In this video we explore the three pieces of information that we need to know before hooking up any transformer, or transformer bank. Then we learn how determine either a WYE or DELTA connection for both the primary and secondary using those three pieces of information.

Love the content. I work as a lineman and I’ll say this information is important. It’s easy to get in the habit of just slapping banks together and wiring em up, especially Y Y 120/208 banks. But it’s great to review everything and understand the “hows and why’s”. Especially for new guys or apprentices.. This is a great resource for journeymen too! Especially if you need to brush up on your skills or haven’t built a certain bank in while…

Where I live in the mountains of Mongolia, we have a 240/380v 3 phase 4 wire connection. So that's a Y hookup, correct? We're looking to change transformers because the existing one is experiencing a lot of voltage drop to the point where some devices refuse to work (pumps, microwave etc) and technical breakdowns. It's old and inadequate. So we'll probably need to buy our own transformer. I think a 50kVa 3 phase pole mount should do the trick. We already have the wiring and poles. We just need an engineer to get us the transformer and connect to the nearest high voltage line which is 37m from our own pole. In my limited knowledge, this shouldn't require much extra infrastructure. The transformer should mount to the high voltage power and then a single 4 wire should be able to connect to our existing line.
@hilineacademy8482
@hilineacademy8482 5 ай бұрын
So you probably have low primary voltage. If the primary voltage is low you will have low secondary voltage. Also it could be bad connections on the primary feeding you. 37 miles is a long way and a lot of line where there could be a bad connection. Also another fix could be a transformer bank that has tap settings. If you have low primary voltage you can deenergize the transformer bank and tap the secondary voltage up until you get good voltage.

Hey Cody, Great lesson. I work with 480 all day, great to learn the distribution details, and terms. Keep the Lessons comming. I notice out in the rural areas the pole grounds are every other pole, is this typical?
@hilineacademy8482
@hilineacademy8482 Жыл бұрын
Thanks Dave I appreciate it. It is pretty common to ground every other pole. Some other places have a spec where their pole grounds are spread apart based on a footage. A lot of time it will depend on how good of a ground they have in their area and how much lightning they have where they are.

What about the voltage of 120/ 208 for a customer? Typically in my area when a customer requests 120 / 240 volt 3 phase service it implies it's a Delta high leg service. Meaning one of the phases is 190 volts to neutral or ground

Awesome teacher. Just out of curiosity, have you ever hooked up a 240/480 3ø 4 wire service in the real world and if so, what was the particular building/application if you don't mind me asking I've heard of a 240/480 with 415V high leg and that it's super rare.

so on the transformer at the beginning of the video you have delta to delta ? or wye to delta?
@hilineacademy8482
@hilineacademy8482 8 ай бұрын
So in the beginning, the primary is hooked up phase to neutral or wye. Meaning one primary bushing will have a phase feeding it and one primary bushing will be connected to the primary neutral. If both primary bushings were each being fed by phases, it would be a delta connection.

Hows a single phase considered Delta 🤔 if its grounded
@hilineacademy8482
@hilineacademy8482 Ай бұрын
Good question. The idea of a connection being delta or wye comes from the ties in the bank. With a delta connection your tie to the next transformer is a phase. With a wye connection your tie to the other transformers is a neutral. When we’re only working with one transformer, or single phase you don’t see the delta shape because you only have one phase angle to work with. But if we follow the rule of delta divide to determine our hookup, 120/240 would fall into the delta qualification. So it’s really a perspective thing. If we’re only dealing with one phase angle, or single phase power, you could say it’s not a delta because there’s no delta shape. But if we’re dealing with three phase power and have more than one phase angle and follow the delta divide rule, now we start to build a delta shape. So it’s all how you want to look at it. In order to have a structure or system of teaching people how to build three phase power, it helps a lot if you just teach guys to go by the system. At the end of the day it’s not a hill to die on. Great question👍 stay safe.

12,470/7200. This is back at the power company substation? Residential area we only deal with the 7,200 volts?
@hilineacademy8482
@hilineacademy8482 Жыл бұрын
Hi Ted. Good question. So looking at your other questions, I’m assuming that the Circuit voltage that your working on is a 12470 Grounded Wye. So that means you have a wye circuit that measures 7200 volts to neutral (which is bonded to ground, or earth potential through the pole ground) and 12470 volts phase to phase, and where that comes from is obviously from the substation bank. In the sub the nameplate would say, Primary input: 69kv ( or whatever your subtransmission voltage is) Secondary output: 7200 volts. So only talking about the secondary coils now, what they are doing is taking the three 7200 volt transformer coils and connecting them in a wye configuration and creating the 12470 volt distance between the points of the wye shape. Then they bond the common neutral to the substation ground grid. Then they bring all three phase and the grounded neutral out of the sub. Then based on the utilities spec, the ground the neutral every so often through a pole ground. In the residential areas they now can hook up transformers 7200 volts by hooking up one phase to the insulated bushing ( which is one end of the coil) and the grounded neutral to the pot lug ( which is the other end of the transformer coil). Please let me know if this helped at all. Also to gain a better understanding of how the connections work and what’s involved with it all check out a video I did on vectoring. It explains all of this in detail. Stay safe. 👍

@@hilineacademy8482 Understand it all, but no observable neutral in residential area where ONLY ONE PHASE (of the three) serves the area. Only one bushing on the transformer. Yes, multipoint grounding at all of the Poles. As stated in another video, this is a “Single bushing grounded wye transformer. Can not observe a parallel neutral back to the substation. thank you

How do you know how many transformers are needed?
@hilineacademy8482
@hilineacademy8482 Жыл бұрын
You would look at the customer needs. If the customer needs for example are 120/240 3 phase 4 wire. That would be a delta hookup, and with a secondary delta connection you can supply three phase power with only two transformers. You dont have to have three. The choice between building a three pot or a two pot delta hookup would depend on the amperage and type of load that the customer has and that usually isn’t our decision to make. The customer and the designer would write the job up to meet the customers needs before we go out to the job. If you need more help understanding the “why” you should watch the vectoring lesson I did. It will bring it all together. Stay safe 👍

What if the Circuit Voltage is 12740V Delta and the Nameplate is 7200/12740V! Can you wire that as a Star?
@hilineacademy8482
@hilineacademy8482 7 ай бұрын
We’ll if the circuit voltage is 12470 Delta, you would not have a circuit neutral available to hook up to. So you would not be able to hook up a 7200/12470Y transformer on that circuit. This transformer requires 7200 volts and on a 12470 Delta circuit you only have one potential available which is 12470 volts phase to phase. Go back and watch the lesson on “How to vector transformer banks. “ it will explain it all in detail and you can follow along and do them with me. If you have any questions please reach out. Ide love to help. Stay safe 👍

I’m an electrical student and I appreciate your theory but I think you are missing something about the secondary site information. For those type of transformers you are showing in your video, you forgot to say how they hook up to one another. Each one has X1 and X3, X2 and X4, people don’t know how to hook up these 3 together. It need a broken down explanation on the secondary side. There is a difference between what you showed and a dry types transformer, they are not hooked up the same. They need specific explanation. Even some master electricians don’t know how to put it together.
