It's ironic, but I think Orson Welles' rather dispassionate delivery of his lines actually added to the gravitas of Unicron by making him sound more aloof and detached from the characters he was speaking to. This gave him an innate confidence which made him seem that much more menacing. Everyone was beneath him and insignificant, he didn't even have to try to intimidate them, and made the few moments when his voice did raise a bit all the more frightening. It also plays in with his musical theme being so subtle and quiet, it just overshadows everything with a sense of impending doom, it doesn't have to be loud.

The shot at 1:20 is one of the coolest and most terrifying moments ever created in a sci fi movie. It PERFECTLY sells the idea that Unicron is such an advanced being that he essentially blurs the line between technology and what we understand as magic. The shifting graphical planes have an Akira-esque feel to them like he's in tune with the fabric of reality itself and makes his ability to transform Megatron seem feasible.
@Ultra04channel Жыл бұрын
Honestly, we need more of *this* type of Unicron. Not some generic villain, or anything like that. An incomprehensibly advanced machine god, floating through space, consuming worlds simply to sustain himself. Not out of malice, or just to be evil, but simply out of a need for more energy, feeling no remorse for it, as to him, the inhabitants are like insects to us. There's also the blending of organic and technological, even in this movie. Look at how organic a lot of the structures inside him look. They're curved, asymmetrical, almost haphazard, but all seemingly functional in some way. And during the intro, his "core" or whatever that glowing ball that lights up when he's generating power from the consumed planet, seems to be almost entirely organic. There's just something about this depiction of the character that's so much better than any other. Prime comes close, making him the core of Earth, but then when you think about how small Earth is, you realize that he'd really only be a threat to moons, and planets like Mercury, Mars, and dwarf planets like Pluto. IDW was great too, but just wasn't quite as good as this one. They sort of made him weird and advanced, but he was more magical than anything in that. A dead planet, revived by pure hatred, and powered by a black hole. I think having an origin makes the character a lot less intimidating. It would be best if he were just this unknowable, horrifying inevitability that the occasional planet sends a distress signal about, before disappearing. Most advanced, space-faring societies have at least heard of him, but none have observed him and lived to see the next day. That's what we need more of.

This could not be a better example of Orson Welles dedication as an artist. When you really listen to his performance is Unicron you can genuinely hear him putting emotion Into the words, you can also hear what the producers of the film were talking about when they said that his weight has become such a problem that he was wheezing so much while saying his lines; so here is Welles, working on a franchise that according to everyone whom it came up with he was not a fan of, his own body causing a hindrance to his performance due to weighing over 400 pounds, which had him practically at death's door (quite a more literal statement than you would think, given that he died less than a week after recording his lines) and you can still hear him. Everyone talks about how awesome Unicrons voice is (and rightfully so), but the music director isn't given enough credit. It's such a simple but cool beat throughout the scene, and they knew to kick it up a notch at 3:10 when Galvatron and his new soldiers were revealed setting the tone for how much danger the autobots were in.

You know what I like most about Unicron, specifically this version. With any other villain, Megatron could have expected some level of respect and/or fear towards him. But Unicron, through out their entire conversation, Unicron is completely unimpressed by Megatron. All his power, his conquests, achievements, history, they all mean nothing to Unicron. Even worse, I think Unicron actually got a kick of bursting Megatron ego: "Then it pleases me to be the first", "You exaggerate", "the point is you're a fool". This is before Unicron threatened him with death. He did nothing to Megs, but took the great conqueror and effectively reduced him to bragging child. Now that is a villain.

Orson was one of those old school actors who may hate the scripts and movies their given they put their full effort into it like actors and actresses of the 30s, 40s, and 50s who later in careers tend to star in low budget sci-fi and horror flicks. Pure professionals. Unlike a majority of today's where if their not interested it shows on-screen despite them getting paid a tone of money.
@hey12358y10 жыл бұрын
You can't convince me Welles was in total cash grab mode in this movie. It may have offended his classicaly trained sensibilities, but I think he eventually took on the challenge of giving Unicron a strong personality. And he succeeded magnificently. The imperious sarcasm. The stately rhythm of his lines. How he curtly slaps down Megatron. When he says ,"Excellent!" to Megatron agreeing to serve him, you can imagine the self-satisfied grin on the face of Unicron. Such a terrific scene, that is still quoted and well-know today, and that is due to Welles taking the role of "Toy Planet" and nailing it.

Daniel Ryan I just think that Welles simply wasn't able to phone it in. Like, if he could he would have. He probably just did it as he read without thinking about performance or character. The director then put the recording through the synth and we got this. One of life's little miracle was that Orson Welles was never boring.

There are a lot of great lines in this scene. People don't give enough credit to Unicron's casual, "Excellent," at 2:00, as if he hadn't just tortured Megatron into submission. He so obviously expected Megatron's surrender. Even the torture feels like it was just humouring the smaller robot.

This is a legitimately brilliant scene. That cool score beating underneath it, almost like a heartbeat, and the majesty of Unicron's design...the way a single word from him is powerful enough to send Megatron tumbling through space... ...And of course Orson Welles's unique and absolutely majestic voice acting. A man whose delivery imbues a kids' toy franchise with gravitas and depth, making the daft dialogue seem mighty and profound. A lot of times nostalgia plays tricks on you; you go back to find that the things you loved as a child were just garbage. This scene, however, is not one of those times.

Each of these individuals has made remarkable impacts in their respective fields: 1. **Frank Welker**: Known for his extensive voice work, Welker has voiced countless characters in animation and film, including iconic roles like Scooby-Doo and various Transformers characters. 2. **Leonard Nimoy**: Best known for his role as Spock in "Star Trek," Nimoy's portrayal has had a lasting influence on science fiction and pop culture. 3. **Orson Welles**: A legendary filmmaker and actor, Welles is celebrated for his groundbreaking work in cinema, including "Citizen Kane," which is often cited as one of the greatest films of all time. These three figures have made culturally significant contributions that would indeed be worthy of preservation in a film archive.

I won't blow smoke up anyone's ass saying I remember people clapping or cheering or whatever. I don't remember much with a whole lot of clarity. One thing I remember clearly is the film breaking right after the Decepticons ambush the shuttle and kill Ironhide and the rest. Talk about getting blue balled. That sucked. But my folks took me back a few days or a week later or something. The other thing I remember is the opening. We knew all the Decepticons and villains. But I clearly remember how straight up apocalyptic that opening scene felt. We were like "who or what is THAT?" We all thought the movie was just going to be Optimus Prime vs Megatron for 90 minutes. Unicron was a game changer. You have all these Transformers of various sizes in the TV show but then this is a Transformer that's a damn PLANET?! A simple yet powerful concept. While we don’t necessarily think about it due to him immediately being upgraded, this scene IS the death of Megatron. He got what he wanted by killing Optimus Prime, but he never got to see his plans for domination completed and died knowing another, far greater evil had taken control of him and forced him to submit, only to kill him anyways and transform him (pun intended) into a powerful minion on a leash. This is the scene where G1 Megatron died as he and Galvatron are clearly two different characters. A sad but deserved ending for such an awesome antagonist.

Orson Welles voicing Unicron is either brilliant casting, having him voice the Transformers equivalent of Satan... Or depressingly ironic that one of the last roles of the father of modern cinema is basically a feature-length toy commercial.

This scene is still so bad ass. The screenwriters, animators and voiceovers crushed it. I never put together he was saying “your bargaining posture is highly dubious” until decades later. Too sophisticated for my young brain.

Holy Shit, watch this in 5.1 high def with the base turned up. Megatron's voice comes out of the front speakers but Unicron's comes out of all 5 and the Sub, really hammers in the feeling of Unicron being planet sized.

I go to three to one odds in favor of Unicron in the fight. And I also praise Unicron for being a more efficient eater. Galactus leaves dead husks behind, when Unicron eats a planet he cleans his fucking plate.

@@3Rayfire They do different things. Galactus is apparently trying to stave off entropy, while Unicron IS entropy.

heh imagine if Megatron was trying to haggle for a better deal? Megatron: I BELONG TO NOBODY! (Heh reject his first offer and he'll sweeten the deal!) Unicron: Perhaps I misjudged you...proceed on your way to Oblivion... Megatron: sweet I get a free vacation too? Thundercracker: um Megatron I don't think that's what he meant...

I always loved this exchange, how it shows that even in the face of a supreme entity, Megatron is still Megatron. It's like Hitler is arguing with the Devil.
