I have to admit. I tried this method of spraying the tomato plants with aspirin as they grow and I could not believe for how long they stayed healthy and kept yielding fruits. One particular cherry tomato plant I left to grow in early Autumn ended up going all through Winter and still gave fruit by early Spring. Granted I live in the Southern hemisphere and we enjoy moderately warm weather all year long with only a few spurts of cold.

I crush and boil my eggshells, then uee the water on the tomato plants,and mulch with the eggshells. Sometimes crush them to powder and mix at planting or mix it into top 1" of soil. I recently read crushing and burying calcium antacid tablets gives an almost instant supply of calcium into the plant itself. Steamed bone meal added to hole when planted adds available calcium and phosporous to the roots.
@JoeandAngie2 жыл бұрын
Mix 50:50 with white vinegar, the acetic acid causes the release of Ca++ in solution. Like 2 TBS of pulverized eggshell to 2 TBS white vinegar. It will foam as the CaCO3 neutralizes the acid. Then add to about a gallon of water. Some say let it react for 30 mins, some say 24 hrs. At least 2 hrs I'd say. Test pH to see if too a ridic, if so, add more eggshell. Or go get calcium OTC ...Tums, Os-cal (from oyster shells), etc. I crush Calcium/Mag/Zinc tabs myself w mortar and pestle, of course.

I have found that Epsom salt is fantastic as a soil additive for Nightshades, most impressive with peppers. I would like to see some science on the notion that calcium and magnesium "compete" for absorption, because magnesium doesn't help the plants by being absorbed (like calcium or other nutrients), it helps the plants by increasing the plant's ability to absorb nutrients altogether. Magnesium isn't a 'food' nutrient, it is a utilitarian nutrient, which should actually HELP calcium be absorbed. I suppose it could depend on the environment, maybe already a lot of magnesium in the soil and at some point magnesium becomes redundant (just a guess). I have had better luck finding uncoated aspirin at drug stores and usually the cheap generic stuff that comes in the larger tablets. A lot of the big supermarket type stores have a limited selection of 'pain relievers' on their shelves.

I"ve been using on drop of dawn dish soap, a splash of vinegar, a drop of 33% peroxide, a drop of vegetable oil, and a pinch of baking soda. My tomato plants are healthy in pots & are producing tomatoes already. They're cherry tomatoes. The fertilizer is fish water. And these are from clips from plants started from seed Nov / Dec. 2021

Hey Brian I’m inland in So California. I’ve been trying 2 new methods with great success. I water every day lightly with Masterblend 4-18-3, Calcium Nitrate 15.5-0-0, Epson salt, and Sea-90 Micro nutrients. I mix the Cacium Nitrate in hot water in a bucket and then mix it with rest in a 55 gallon drum where I have a sump pump and hose for watering. I started Gladiator Hybrid seedlings Feb 1 and now June 14 I have nearly a hundred big tomatoes ripening and more than that coming soon. All in a 4’x12’ side yard!!! I’m sold on Masterblend ❤️ The other new method I’ve been trying the past couple of years because of the heat in the summer is hydroponics. Same fertilizer regime and I use 5 gallon buckets buried in the ground. I’ve finally grown the most beautiful red bell peppers all because of the hydroponics!

The Epsom salt I buy has calcium mixed with it. It’s in a readily available form for plant uptake and helps tremendously for calcium supplementation or a quick boost of calcium for blossom end rot but I do agree pure Epsom salt won’t help with that. I haven’t had a need to do that in years as I pulverize my own oyster, crab and egg shell that I blend into my compost along with some egg shell that is dissolved in vinegar and neutralized afterwards. That gives you a good readily available shot of calcium and phosphorus for your plants/soil.

I agree about not salting up the soil and balance too much. Tree bark is where aspirin originally and still is sourced from so salicylic is organic in that sense. But it is also known that neighbouring plants can use and send nutrients through messages in the fungi internet, so maybe it happens.

I'm here because of that video. I didn't really do much of what you said. I didn't see it until the season was well under way but I did use fertilizer with calcium because of your recommendation. This year, I'll get a sprayer and use the aspirin. BTW, I fully intend to watch the video again and implement more of what you recommend.

Thanks for this video. I have been using fine crushed baby aspirin, combined with cinnamon in the bottom of hole when the plants are initially planted for disease and root stimulation. It works great.

I'm in the Atlanta area and think I just lost all my tomato plants due to an unexpected cold snap. They were doing so well with the weather we have been having! But I'm definitely going to use the aspirin once I determine if the plants will make it or not. I may even use it with the hopes that maybe it will help them survive. But, if not, I will definitely use the aspirin on any new plants I replace them with. Thanks for the advice!

Same here. I live 50 miles north of Atlanta and lost almost everything to frost.

Save milk or tea jugs and next year cut the bottom from the jugs. Place over the plants like a mini greenhouse if its gonna be really cold. You can take the cap off as it warms up or remove the jugs if temperatures get warm enough. This saves small plants from getting frost bit!

@donnapalmer7864 all the Amish around here (northern Indiana) use milk jugs as mini green houses. 💚

Been watching since about 36k, seldom comment but appreciate your direct info, sense of humor and relaxed style. I remember the aspirin tip from original video but have yet to use it, thanks for the reminder. Most years fortunately, I have little trouble will my tomatoes until the very end of the season and then usually a bit of blight that I couldn't fight off. I'll try the aspirin this year and see if it makes a difference. Your book will be terrific.
