Thank you for this video! I am currently reading Laurence Bergreen's 'Over the Edige of the World," the story of Magellan's Voyage of Discovery to the Spice Islands and wanted to see exactly what the Strait looks like. This video was very helpful and shows the challenges Magellan faced in assessing each strait and bay he encountered as he searched for the route to the Pacific Ocean. What a great accomplishment and this video shows how difficult it was, perhaps the greatest maritime achievement of all time.

Try doing that in an old sailing ship in bad weather, not knowing if it goes through. The advantage might be that the tidal currents could be noticed, if there are any. Notice that some of the clouds seem to blow up in lines from over a mountain or something, and then fade out when they drop over the strait.

Whow, you better know what direction you‘re heading! Beautiful footage. I vivedly remember reading as a kid about Magellan‘s first struggle through there, taking almost every wrong turn possible until they finally reached the Pacific Ocean - and troubles even just started there! As we all know he never made it back to Europe, but one ship of his fleet did.

Wow, thank you so much for this video, the dangers involved in transiting these straits in the days of sail cannot be overstated, except it was safer than rounding the horn...I can't imagine how difficult it was for the sailors when the winds were contrary...

Great video - thanks a lot ❗️Ever since I wrote about Magellan in primary school, I have always been fascinated by this strait. Ever since then, I have sailed the Danish waters and still dream to cross the Atlantic, when I retire. But I don’t think that I will ever get the opportunity -nor the money - to go and sail the Magallan Strait. At least, it was great to se your video.

Lovely footage! That was a long and narrow passage where it would be very easy to take the wrong turn - if you were Magellan at least. If the sea he met was anything like that first day, then it makes sense to call it the "Pacific Sea"!

Excellent vid, however from the start to 3:30 it shows the canals from the English Narrows, just north of Puerto Eden, to Faro Fairway at the western end of Estrecho de Magallanes. Only the last minute shows the strait itself - west of Cabo Froward. Nothing wrong with that as east of Cabo Froward to the Atlantic is as boring as bat poo.

@@phil-zz5hk The Clovis theory has been contested by the findings at Monte Verde, in Chile, which were carbon dated as having more than 14.000 years old. Monte Verde is 41° 30'17'' S, near Puerto Montt. Not as southern as Punta Arenas, but still predates Clovis for about 1000 years, maybe more. Charles Darwin, on board of the Beagle, crossed the channel that now bears the ship's name and it is even more to the south than Magellan strait. They met natives, and had a long and very complicated story with them. The Spanish had met them before. Well, the fate of these peoples was possibly one of the worst faced by South American first nations. Take a look at the Wikipedia article "Selk'nam people" and follow from there. ✌
