players use it now !

"This Thing" is a multiphonic note. The one that the bari sax played at the beginning in case you are a bari player and want to learn the fingerings for that multiphonic, it's: The very top key above the B key on your left hand mixed with that little key above the c key. And on your right hand it's the F key and the top pinky key (D# key)

The thing that the tenor sax player does is a multiphonic with false fingering making sound weird. An example is if you are to play a low c but take off your right index it creates a multiphonic sounding like a g and an f# at the same time.

I think DexM47 was kinda hinting at this but those things at 0:17 and at 0:25 are some good ol' multiphonics. But it sounds more like a D# fingering without the G key depressed than a low C without F to me at 0:17 (0:25 could be anything, but the blurry shot I saw seems like the same fingering but on Tenor; can't be too sure). He could also potentially be doing a few other things to make the multiphonics, but I think it's just the fingering he's using here. Great video per usual! Edited for formatting

Hey ZH. I'm just using this with a drum student. I know you didn't much enjoy transcribing the drums, it's a bitch I know when you don't play drums. We both found it helpful that you had the rhythm on one line and the student could voice the pattern over the drum kit in his own way. Cheers, Konrad

I'm sure you've figured out by now, but your question mark notes are just multiphonics. There are entire saxophone workbooks that show fingerings and which pitches they play simultaneously. The lower the "root" note, the easier and nastier they sound, generally.

That thing where u said seriously wtf is this is what I think is called harmonics for lack of a better term. On my tenor it's really easy to get it on high G. You basically try to play a subtone over a specific fingering and it makes that weird sound. Another fingering is low D, but with the first finger open and palm D open.
