Eukaryotic genes are not present continuously, the exons (coding region) are inter-spaced with the introns(the non coding region). The problem that would have arisen if it would have been polycistronic is that formation of mature mRNA from premature mRNA(RNA splicing mechanism) would have been more complex and difficult process.
