I admire your abilities and most of all your willingness to take on such a rusty vehicle. I don't think one in that shape would be tackled over here unless it was a rare high dollar car of some sorts, but that's only my thoughts.

Great video. 1 question- how did you attach the top of the step to the floor by the seat rail? Did you weld flush or overlap and drilled holes and spot weld? Cheers Vinny!

Hi mate, thanks for your kind words. I did an overlap .. seemed stronger that way... over a year has passed now and still looks like new..no rust coming through...

Hey mate, where did you get your panels from? Also i see you were MIG welding, what sort of amps were you running? I'm currently saving an old transit mk5 ex ambulance and spotted today that the sills were shot. Some one of the previous owners filled with expanding foam and then filled it :( Great video though, very helpful for when I go at mine :)

Hi Mate, I got the Panels on line from Central Panels. I did buy myself another welder. I got an OXFORD welder. More reliable and steady power. The sealy one was a 150 amp

Are the repair panels originally part of one section or were they welded on seperately?
@paphotography5183
@paphotography5183 7 жыл бұрын
Michael Langley it's all welded separately... the inner arch original is spot welded on the wings also spot welded... my out riggers were originally spot welded .....badly.. I've seam welded everything on so it's strong...

So much rust! Why do transits do this can it be prevented?
@paphotography5183

I think its down to poor steel quality and prep work of the metal. All the new panels I've fitted I treated with the best primer, used tiger seal on the welds... it's been over a year since I finished the old girl and so far no rust patches whatsoever...😁

Would you say that the mk5 Transit had design faults?
@paphotography5183
@paphotography5183 6 жыл бұрын
Michael Langley Not so much design faults other than welding on wings which you could bolt on. If they bothered to treat the steel they would rot as they do. I treated the inner wheel arches with epoxy primer and guess what ... no rust coming through, even on the areas were I have welder.... I've seen mk7 transit with inner sills gone...not good
@jaggass
@jaggass 6 жыл бұрын
The repairs you have done will last along time. The lack of protection was the biggest issue on mk4/5 Transits. If Ford galvanized the bodies then they might not have rusted as bad. They also have water traps too at the bottom of the back doors on vans, steps, arches etc. You can't fault the Ford DI banana engine. Its bombproof. I think Ford have finally got the rust issues under control now on the Transits and other models.

Michael Langley I must admit to being shocked by some of the modern designs. I have recently done several transit customs were they had a so-called service. Then displaying water in fuel faults. On investigation I have found that the fuel filters are not being replaced, the filters on the custom are located underneath the nearside and get covered in mud and crud. The can be a pain to twist of as they are a cartridge type in a plastic casing. Plenty of WD40 and huge grips is the only way. Also I had to change REAR door hinges on a custom due to...........rust...lol. They have improved butmi do think the quality of the steel is poor. Bring back our own steel industry and do away with cheap import. Hope your well mate. Oh I've set my own business up now doing mobile.... check out my page...www.paulsbreakdownsolutions. co.uk also on Facebook too

piston head 1243 Yeh even the modern transits rot quickly at least I've saved this one from scrap heap.... MOT in the next few weeks so fingers crossed. Love the old DI engines so reliable, nice and basic, bit slow but plod along. I've blanked the EGR valve which has improved things, .....

What ever sort of steel or galvinizing Ford used was poor but mind you our climate doesn't help either. Mercedes Sprinters are even worse for rust.

Michael Langley .... I have noticed with some panels I buy off the net are rubbish for welding.... cheap nasty import steal.... ... and they rot so quick.. I use red oxide on everything it does help to keep it at bay..
@jaggass
@jaggass 7 жыл бұрын
Red oxide is good. Used it when i found rust under my platelight and other areas. Sadly the rust came back under the plate light since its a water trap.Now sanded all the rust and treated it with Vactan.
