I truly appreciate your video. Today, I bought CPVC, then began reading more about it. ( I know backassward). Returning it tomorrow and doing copper. Basement is entirely open. Currently, copper pipes are in, but are corroding. Original copper from 1959. Question: is it necessary/recommended to insulate the copper from outside with those tubes? Sorry, the name of the tubes slip my mind.
@StarrTile4 жыл бұрын
Yes they have the foam wrap around insulation that you could use on your copper pipes, that's assuming that you are in a very cold environment in the winter time, here in the south is not really necessary unless you're talking about the spicket near the garage that will usually freeze here in the winter... and if you do that it would only be needed on exterior pipe, the interior has ambient temperature that should never need insulation

By the way, I work in a plumbing supply store and there are very few plumbers now that use anything but pex in residential construction. None use CPVC around here and copper is only used in a few places in a home such as around a shower or tub. If you were to plumb entire houses with copper you would put yourself out of work because of the cost of the copper. You would never be able to compete with your competition price wise.

That's nonsense, that may be true with developers but with custom work it isn't, developers don't care if the house falls apart in ten years. Same tired argument for using any cut rate material, if people are willing to pay extra for something as superficial as a view why wouldn't they pay more for a better built house? NIbco had to settle out of court because their PEX would develop pinhole leaks. Zurn was sued because their brass fittings for PEX would corrode and leak. Honestly it's like Groundhog day, does anyone remember polybutylene pipe? Same assembly system as PEX, just a different type of plastic, when it got old the barbed fittings would sometimes leak, if the bands were crimped wrong it would split, like a year later. The joke's on the poor home owners if the insurance companies decide to blacklist PEX like they do with galvanized pipe, and polybutylene
@Darisiabgal75733 жыл бұрын
Plumbers like pex for one major reason, the apprentice need know nothing about pipe fitting. I’ve heard many stories about how great pex is. I watched, as a site manager, an installation today, after it was done the pex sprang leaks at 4 joints. This is a professional plumbing outfit. chlorine resistance in New Pex plastics are not rated as CPVC is, the joints do not have near the track record. Pex is the new fad on the block. CPVC is rated for 70 years when installed properly, Pex is rated for 45. Some of the Pex fittings are rated for less...... don’t be fooled by hype. The other thing about that any good general contractor knows is that wiring and piping is centered in the wall, which rigid piping does Pex wanders in the wall cavity making it more likely to take damage from home owners or remodeling contractors. In my area if a contractor can f something your pretty much guaranteed that they will. strike plates are only useful on the stud, they have no effect in the wall cavity.

I agree about CPVC ! I am very scared of connecting to old cpvc because it becomes brittle with age and any movement can potentially cause a flood. I still worry about every house where I have had to do that. I have seen extremely brittle connections at water heaters because of the higher temps. Because I am a small remodeler that does lots of bathrooms I usually always use copper and occasionally PEX. Most PEX failures in the past have been rectified. After nearly 50 years of use starting in Europe it is now considered a safe and cost effective system. I prefer the more expensive Uponor system.

I moved into 40 year old house 6 years ago. I had 3 pin-hole leaks in copper in first year. I did research on CPVC. It is the most chemically stable product. Do not allow ammonia (in cleaning products) to touch it. Keep it out of sunlight (or any UV light). My brother is a plumber. told me to hand saw it. Tools that cut it cause all kinds of weak points. Cpvc comes in same sizes as copper pipe. I re-plumbed entire house in weekend for 200 dollars. Bear in mind, i am on a well, so i do not have chlorine in water. Also note: cpvc and pvc have been used in europe for over 50 years. I kept all left over pipe, Every 5 years i plan to take a left over piece of pipe out and try to break it. Last year( 5 year mark) i tried to break a 3 ft piece by bending it. Even stepped on mid point to break it in halve. Nope, after about 15 minutes and many bends back and forth it broke. i will do this every 5 years. Once i can easily break it, or it is too brittle, I will re-plumb whole hose again, in one weekend for 200 dollars again. My well is acidic, (ph of 5-6) all copper removed was super shinny inside and parts were paper thin, after 40 years....M rated swiss cheese.
@StarrTile6 жыл бұрын
I suppose we all have our own experiences...I've RARELY run into issues ( here ) with copper, but I always see CPVC break and be VERY brittle...If someone GAVE me a truck load of CPVC I'd sell it on CraigsList or burn it.
@mikegregeris40696 жыл бұрын
Trust me, I did not want to use plastic, but my options were limited. My brother warned me, it will become brittle, (he thinks 30 years), hence my 5 year test method.. However, given my well, he thought copper might only last 30 years too. Pex around here only has the fittings with copper in them, so same problem as copper, just less mass so issues will most likely accelerate on pex fittings. All things taken into consideration, i decided to save money on parts and labor...btw, i have had two leaks since install, both on brass fittings for well tank, last copper/brass on my supply lines and only thing in my house installed by professional plumber. lol!

Yes I know how to sweat pipe, worked as a welder for many years. Money is the only reason I would stay away from Sharks. I would use Pex, but the startup cost I think is high for the tools needed. Today I will be adding a shark tee with a valve and then transition to cpvc. Live your posts, but I think this is mostly opinion. Thanks

Yeah I agree, I worked for a huge new construction plumbing company. They use sharkbite shutoffs for every dishwasher supply line. I have never had one fail and have used hundreds over the years. You just have to be sure the pipes are clean and not at any kind of angle when you hook them up.

I wouldn't do any other way. Not one issue since the installation and I know it will be fine for many more years to come. I will not live another hundred years to see if it holds up but, from what I can see today, it will 😆😆😆. #PEX IS GREAT! 😆😆👍👍👍

StarrTile never heard of that one before, but I guess it could happen. So I better keep the rat's out.
I have used countless sharkbites over the years. Have never had one fail. I think if a sharkbite fails it is most likely the installer's fault. Make sure the pipes are completely straight (no slight angle where it connects) and clean. I use a sharpie to mark on the pipe how deep it needs to go before installing to be sure it's on all the way. When connecting to copper always hit the pipe with sand cloth too.

Pex has been out for at 50 years it’s been used on in floor radiant heat for a long time safe to put in concrete slab with a jacket on it just like you do with copper . One thing you don’t have to worry about is electrolysis like some other guys were saying about your galvanized strap on your copper pipe Pex has changed the plumbing world until they tried introducing plastic fittings for it. They got in trouble with them and ended up going back to brass it’s really a great product for cold environments will freeze but want bust

I have been on sites where shit happens. It's always good to have some sort of flexible long pipe around. Kinda like a vacuum hose. You can put it over the spray leak as best as possible and lead the other end into the toilet or tub next to you. Or even start filling buckets.

twice i had used teflon tape on the bathtub faucet connection to 1/2 copper and both times the tape split the faucet fittings causing 2 floods not to mention that faucet was $100 both times. now i only use pipe dope. also i heard the white colored pex is not supposed to be located next to fluorescent light because it has no uv protection. had a plumber here years ago he installed that awful grey polybutylene crap that broke over & over to.

Man I wish I had seen that these sealant tip before. I used Teflon tape on a similar transition and had to use a 14" wrench to get enough torque to make the connection truly water tight! I'm tempted to open up the other side of the wall to do it the best way.
@hotbam375 жыл бұрын
I find that using too much tape is bad too. The fitting becomes too hard to turn leading to half screwed fittings, then they leak. I hardly ever put more than five wraps around any fitting and then I screw it all the way. I watch people wrap it ten times and then get half as far tightening it. Then they hate the tape unfairly lol.
@TonyWadkins6 жыл бұрын
Concerning PTFE thread sealant tape (aka Teflon tape). Never use it on plastic pvc or cpvc threads because it exerts a lot of unnecessary force on the plastic fitting especially a plastic female thread because it can cause it to expand and split . Copper is more ductile and can handle the stress. PTFE tape comes in varying thicknesses. Even with the cheapest thinnest stuff you only need 4 or 5 wraps.
@mgabrielle23433 жыл бұрын
true, I had a scenario where water started to leak, thereby requiring a few more wraps of PTFE tape, but this caused the plastic fitting to crack , so to avoid it cracking any more I used a jubilee clip as used in cars on various hoses, to stop any fitting from splitting, this even allowed me to use the split fitting without waiting for a new one to be put on set in PVC cement, as that requires time to cure, It has been like 10 years now it has not leaked or cracked any further, as Jubilee clip is doing its job well.

I have seen multiple copper failures shortly after new builds or remodels. Copper pipes will take nailer hit and not leak for up to a year, then start leaking long after the finish carpenter and plumber are long gone. Copper pipes are the most prone to bursting during a freeze, particularly because its a great conductor of heat. They are also susceptible to pitting if fluid pH and Ca2+ concentration is not maintained. I like copper for some applications, but it is not a universally useful pipe as author seems to suggest. In addition copper metal is reducing and in dead end pipes such as safety showers and sprinkler systems it promotes the growth of anaerobic bacteria and hydrogen sulfide gas. For this reason unbaffled hammer arrestors are no longer allowed. CPVC is not susceptible to chlorine damage like Pex, does not undergo acid pitting, it is bacteria resistant. it has the drawback of being brittle when used outside or in unventilated attics (temp >160F). It should be wrapped always with approved insulator to prevent chemical contact. During drought rodents have been known to gnaw PVC and cPVC to get water. I have seen cPVC substantially abused in unventilated attic spaces and still not break. Don’t be fooled by opinion or propoganda . . . . Copper has well known pitfalls. There are a couple of videos by Matt Risinger about the freeze and Nailer susceptibility of copper. It’s not that copper succumbs to being nailed, its that it succumbs in a delayed manner once the trades have gone and are no longer accountable for their work.

Sharkbite is a junk Australian design with heavy marketing pushing it for lazy plumbing service. The rubber O-ring that seals the sharkbite will dry out after 15-20 years and total caos will seattle in. Anyone with mechanical knowledge can understand what I am talking about. Today things are being developed to speed things up, while quality and life span are being ignored. Why? Do not know, maybe to keep service/repair business going, or maybe people that own a 15 years old home will dump it and buy new one affraid of all current issues. Our homes nowadays are cheaply built, while prices keep going up.

Apex, it is much more accurate a prediction then plastic in any scenario. Plastic's are not that hardy and there is an issue with metals in combination so you do have to get it right. Lets leave out the freezing part as that should be taken into account when installing something; anything. Copper is going to have the less mean time to failure of any product we have easily available at the moment. I do not expect that to change anytime soon. It is absolutely dependent on isolation of the product from other metals which is doable. Copper is the best no if or and's about it. Please do Copper as your clients will have peace of mind; but do it correctly. It's important.
@curiosity23146 жыл бұрын
As far as the Elbows go, you might knock a couple of years off but they will be around a very long time as apposed to Iron or plastic. I'd say knock a year or two off but that is about it. In our time it is one of those super metals. Affordable to today, get it while you can.

Copper around this area will not last 30 years before pinhole leaks start, usually less. Do not know if the city water dept can not control the pH or if it is other chemicals they use. If you are on well water, you will be lucky if you can keep the pH above 6.5 with acid neutralizer.

why not cut out the entire plastic pipe from that? having 2x a transition is not a good thing. The person recording should have known where the shut off to their house was and shut it off. Heck, even the plumber should have had it shut. Holy shit..

That was a condo, there was a cost of $150 for a licensed plumber to turn off the water for the building & back on again after work was done...they declined the fee.

The funny thing is when u did all these trying to fix it you will get the blame once another contractor comes again 😆.

My shower mixer valve to CPVC adapter failed and leaked. As I tried to unscrew it from the valve, it snapped. Not sure if it's either because the 12 year CPVC is old or the original plumber used dope instead of teflon tape... Either way, my project DIY project blew up. Now I need the whole valve replaced :(

I saw you use a shark bite, in a wall in a none accessible area, in another one of your videos. Why the change of heart?
@StarrTile5 жыл бұрын
Because of that video it was only one for the drop down off of the valve... if I had a copper cap in my toolbox that day I would have sweated the cap on, in that case there was a closet wall right behind the valve so if the shark bite ever failed there was access from a panel installed.
@travisk55895 жыл бұрын
@@StarrTile Sounds good. You should try plugs instead of caps. They are thicker metal than caps and they are male fittings.

I think In that clip he wasn't trying to fix a pipe, probably he was messing with the angle stop and bent it in such a way that CPVC will Snap On You...that's why it's so dangerous.

Stay away from CPVC, nothing wrong with PEX. Copper works the best in most situations, but not all. Highly acidic water and copper, not so much
