This is amazing! The number of times i've tried reading this topic in FA or some other material and ended up with anxiety because i could never completely understand the difference between lytic and lysogenic transduction. Could not have explained it in a better way. Just awesome. Gosh! Thank you so much for doing this wonderful series!

Thank you so much for this video! UWorld likes to ask a lot about whether these bacteria are then able to produce progeny. Hey Kinza, (love your YT channel btw), I think you are referring to vertical gene transfer, where genes are given to progeny of the parent organism? Horizontal gene transfer (such as transformation, conjugation, and transduction) is usually referring to the transfer of genetic material between two cells of the same generation. For sure, hang in there a little bit longer. Life is a lot better after Step 1. 💪 To try and answer your question, progeny virion is probably referring to bacteriophages that originated in a bacteria that was infected. For example, in generalized transduction, a donor phage injects genetic material into the donor bacterium. Then the phage carrying donor genes are replicated in the bacteria and eventually the bacteria lyses and all of the progeny virions are released to infect new recipient bacteria. Most of the progeny are exact duplicates of the original infected phage, however a small fraction can sometimes carry fragments of the host bacterial DNA. In vertical gene transfer, genetic information from one bacteria is transferred from parent to offspring and bacteria typically reproduce via binary fission where one cell divides into two identical daughter cells with the same DNA copy as the parent.
