Another informative vlog. However, I don't think the engine will run right until you sort out the exhaust. I don't know if there's one fitted, but it sounds like it's got open headers! These engines need exhaust back pressure to run properly, so you're banging your head on a brick wall until you sort that out. Hope this helps.👍 👍

The headers are on, its just the rest of the exhaust that isn't, as soon as its been stone guarded we'll chuck it back on and see if it helps

It does sound like it has vacuum leaks with the high revs on startup. Ideally you'd want to plug it in diagnostics so what's really going may be worth looking at Rovergauge one of few software's that can talk to the old lucas computer

Try disconnecting the throttle potentiometer- they wear out and can cause driveabilty issues. Using a multimeter votage should rise smoothly as the throttle is opened.Engine should still run with it unplugged but you won't get full throttle.
@TransformotionVR8 ай бұрын
Thanks mate, well give that a go 😉
@andresrojas52228 ай бұрын
There are a few things that come to mind, it could be old fuel in the system, also the ecu on those things is on a terrible location so I had seen several corrode over time because of water ingress. It could also be the temperature sensor that is acting up, check with a multimeter to find out if it’s on spec or just replace altogether. It could also be the stepper motor for the idle control or the throttle position sensor or its adjustment. Don’t believe it’s an ignition problem and would keep the old parts like the cap and rotor on hand since new parts can be crap, had seen several of them not last more than a few miles, would just clean the old with a brush and have handy.
@TransformotionVR8 ай бұрын
The fuel is new so isn't that, the only thing that hasn't been checked on the fuel system is the fuel regulator and that's been ordered. We've got a couple of air leaks so we're working on sorting them too. A few vac lines look a bit worse for wear so they'll get changed and I'm going to borrow a test light and check the ignition timing after that

may be worth checking the distributor itself. some cars have weights in the bottom of the distributor which get flung out to change the timing of the spark as you put more throttle in. if these are seized it can cause lazy throttle response. also if you have got air leaks that may be preventing the vacuum advance on the spark as well. hope you get to the bottom of the issue soon
@TransformotionVR8 ай бұрын
Nice one mate! I didnt know about the weights, it's somthing that's on the list, we've got a few bits ordered if they done fix it then we'll move on to that 😉

Perhaps the ECU is getting old ? Also some engines don't like running with out the back pressure from the exhaust system but having no experience with RR's I couldn't say one way or the other. Another also, it's a K reg right ? '93 so has it got O2 Lamda sensor/s and if the exhaust isn't fitted are they awol ? BTW tidy welding, nice.
@TransformotionVR8 ай бұрын

14CUX balances the mixture in essentially 2 ways AFM and Lambda. That AFM you fitted is complete junk they don't work I've proved it on my own RRC you need a genuine Lucas/Hitachi 3AM AFM it sounds like your running lean. Presumably this is a pre-catalytic converter car running the green tune resistor and no lambda sensors. The AFM signal is vital on this map and it won't ever run properly unless it's reading the correct AFM signal. If it was a cat tune running lambda sensors on a white tune resistor the AFM signal isn't as important as the fuel is adjusted via the lambda sensors. Do this before anything else otherwise your just going to be chasing false issues trust me. Another culprit is the TPS but fit a genuine AFM before you do anything else.
@TransformotionVR8 ай бұрын
You sound like you've had these issues before ha ha ill speak to the RR specialist who we got that off and see what they're saying, I think it is pre cat
@anti-social-media8 ай бұрын
I have, it's infuriating. The 14CUX ECU receives 2 signals from the AFM an exposed and closed reading. The exposed resistor measures air passing over it and the closed reading is a separate isolated resistor that sends a reference signal for comparison with the open resistor. These values aren't that important if it has lambda sensors because the fuel map will be trimmed using the lambda sensors. If the AFM signal is lost then it will go into an extremely rich default fuel MAP. Those cheap AFM only serve a purpose on cars fitted with lambdas because they are totally inaccurate but stop the ECU going into default mode and allow the lambdas to carry on trimming the fuel map. The 14CUX has what it calls "Tune Resistors" which depending on it's age and what region the vehicle was sold in will determine what fuel map to use. A pre cat car without lambda sensors will be fitted with a green tune resistor and it's AFM is vital for setting fuel trims. I've done side by side comparisons with both original and copy AFM and whilst the idle reading is roughly the same as soon as you rev the engine the copy will under read and run extremely lean causing back firing through the intake and all manner of other issues rendering it un-drivable and sending you off on all manner of false fault finding exercises. I've been debating making a video to explain this because there isn't any information about it online but I just haven't had the time. Final note some Jaguar XJ6s from the 80s used the same Lucas/Hitachi 3AM AFM so you can widen your search on eBay a bit, it will be written on the top what type it is.
