Transformers Review: Studio Series 86 Ironhide

Here's how I view it: Objectively, SS86 is better in almost every way than the ER mold. I will not argue that at all. And the parts count makes it worthy as a Voyager, and it IS screen accurate for both the movie and the OG cartoon. Hell, it's still better than the cartoon model, because his legs aren't skinny. Well, his forelegs aren't, anyway. But, as someone who got the Ironhide, Guard, and SG Ratchet molds, the Nonnef feet for all three, AND proudly extensively repainted SG Ratchet into a ER-esque color (promo photo gray thighs, light blue windows), and who doesn't care about strict cartoon accuracy, I must admit that SS86 is hardly worth upgrading to. I'm...still not a fan of the look and proportions, especially the torso, the head is kinda uggo, etc. And while the partsforming itself is an annoying itch, I don't hate the shield it becomes. But I was lucky to get those three figures. Many weren't, so this is great for them.

Mine copy is due to arrive tomorrow. I will be replacing my ER version with this one though I’m not sure if I will get rid of the ER version.

The vehicle mode was a little disappointing, but I do like the robot mode. Despite its flaws, it has some interesting engineering and overall good appealance. I might buy it when I see it in stores.

Voyager, huh? I was down for Override as a Voyager, but now I am questioning that for both toys. Seems like I fell for a bit of a slippery slope argument from Hasbro - and I note they are pulling the same stunt with two very popular, much requested figures, not just some randos. Or maybe I am just being paranoid. Still, they might have at least worked harder at color matching for the price point.

I think this guy justifies the price a little better than Override. I can't accept her as anything more than a nice Deluxe.

I wish Studio Series wasn't so against including at least some 5 mm ports on their figures. Screen accuracy is nice but compatibility with accessories and Weaponizers would also be nice.

Agreed. I'd like Studio Series to blend more seamlessly with WFC/Legacy.

@@TFCollector I'd argue they're aesthetically already indistinguishable. The lack of 5 mm ports on the SS86 figures is a case of difference without distinction.

Hopefully the issues with Ironhide will be fixed when this mold is reused for Ratchet.

Nice transformation, like it a lot, but I still prefer the Siege toy. Being accurate to the ‘The Transformers’ animation designs means taking the blandest and least interesting robot designs in the history of the series - in my opinion, anyway.

I actually agree. I never understood why people held up the cartoon as the standard for how Transformers should look. Those designs were made to be as simple and easy to draw as possible.

@@TFCollector Exactly - I’m not saying never use the basic designs, or to change them just for the sake of changing them, but stylising them and putting new spins on them makes all the difference, particularly in plastic. Some recent Masterpiece figures are so ‘cartoon accurate’ they just look bland - at least to me.

One of the reasons I stopped collecting most Masterpiece is because they went full cartoon. I preferred when they used what worked best between the cartoon, the old toy, and real-life details.

Actually the show did have the battle sled in 1 episode for Ratchet I don't think this figure is worth the voyager price I actually would rather the sled

The external hinges don't bother me nearly as much as the feet bothered me on the last two versions. I do miss the stripe though.

I just don't like the bad color matching and the visible hinges on the vehicle mode. Hoping Toyhax can fix the color matching somewhat. The forearms in robot mode need fillers badly.

iirc it's slightly inaccurate b/c ironhide only used one pistol in that scene and ratchet had used the two.

Great review TF Collector!!! I think SS86 Ironhide would be perfect, if he was either sold as a deluxe sized figure, or if he was just as tall as SS86 Wreck-Gar. lol :D I do hope we get Ratchet in this mold, the blue pegs on Ironhide's roof seem to hint that we will get Ratchet too. :D Keep on being amazing.
