In an incredibly rare interview, Victoria Derbyshire speaks to two young transgender children, to get an insight into what their lives are like and what help and support is available for other children in their position. Victoria Derbyshire has been speaking to two of the youngest transgender children in the UK - with permission from their parents and with the support of the children's schools. How about we let male and female children play with what they want and dress and act how they like??? When we give in to the idea that our child is "too feminine" or "too masculine" to be "cis" , we are *affirming gender stereotypes*!! I want to live in a world where a girly BOY doesn't feel compelled to transition into a girl in order to be himself!

I agree, but not with this situation. As Noel said in one of the previous comments, there is a major difference in wanting to be a girl and wanting to play with stereotypical girl things.

why in the fuck would you support this kind of behavior. I get adult being transgender, I couldn't care less but kids are way to young and naive to make these kind of decisions. I also love how most of these videos are just incredubly regresive."Oh my 6 year old likes pink and dresses, Fuck me I guess he's a girl now", that's just plain gender stereotypes, you can be a boy who likes dresses. I want to see how many of these kids lead a normal life in the future, this is negligence on a different level.

it's society who teaches kids that eg. dresses are for girls. if a boy wants to wear a dress because he wants to, he's likely to say that he wants to be a girl instead - not their fault. don't say "KiDs aRe ToO yOuNg tO bE tRaNs" because as a kid i said i wanted to be a girl, and this remains true 20 years later as a grown-woman

I find that the media only ever focuses on trans woman or girls and I actually grew up thinking the word trans was only associated with woman until I realized I was a trans guy

It is so frustrating to watch this. Why are we allowing children as young as six years old to believe that gender is a choice? Why do these parents believe that allowing their child to be a different gender than what they are born is the loving thing to do? How about teaching them to love and accept themselves for who they are? By showing them that it's okay to play and dress how they want. That they shouldn't live by stereotypes. What's wrong with this approach?

To be honest...identity is a difficult one. This is why we are children for so long. I'm 39 and I'm still wondering who I am- not gender or sexual wise- just in general. However everyone around me seems to know who I am, at least that's my experience of being around others over the years. Cant say I agree with everyone...but they cant all be wrong, not when they all come to the same conclusion. Jury is still out for me. I'm not sure I will ever truly understand who I am. Which raises the ?....do these trans kids understand who they are. Difficult to conclude.

they do not want to be trans. they want to be their real gender, but they born with the wrong body. no one wants to have gender dysphoria.

I've know since I was 6 that I'm really a girl. I told my mum aged 8 and got the help beaten out of me

It is an extremely basic decision: binary, yes or no. There is no in between, no shades of grey. There are only 2 sexes. If there is a modicum of doubt then it's a no-go. If they are 100% sure for 5-10 years it's (almost certainly) not like a phase that many kids have.

Its very important that children don't have hormone treaments or chemical hormone blockers or have any surgery until they are grown up enough to undestand all the physical, mental and emotional effects!

Three points here: 1: the minimum age for HRT in the UK is 16, which is old enough. 2: the minimum age for surgery in the UK is 18, which is when they'll be an adult. 3: the whole point of hormone blockers is so no permanent changes happen until they know for sure, and to prevent unwanted puberty of their assigned sex at birth.

I agree, but this film makes me think delaying puberty could be fine in some circumstances. For example, if they have transitioned for at least 5 years already and puberty can be paused, I have no idea if science supports it.

all my fucking chilhood i ran around wearing boy clothes, going by a boys name, playing with boy toys and preferred playing with boys overall, yet somehow i have still grown up to be a fully functional adult female WHO KNEW I WAS A TRANSGENDER KID

Nix Arnett this video misrepresents being transgender as being all about gender roles. And of course it will seem that way when you interview a young child- that's how *most* children at her developmental level think of gender. In studies of gender variant children, the trait most associated with later transition wasn't whether they played with trucks or dolls, but whether they claimed they *were* a certain gender, or whether they expressed fear of growing up to be their assigned sex. When I was a kid, I played with boys and girls. I didn't go by a boys name (though I tried to think one up), and although I called myself a tomboy I wasn't very sporty or aggressive- I liked music and animals, I cried easily, and I was so unathletic it concerned my parents. But, even though I never told anyone, I quietly dreaded the coming of puberty. I can remember looking down my shirt when I was 8 to make sure I hadn't started developing breasts yet. When we watched those "puberty and you" videos in 5th grade, I saw a scene where a young boy holds a magnifying glass to the mirror, and finds his first chin hair. I remember feeling excited, imagining finding a chin hair on myself, then sadness, realizing I never would, then disgust and fear, because I wasn't supposed to think about those things. Trans people don't see ourselves as the other gender because of gender roles- we cling to gender roles to reaffirm something in ourselves, much like an insecure man might take up boxing to prove to himself he's a "real man".

I wish the media focussed on trans guys as much as trans girls because I’m a trans guy and just feel different and weird and scared. I’m in the closet due to transphobic family.. Edit: two years later and I’m still closeted XD getting a job later this year and hopefully can work towards transitioning secretly in some ways. Will be moving out as soon as I can :)

A child born male should be raised male and a child born female should be raised female. Children do not have cognitive faculties developed in their brains until later ages. To tell a child they can "choose whether they want to be a boy or girl" is bad parenting plain and simple. When the child reaches an age of cognitive development and that said child is experiencing "gender identity" then perhaps it is worth taking a look at. Puberty should also play a major factor, as trying to give KIDS the ability to define themselves when they are not even developed is poor parenting. In summary, let the child grow and develop while raising them the way they were born. If the child experiences problems with the way they are raised and how they "feel" AFTER their brains are actually developed then perhaps it deserves a deeper look. In the age of political correctness and being 'hip' we are witnessing a number of parents letting a non-developed mind guide itself, when it needs concrete guidance from a concrete (developed) brain.

+CHADDERSON1 well,Your ignorant theory sucks. i am 37yrs old trans woman and i transitioned when i was 13yrs of age ,,that's more than two decades ago and i wish i would have transitioned earlier.Gender is set between 3 and 5yrs old,i know who i was when i was that young.I command these parents for supporting their child wish my parents were so supportive,,not like in my case that i had to run away at 13yrs to have my identity,luckily i met some trans people that looked after me and i could get hold of hormones and puberty blockers so my body never developed as a male ,which it was a nightmare and many suicide attempts but than there was the light and my life got much better since transitioning ,expecially in my teen years,my transition was very easy,basic and fast cos i was so young. I have been on my own ever since but i have always had my true identity!!!

i didn't just found some pills on my mother's draw and took them.I RUN AWAY FROM HOME at 13YRS OLD BECAUSE I COULDN'T BE MYSELF AND STAYED ON THE STREETS WITHOUT ANY GOVERNMENT HELP BECAUSE I AM TRANS,SO I WAS CONSIDERED A SECOND CLASS CITIZEN ,NOBODY WOULD GIVE U A JOB COS BACK THAN I COULDNT CHANGE MY ID, EVEN TO RENT A FLAT,I HAD TO LIVE IN A SQUAT TILL I WAS 18YRS BUT AGAIN I'M GLAD IT WENT THIS WAY BECAUSE I'VE ALWAYS LIVED AUTHENTICALLY SINCE A YOUNG AGE,IF I WOULD HAVE WAITED MALE CHARATERISTICS WOULD HAVE APPEARED AND IT WOULD HAVE BEEN MUCH HARDER TO TRANSITiION.Mine was easy and fast.Do you prefer these kids run away from home as well? i was one of those kids, it was tough for me but the most important thing I had my identity and i have always seen myself in the mirror like i always felt, or should we wait these kids go and kill themselves because u know trans suicides are 41% because society makes it hard,although it's getting slightly better. i could have never lived and being recognised as a male and female hormones don't change how you feel and don't interact with your brain!!I AM 37 AND STILL FEEL and LIVED AUTHENTICALLY SINCE I CAN REMEMBER

Why is everything so gendered? I was looking at the photos of me as a kid in the 90s the other day and the kids were all wearing pretty similar stuff - hideous polar fleece jumpers and T shirts and leggings - but it was chilled out. We only ever wore dresses for special occasions really.

I've been bingewatching transgender children documentaries for a few days now. And I think it's wonderful how supporting most of the parents are. I always think: Why are there GIRLS and BOYS stigmatized clothes and toys, when most of the children are very genderfluid and would like to belong to the one or the other or both stereotypical sexes. A child I know loves dressing up as a girl.. but can only do it when he is at my moms house.(She's a daycare nanny). But at home he doesn't do it. his mom isn't happy about it.. He still identifies as a boy though, and I asked him, carefully, what he wants to be when he's grown up, and he says he's going to be a dad and a fireman.. eg. But he likes high heels. TOTALLY ok with me :) I think it happens that boys that just want to play with Barbies eg, and they think they must be a girl then. And they say they want to be a girl, because they like girlish stuff. And a doctor in one of the videos said: There are only 25% of the children being transgender, still want it when they're grown up. It's kind of sad if you think about it, how children are shamed about having girlish/boyish interests in their activities. That's why I think real transgenderism(lol what..) is maybe more of a sexual puberty/mature thing.. while about 75% of the children just have other interests than their stereotypical gender. And that's PERFECTLY fine. You still want to be a boy or girl when you're 12,13,14? THATS FINE! :) Children need support, they need endorsement, especially if they have non-stereotypical interests...They have a tough start in life in our society :( Sad stereotypes the children are put in..

+Nati Whatever I agree, as a trans person who is young, around the start of puberty is when things started to get hard and I developed a real hatred towards my body. Parents need to understand that it isn't easy and they should be more supportive and accepting.

I kinda agree, I always didn't like dresses, liked to build stuff, and was the dad when we played house and things like that when I was young, but I never really felt any dysphoria or discomfort in my body until I reached puberty.

They said "I'm sort of a boy", and "Because I don't want to be a girl... I mean... a boy". These two slip ups, show they aren't sure, or are faking it for attention.

Hey, I'm the girl from the video! No, it wasn't because I was faking it or I wasn't sure, it was because I had social anxiety and a speech impediment. And yeah, I'm still trans. 10+ years sure is a long time for someone to "fake" something for attention

I do think there is some kind of tampering that causes females to be born/put in to male bodies. Maybe even on some extra dimensional influenced level who knows. However, such genuine people make up a tiny minority, the perverse and weirdos are what make it up for a large part. Promoting the poisoning of minds of young children is very sick. 1 Child out of 100 who might genuinly have been tampered with on some biological or spiritual level... Is no excuse for trying to apply this to every child... It's sick twisted, perverted a violation of human rights. It is child abuse. The people promoting this as anything else are 95 times out of 100 shills promoting a sick agenda.

@Sydney Piper Bristow I think that the concern is that some children might have been coerced into it, which doesn't seem to have been the case in these two cases, but in some cases it has been. She literally told the kid that living as a boy would mean not being allowed to play with certain toys or wear certain clothes. Instead she should've said there's no such thing as "girl toys" or "girl clothes" and there's nothing wrong with being a feminine boy. Kids are being taught that their gender is just what stereotypes they conform to and being medicalised based on that, and we're supposed to believe that's the accepting, progressive thing to do?

As a child I hated pink, dresses and dolls, I loved sports wear and cars and what is considered boy toys....my parents supported me, I had a huge collection of legos and almost no dress in my wardrobe. Now I'm an adult woman, I'm married with four beautiful children and I never questioned my "gender identity", not because I was neglected or oppressed but just because all of this bullshit wasn't around when I was a child, and I thank God my parents never once told me " oh you like to dress and play as a boy, no problemo you can become a boy". What is wrong with this generation😢

The problem is that the trans suicide rate is incredibly high compared to the general population. So when mothers enable this type of dysphoric behaviour they are facilitating suicide in later life.

@@Marc_Lambert It's really the other way around. Most of the trans people who have suicidal thoughts come from surrouindings that don't accept them or don't take them seriously. The fact that the mom is loving and suppoting her child's own expression, while still being cautious and getting educated on the matter, is really the most sensible and safest choice for the child.

@@tetrahedron1000 I understand that sentiment. I agree that people shouldn't be allowed to medically transition until they're at least 18 and informed. Which is pretty much how it works in the UK anyway atm. I agree that blockers should be offered to children under 18 tho. They cause little harm and few side effects while allowing the child time to learn about themselves before feeling like they have to rush into a decision. I also support social transition before the age of 18 if the circumstances mean that the child would be safe to do so. I don't see anything wrong with kids expressing who they are, trans or not

Guys I get it, you think the kids too young to know and their brain isn’t developed yet. However, if this kid feels that she identifies as a girl that’s fine and she can always make another realization later in life that she was possibly incorrect. Or that it was actually just a phase. Of course detransitioning sucks a lot and there should definitely be some therapy going on here a little later. Just for now that’s how the kid identifies

My 13 year old granddaughter wants to be a boy. She/he is in the process of taking hormone shots. She/he says she/he is going to start taking testosterone soon. Her parents have permitted her to do so. Does coming from divorced parents have anything to do with it ? The fact that both parents were religious and now aren't? The fact that one parent is addicted to pornography, and the other has several LBGT friends? Or that her mother created a Facebook page for her/him as transgender 2 days after she/he told her she/he wanted to TRY and be a boy FOR A WEEK. BEFORE she consulted with her ex! I just don't know. My son found out his daughter wanted to transgend when he saw her/his Facebook page! My son didn't know what to do, but he loves his daughter/son and wants her/him to be as happy as she/he can be. She/he was in a depression before this occurred and now seems a lot happier. She/he is also seeing a therapist. Time will tell....

I hope everything works out for your granddaughter. The issues you raised are commonly the issues that are around transgender children but not discussed. Without getting the head bite off me here in these comments, it is a fact that must be taking into consideration, home life, family relationships, role models etc. Again no hate in my heart we are who we are, but there are other issues that need to be addressed before medical intervention I think is the safest.

They do not understand the struggles they will face as they get older and developing that strong base of confidence and unconditional love will help them get through the barriers that society puts in front of them to question their inner being. I know someone who took puberty blockers when they were younger & now this person is suing their parents. This person cannot experience pleasurable sex among other health complications because their parents put them on puberty blockers. Is it me or does the interviewer seem somewhat biased throughout this interview.. I keep looking at her facial expressions and all i can see is contempt. I feel like these interviews are more about sensationalism rather than building a better awareness of the trans culture. Frankly if trans individuals discover themselves earlier i believe that they'll be happier as they can transition earlier. I think that gender reassignment should be done before puberty for the sake of the individuals well being. These comments are filled with such ignorance and contempt. I'm sorry but you can't judge a way a parent brings up their children because each child is different so must be cared for differently. If you think you can treat all children the same then really you should reconsider your own parenting methods. I seriously hope that the future generations are not as judgemental, ignorant or as contempt as a lot of these comments make you seem.

+Michaela-amy Hayes : If you perform geneder affirmation surgery (it's not exactly reassignment actually, because it's being changed to what suits the brain basically) before puberty you risk a lot of serious problems because a body tends to grow rapidly during puberty, surgically altering the body is not advisable because of that. I agree with the fact what you say about being able to discover themself earlier, I would have loved to have known more about it when I was younger, after feeling different for quite some time. What I do notice when comparing American documentaires (or even the UK ones) to a beautiful Dutch one, is that the emphasizes is usually on the difficulties someone is going through or, how the genitals are oh so important to discuss. While trangender people can face serious bullying and other kinds of abuse, it creates this sort of scary world for other parents who are only discovering what might be wrong with their child. The Dutch documentary Valentijn from Hetty Nietsch (unfortunately it's not on KZbin and when it was it didn't have English translations) was so wordly different compared to most of the stuff I can find on KZbin from countries other than The Netherlands.

For the 100th time: A child that age usually is sterile to begin with, in the sense that he or she is not able to reproduce, because they did not go through puberty. By the way, taking puberty blockers is a reversible process, when a child stops using them he or she will develop as a biological male or female, with genitals functioning the way they should.

I wore my mothers make up, she still has a picture she likes showing of me wearing her high heels and having her lipstick (which I broke) on from the time I was 6, my aunties used to dress me in skirts, all my best friends were girls(until 7th grade) we had tea parties and we played with barbies, I didn't like playing football with the guys and I still don't yet when I grew up I became a man, and that photo was shown to my fiancé, soon to be wife hopefully. Why do people force their ideals on children when research has shown trans children and young adolescents may not stay that way, worst is when parents allow hormonal blockage or treatment that early once you're 16/17 and you choose to be trans then I have to respect that!

The problem is that for trans people, by age 18 a decision *has* been made for them, one that can carry repercussions for the rest of their lives. Going through puberty, for transgender people, can lead to lifelong symptoms consistent with what you'd see in someone who had gone through a prolonged traumatic event. And the physical changes of puberty can often put trans people in physical danger- the more obviously transgender someone is, the more likely they are to be fired without cause, or denied housing purely based on their gender, or even physically assaulted. I agree that pushing a kid to be trans is child abuse. But so if trying to suppress gender nonconformity. I agree that no one should let their child make irreversible changes that young, but no one in this video is doing that. As far as I know, no one is performing genital surgery on 8 year old trans kids. Most doctors won't prescribe opposite sex hormones until age 16. The hormone suppressants given to pre-and early pubescent trans kids don't prevent puberty, they just *delay* it so that the children will have more time to mature before deciding whether to transition.

My understanding about the BBC2 "Kids Who Knows Best" Doc. was a response to a previous BBC doc about transgender children that was biased in favor of the transgender community without a balance of other views. So, if this Doc "Kids" seems bias in another direction this is probably why. Also, the detail that you wished had been in this documentary would have to be made into a series with several episodes. This documentary was only 1 hr long. I just watched it; I thought it was good. It touched on several different issues so if people were interested they could do further research on the subject. It seems to me there is plenty of positive transition media biased in favor of transitioning as this documentary states. Probably due to the activism and normalizing from the LGB and now T over the last several decades. It is very difficult to find material that is trying to take a broader view while also accepting that some people are in fact transgender which I think this documentary did. Most of what I have found on the subject swings from Radical Feminist rejection of transgender being a real biological factor to any time a child says they are a boy when their natal sex is female or when a girl says they are a boy should be taken as fact by the trans activists who are not BTW scientists or professional psychiatrists. One more point, I'm a single mother, I had three daughters, I also have three sister, no brothers, there weren't many male figures in my life. My youngest daughter when she was quit young and into early puberty very much identified with boys and when she was little 3-4 y/o wanted to be called Jeffrey. She had a big crush on a boy in her preschool at the time who's name was Jeffrey. She was quit serious and adamant about it, getting angry if I forgot to call her Jeffrey which was all the time. My daughter grew out of her feelings of male identity and feels completely comfortable in her female body and she came to that on her own during puberty by the age of 15. This started in the mid 1980's before the advent of transgender becoming so popularized. I hadn't even heard the term transgender until the early 2000's. I think if my daughter was growing up today with the societal transgender messages of acceptance would have really confused her and she may have very well decided she was trans when she is not. I never pushed female or male stereotypes on my daughters and all three were raised with strong female stories, imagery and messages to identify with. I deliberately sought out children's stories with a feminist perspective. They were and are not your typical passive females and they all identify as female.

Dress as you want, destroy your own adult body if you want, but keep your delusions to your self. Stay away from children, the young and the vulnerable. Young people with psychological problems (autism and/or abused or simply homosexual) must be helped, not displayed and not transitioned. The GRA (2004) must be repealed. No self-id. And Mermaids et al must get out of schools. Safeguarding of children and young people must be the priority. (N.B. No one can change sex.)

The Tavistock clinic was experimenting on patients with LSD without their knowledge in the 50s and early 60s. I wouldn't trust them. The parents did not RAISE them correctly, did not give them a sense of who they are, so they let 4 years olds decide in their confusion a life style that will affect them for life.
