I'm a big believer in the idea that, for most people, significant growth requires stakes. For art, it's imperative that you make it public. When you keep your work private, who cares if it isn't great? No one will know and you can eke by in mediocrity. This was the case for me, at the very least. When strangers are going to see your work, that's a major incentive to make it great. If you make something that isn't very good, you might get nasty comments and feel humiliated. Of course, make enough art for strangers and you'll inevitably experience that anyway. Overcoming that is just another element of growth!

Your videos are so wonderful that I find myself taking notes on every one. These insights into writing are things I would never come across without traditional writing education. I'd bet you're an amazing professor.

Writing with the readers in mind is something all students need to aim at. My teachers always pointed this out but I did not understand how to edit my text with the reader in mind. Eventually, I went from having my papers fail again and again to writing excellent first drafts after a couple of months of watching your insightful videos. I started with the mini-series on flow, which is a great follow-up to this video about reader-based prose. Thank you very much for the great content. Your channel really made a difference in my academic life and I am grateful you take the time to educate us!

Alchemy skull, Question Mark hat, and not trusting Socrates with the fine China-these are my favorite Writing with Andrew jokes in order of preference.

@@WritingwithAndrew Your videos are as insightful as they are inspiring. Not only do you break down these complex concepts in an easy-to-digest manner, but you help the viewer feel able to employ these techniques in their own writing. I noticed the difference in my own writing instantly, and that’s not hyperbole lol. The sense of humor is the cherry on top, the video on dashes had me cracking up

Can you suggest writer based prose which was published? I would like to see an actual example I can learn from
@WritingwithAndrew3 ай бұрын
Writer based prose would likely have a harder time getting published (since it usually offers little value to readers). It's common in student writing, but I realize that's not helpful to people who aren't teachers... I bet you could find some online in blogs or forums where less experienced writers hang out 🤷♂️

Were can we read the full article on writer based prose ? Do you have a link ?
@WritingwithAndrew Жыл бұрын
It can be tricky to find academic articles since they're often behind paywalls that are prohibitive unless you have access through a library (The JSTOR database has it, for example, but accessing it is another question). But I'll put the citation in the description, and you can do some digging
@heymiokka Жыл бұрын
@@WritingwithAndrew I suspected it would be behind a paywall... But nevermind, thanks for your Help, I will scour the net and see what I can find. ☺

@@WritingwithAndrew Thank you for the citation. I managed to find the article (surprising,huh ?) and just finished reading it. 😄 Now that I have read it, I can say you condensed it very well in the video and made it even more approachable.

Nice thoughts inside the skull and the senses spellbound by the imagination of that skull...
@startupmockingjay577113 күн бұрын
as you are speaking very cohesively and with rich information. sorry to say but the skull actually breaks my focus and i have to rewatch the part of the video again. i think its a fun way to a boring video but finding out a different time and place for this additional insertion of text from the skull would be better. your videos are so great thank you for everything. another thing is that because you are speaking and i am a listener collecting my thoughts to write notes about what you said. when skull interrupts me everything i've gather so far in my head vanishes at that moment. maybe because English is not my first language. next time when i rewatch that part my mind has to put additional effort not to read what the skull said but what you said and ultimately focusing more on you.
