Bruce, AC1BM, has a vehicle with two 12 volt batteries and is wondering if he wire in a transformer and safely produce 24 volts. Dave has just the right wiring ideas as well as a converter built for the job!

Many Jeep owners can buy two battery installation systems. They fit right in the area where the factory battery sits. Typically, though, one battery is for starting the engine and the other is a slow drain battery for 12 vdc equipment installed in the vehicle such as a portable refrigerator, exterior lights for nighttime camping and charging cameras and cell phones. There is an electronic device to properly charge each battery through the alternator. If your starting battery dies, you can move a switch to engage both batteries until you start your engine, the disconnect it once it is running.

That is the system that I have in my JEEP.

The most important thing is not to use the vehicle battery. If your radio battery is flat, that's the end of QSOs for today, but if your car battery is flat, your problems haven't started yet for tonight. Get a separate radio battery in your car.

Yes, and a "keyed" power relay to energized aux battery during operation, but battery isolation/disconnect at the halt. Then, the vehicle charging system maintains voltage during operation without leaving you stranded ..

WHY does he want 24 volts? Semi tractors used to use 24 volts for starting while running everything else off of 12 volts and the charging system was 12 volts. These vehicles used a series/parallel switch to accomplish 24 volts at starting. It basically changed how the batteries were connected while cranking to get the two different voltages.

I personally have some gear such as tool batteries in the 20 volt range, and have found that it is simple to charge them off 24 volts. So have a 48 volt solar system with a charge controller that can handle 60 volts but givee 23 to 24 volts or 27 volts to charge the 24 volt batteries.

Delco remy 30SI alternator has built in transformer. For when machinery has cab that works on 12 VDC, But Starting system that is 24 VDC battery set up. Also, CUCV military vehicle dual 12 vdc alternators are in series and isolated in a manner that the DC generated will feed 24 VDC battery system without a transformer. Many ways to make juice for sure

ALTERNATOR is the key>>produces AC that is then RECTIFIED to DC

the converters are too low power though... we need 12v to 24v at hundreds of watts

I can help you here, however we need three numbers to work with before we can start: 1.) How many AMP hours can the 12-volt batteries deliver continuously? 2.) How many watts to you need? Hundreds could be 600, 1200, or 5300 and etc. 3.) How long do you want the system to run at 24-volts times how many watts from #2 above do you need? Let's take an example: Say you need 1200 watts for six hours. That's 1200 watts times six hours or 7200-watt hours. To get 7200-watt hours our of a 12-volt battery you'd need a battery that can deliver 7200 divided by 12-volts equals 600 AMP hours of capacity times two because you can only safely discharge a lead acid battery to 50% of its capacity. You need to add to this a factor for the inefficiency of the DC-to-DC converts. Keep in mind no matter the voltage watts don't change. All that changes is the current required to produce the number of watts you want. Use the formula of power in watts equals voltage times amps. Hopefully that makes some sense and I'd be happy to answer more questions. There are DC-to-DC converts that can produce kilowatts if the input voltage is high enough.

@@rogerp5816 no. as i said we need from 12 volts to 24 volts. it is easy to sort out batteries to do this and give the wattage required which in my case is 1000. The problem becomes charging the batteries. a split charger works. BUT>>>>> as with the subject of the video.. many of us need a simple converter from 12.. to 24... that can run a kilowat. it does not need to be continuous or for long at all.. just odd key ups.
