As an 80s era guy, I am so happy with the quality of toys Hasbro has been making especially with the siege, earthrise, and 86 studio series. It's like all my childhood favorite characters jumped off the screen and into my hands without costing me a fortune. These mini masterpieces are just pure gold to G1 fans.

The pearly white arms and tail are again back to the toon as that’s what they were, whiteish. They did not animate with a proper silver, but created illusions of metals and chromes with classic cell shading.

It's interesting how on the G1 show you never got to see Grimlock with his sward, or any other Dinobots with swards and they only used their guns to fight the Decepticons with. But in the comics and other cartoon shows he and his Dinobot team had swards as well as their fire breath and guns.

The reason why there is no front teeth on Dino mode is so the big fire affects could fit in his mouth

The clear piece on his chest is held on by screws, so you could remove it if you wanted to, and I think it makes his robot mode look more accurate to the cartoon.

Would not surprise me if a 3rd party did legs for Wheelie would also do a replacement clearer chest piece, especially if as you say is easily detachable via a couple of screws. Very nice to know this mod-able info in advance, cheers!

Great review Paul. You reviewed it properly faults and all and it's appreciated by fans like me who has been a fan since 1984 of the franchise. Thus guy arrived recently and he's great. Wheelie is a display piece that's his job here so fans can create the scene in the movie where grimlock charges in on the quintessons. Great job

As far as the sword goes, yes Hasbro could have included it, but the whole point of the Studio Series line is that the figures and their accessories are meant to be as screen accurate as possible, and Grimlock never uses his sword in the movie, or in the animated series that I can remember. A 3p company will probably make an upgrade kit for him that includes the sword for those who want it

Great Grimlock figure. I like the POTP figure in robot mode but the Dino mode looks inbalance, especially the small claws. Too bad Wheelie stays in gangnam style permanently.

I just got him yesterday and my only cons are the wasted wheelie and the black chest piece. Some have removed the screws and it does look better. I do believe this mold will have a re color to toy color and fix the chest piece. Will see..

Beautiful figure. I agree on all points you bring up, though I do wish we would see more silver and gold chrome on all these toys. Hasbro is definitely killing it with these toys the past few years. They could just keep reissuing these figures and I bet they would sell because they're all pretty hard to find.

The size of POTP Grimlock was always one of my main issues with that figure, and the rest of the Dinobots as well especially the Deluxe scaled ones. They didn't give the Dinobots the proper scale they deserved and just looking at the comparisons with this guy they seem to have fixed that issue about as well as I could have hoped for.

Wow! This Grimlock is pretty close to the Masterpiece in size, they did a great job for this one, but Wheelie just doesn't cut it, he needs knee articulation, WTH? And they really should make all of the Dinobots while they're at it, personally, I didn't mind that the POTP Dinobots could combine together, I thought that was way overdue to happen anyway. But we should get the other Dinobots and create the team again, awesome review, Paul!

IMO hard to justify giving him a sword instead of Wheelie when in the movie, he was kinda partnered up with Wheelie and he didn't use his sword. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if we saw a "King Grimlock" version from the comics that'll give him a couple additional accessories like his crown and the flaming sword

Considering it wasn't "accurate" for DOTM Leadfoot to come with a Steeljaw, I don't think that excuse works here for Grimlock. Unless Hasbro releases the sword alongside another figure, ala the Centurion Drone, he's gonna be swordless sadly.

If we're bringing in concepts, then one could argue that maybe the sword could've been included, not just because he had it in the cartoon, but to also double as a Generations styled Grimlock/proper update for those who wanted a "complete" Grimlock. Best believe, I would have preferred they ditch the Wheelie (even though it's a kinda cool display companion) in favor of the sword, even if he didn't actually use it in the movie. Wheelie could've had better articulation or be fully transformable in a future release instead.

DNA design needs to fix this figure with: 1: more clear replacement transparent piece for the chest. 2: new head with front row teeth (and maybe eye colour changing gimmick, why not?) 3: a new wheelie minifigure (or just new replacement limbs for the original minifigure, either way.) 4 (maybe): a new sword. And 5: gap fillers for the forearms. DNA design, if you see this video, chances are, you’ve seen this comment. And is so, please give us this upgrade kit this figure deserves!

I agree with you about the chest plate: too dark. As for Wheelie... lets just say I prefer they invested more efforts into Grimlock than in to Wheelie. Quite frankly, I wished the used the plastic they took for Wheelie and used it for Grim's sword He is great to own, a real beast!

I stopped buying off-the-shelf Hasbro Transformers (or "CHUG") once Alternators (Binaltech) and Masterpiece hit the scene. Then about 5 years ago I started collecting 3rd Party. But I've picked up a few of these Studio86 figures, and like them a lot. 3P looks amazing, but the transformations can often be an ordeal. It's nice to go back to TF toys that you can transform without even reading the instructions. And these Movie characters will keep me happy untill Fanstoys release Scourge, Wreck Gar, Wheelie etc.

I normally don't customize "regular" transformers but I couldn't resist adding articulation. Its great to be able to pose the legs but ultimately I wish I would've left it alone for future appreciation in value. Its ultimately not worth it because you'll end up using him as he came anyway. Also just have to add that overall its among my favorite dinobot purchases I've ever made because of the accuracy to price ratio and they didn't make him too small. I just hate the smoked out chest plate. It makes no sense to me. Its not accurate, doesnt do anything to improve the look and was just an added cost for them. Its like they don't want these figures to be too accurate like its somehow going to cut into the mp line or if they do too good of a job they won't be able to sell you another slightly different g1 styled grimlock next year when they pop out another line.

I just picked this up a few days ago at My Target.I didn't get the blast points..I guess they forgot to put thm in my box.I do love the scaleof this like Becaue Grimlock is supposed to had been much bigger then Prime.If you see the end of the War of the Dinobots episode you will that Grimlock is huge.OBTW I would love to see the Dinobots too.I'm not sure if you got Beast Wars Megatron yet but I would love to had seen both of these two characters side by side

The complaint is a valid one. If you're gonna do something, don't do a half assed job of it. Either that or leave it out entirely. The leader class price point means it costs more. If you aren't gonna do Wheelie properly, don't include him and lower the price

Found this guy at Walmart the other day, and generally have all rhe same complaints. The smoked chest piece is just plain stupid. The lack of flaps to cover the forearms is lazy, and Im indifferent about the Wheelie, but probably would have preferred a sword. The teeth thing doesn't really bother me all that much. I'm honestly not sure how a designer can look at the finished product and not immediately recognize that these would be the most common complaints. For the most part, though, Im really happy with where Hasbro has been going, and hope we get all five Dinobots, with NO EXCLUSIVES!

I forget the maker/seller, but have seen on EBay (likely available on Etsy, Amazon, etc), custom teeth for ‘86 Grimlock for $5.00 or so. Fear not! Fans have come to rescue Hasbro’s mistakes for them. Again. And again. And again. Also, I feel like for an ‘86 movie Studio figure, Grimmy has far too many “mech” parts molded into his legs and a couple other spots. He *never* had that pointlessly exposed gear work, pipes and wires, and *should* have flat panels where that gunk shows up. No offense to the designer- they were possibly intended or reused from another Grimlock mold, but my point remains- they don’t belong on any “movie accurate” Dinobot. It’d have cost less to make them more accurate flat panels than over-tech’d ones he has here.

Well while 86 is suppose to be movie accurate, it’s no secret that a lot of these figures were originally intended for regular mainline releases, and putting them in studio series was their way of getting all these characters out faster. So it makes sense they would design them all to have a similar aesthetic, especially since these are suppose to fit within your regular generations/WFC collection. Tho I will say, the marketing may have been misleading as studio series would suggest super screen accuracy.
