So if you don't have an overlocking machine and you use a zig stitch, do you do the zigzag stich on and off the fabric? Or just specifically on the fabric? Idk if that makes since.

Yes so you do it catching the edge of the fabric I demonstrate this on my sewing for beginners video!! Hope it helps!
