i appreciate the poetic justice and irony that accounts for tarn being defeated by soundwave here. Tarn is the "perfect decepticon." He represents the decepticon ideals that we all know and love: peace through tyranny, might makes right, stuff like that. This goes down to even his original counterpart, who was so devoted to the decepticon cause that he wears a mask of the decepticon logo (in this series thats just his face). Meanwhile, soundwave embodies the ideals the decepticons originally strove for: equality among all. in fact, outside of any transformers canon, soundwave's face inspired the decepticon logo. So the final battle was the personification of all the villainy of the decepticons who made his face the logo vs the personification of how the decepticons started who had his face made into the logo.

Super fitting for soundwave to be the one to defeat tarn, tarns face is literally the decepticon insignia while soundwave's original toy was the inspiration for the insignia. Soundwave is basically saying that tarn is a cheap imitation of him and that's just great.

My absolute favorite thing about this scene is that Soundwave didn't have to steal the Cortex Helm from Tarn. He very easily could have just done the massive sonic explosion right after ejecting Laserbeak and killed Tarn then and there, but he didn't. Soundwave goes out of his way to do what Tarn never would: give the Supersoldiers free will. The soldiers all dropping their weapons as they realize they're free is one of my favorite moments in the entire series.

Soundwave accomplished what most decepticon leadership couldn’t, actual decepticon victory not by conquest but by collaboration, and a happy ending for everyone, even the Tarns, at the cost of his own life, he got to be more then just Megatron’s right hand man partially thanks to him warming up to Roddy and teaming up with him to beat the quints, he lived up to being the face of the decepticons. He and Hot Rod were the real MVPs of Cyberverse.

Unlike Megatron however, who got corrupted by his ambitions before he could bring equal rights to all people, Soundwave granted those who were unwilling slaves something what they needed the most - a chance.

Soundwave was always the perfect decepticon, the symbol was modeled after his head afterall (not in universe but in real life), him going out by stopping Tarn who wore the symbol as a mask is pretty neat

I will admit I did cry for a sound wave as he was my favorite Deceptacon. But the surprising twist is that he died as a hero rather than live as a villain. (edit) I honestly realized something: Soundwave actually cared more for Cybertron than most Decepticons do....otherwise he wouldn't have made one last command to them before his sacrifice.

In the Aligned continuity (Transformers Prime, Rid, etc), Soundwave was one of the founding members of the high council of Cybertron, he was also in the rebellion when the Quintesson attack Cybertron. He left the Council after the Rust plague because he was the only one trying to "revived" Cybertron. When he left, he said to the other "you think that you're better then then, but I do not", speaking of the Minors in South cities. The Minor were basically slaves and if a North civilian wanted an organ or something, they get it from minors, even if he is still alive. So don't tell me that this Soundwave was totally evil, it's a shame that Knockout got a redemption arc and not him... Just.. Why Knockout?
