The problem with Transformers One is the release day as a lot of kids went back to school and kids are still getting adjusted to school starting back and joining all the clubs. I also have not seen a kids movie come out in a while. I have not seen many trailers for Transformers online.

I think the fact that school started back is one reason why Transformers did not do well in box office. I think if it had come out in July or August the film would have done better. September is usually a month for Halloween and horror films not Kids films.

John nailed it on the head with the new generation not liking it. I’m in my mid to late 20s. A ton of people from my generation love transformers. But we grew up on the bay trilogy. And again, we are old now. There is no hit after the bay trilogy for a younger audience.

We went to see it and as a G1 fan myself, I loved it. My GF actually enjoyed it and what's important to me is that my son loved it as well. And now he lives transformers. And that's all that matters to me. Plus it's only been out for couple days. Not the end of the world

They go by North American release for these comparisons since international release varies wildly. The projection was 30+ million in that market, to which it had a full wide release (nearly 4000 theaters), and it came up short. Pretty much a matter of marketing. Looked too mixed tone and kiddified in the 1st trailer, so that didn't excite adults, and adults have the disappointment of Bay's franchise still scarring them. It wasn't marketed well to kids either, so all around, getting a big opening was going to be hard. The great reviews seldom reach general audience, so unless they ramped up advertising after that wave of positive buzz, the already turned off audience was never going to know to flock out to see it (in North America). That said, it's big hope is that it does well internationally, and that it has strong legs now that words of mouth can start to spread.

As other people have also stated, one reason Transformers One didn't do well is probably because kids are back in school. Another reason is the first trailer made it looked like more of a kid's movie and I think that alienated a lot of the older audience. It wasn't until the positive word of mouth that I actually started getting interested in seeing it. Hopefully it at least does better on streaming

To be fair though, this was an animated film and those have traditionally done worse than live action entries of a major franchise. Spider-Verse 1 didn't even clear 400 million, and after the movie blew up on streaming, the sequel made 690 million. This is compared to the 1.9 billion No Way Home got 18 months earlier. TMNT Mutant Mayhem was well received last year and only made 180 million on a 70 million dollar budget. It doesn't help that there has been a lack of advertising, or advertising that focused heavily on the humor and not the hard hitting emotional moments, making a lot of adults think it was purely for children. Disney, Pixar, and Illumination are more the exception to animation having a smaller audience not the norm.

I’m surprised the release date wasn’t mentioned since thats no doubt the biggest factor for a film marketed as a family/kids movie. Disney and Illumination released their big family movies in the summer when kids are off, but this releases when school and extra curricular activities have just begun again. The people that would still go are fans or people without kids but that first trailer made it seem like it wasn’t for them, as you mentioned.

I’d place blame on the marketing. I audibly laughed throughout my first viewing of the trailer for all the wrong reasons. Similarly to the first Sonic trailer, i thought it looked like the lowest form of children aimed entertainment riding off the back of a recognizable IP (plus the CGI looked so flat) and I immediately wrote it off. I’m happy to hear folks saying it’s a great movie but I’m not going to spend $20 on a movie that gave such a bad first impression

@@AutisticAnimator10 I never said animation is for children, I did however think the humor that was included in the trailer was absolutely aimed directly at children I’m 26, TMNT Mutant Mayhem and Spiderverse pt2 are two of my favorite movies from 2023 and Puss in Boots the Last Wish was also a top 10 movie for me in 2022. The difference between those movies and Transformers 1 is that those films had compelling, visually interesting trailers that actually reflected the nature of the final product and made me interested before their review embargos were lifted. From what I’ve heard TF 1 is essentially banking on you dropping $20 to go in blind

Honestly I'm hoping Transformers One gets legs cause it was SO good! But that first trailer did irreparable harm to it. It made me be like yeah I guess I'll see it cause I have A List. And it wasn't until Harloff's GLOWING review that I was like oh damn maybe this is good followed by yours a few days later. But just last night I was talking to a friend who said after the first trailer he wasn't interested in it and not till my glowing review I posted did he consider seeing it again.

I think the first trailer and Michael Bay's contamination of Transformers is the main factors. Transformers One not doing well at the box is disappointing because I loved this movie. I saw the movie last Wednesday for a fan event and it was a good amount of people which made me think it could do well. Then I saw it a 2nd time on Saturday and there was probably 10 people watching it. Then I looked at the seats at my theater and saw there were also relatively empty for most of the showings throughout the day. I can only hope it does well on Streaming and Bluray. This stung my soul, because this is the first time I enjoyed something Transformers with Peter Cullen not voicing Optimus Prime.

transformers ones issue was 100% marketing. you can't compare Pixar, minions and kungfu panda to transformers...all 3 of those have established themselves as a studio or franchises as family friendly films. transformers for decades has been in the pg13 live action game...switching it up and doing animation turned off the fans of live action and didn't do enough to build itself up as a family friendly film. so it catered to just die hard transformers fans mostly. mutant mayhem is another example of this. fantastic film, but it didn't market itself as a family friendly film. Ray was right again

Not a bad last few days for trailers that improve things lol. The red one trailer made me react the same, it ended and it went from non stop cringe to some subtle charm with this trailer, a gladiator trailer made the right way, and thunderbolts giving that *everyone is welcome* vibe to the viewers, looks like it could draw more people in, didnt feel like you needed to know them. I really liked the music choice for thunderbolts, felt like it was showing us a group of people who were down in the dumps lol

I think that there's a disconnect with what fans love, and what the general public are interested in. In the real world, away from fandom, no-one cares about your stuff. I don't know a single person, including me, who cares anything about Transformers. You know that Anime you love? Nobody cares, outside of your bubble. I love Farscape, and I don't know a single person, outside of me, who has ever even heard of it.

I was the target demographic when the toy line launched in the 80's. I was also the target demographic when the nostalgia bait Michael Bay movies hit, while I was in my late 20's. I am now 46 and beyond caring about toys I played with 40 years ago. Seven movies have came and went since 2007 and to be honest, I couldn't recount what happened in any of them beyond yelling, smashing, and pervy shots of the flavor of month. I'm sure there may be some out there who feel differently, but I'm pretty damn sure I'm by no means alone in being apathetic toward stupid robot cars starring in a masterpiece of cinema.

The passion of Star Wars and the fans. Just blows me away the passionate complaining sometimes over nothing. Most can't just let it go. They masses who fight for it. I'm always shocked as someone who saw Return of the jedi my first star wars theater experience my passion for starters has been on rapid decline since Phantom. Perked up on The Dorce Awakens, Rouge One and , The last jedi. Hey I liked it. I enjoyed the bitterness and emptiness of being let down over and over that caused Luke to isolate. Hell I've felt that way with life. Funny now with Star Wars. Back to the constant let down over and over. Still surprised fans still fight and defend the ip at this point. They haven't been good to you. Loving Star Wars is like a huge Metal fan being still a Metalica fan. Let me tell you from the moment the Black album came out just soul crushing forward. Same feeling.
