Tbf if you finish it, the current ending is open enough that SPOILERS You could say they came back for him. Because neither of them died, and clearly gaining control over the infection seems to happen quickly with just a small time in the light. I'd imagine within a few months they'd be able to rebuild a safe little corner of the world for the two of them and their cat. Being the first to really begin the Post-Green apocalypse civilization.
