As someone who's new to hockey and not the best at ice skating, I am so excited for when I will be able to do this! Trying to get better this year and be on the ice alot, so I can eventually play hockey with a friend of mine!

This is the best video I’ve seen on transitions. I’ve been a good skater (for a non hockey player) for years, but recently have been driven to develop a skating skill set for hockey. You’re videos have been super helpful.

I played yesterday afternoon and during warmups I worked on large C cuts without the crossover- it worked pretty well. I just need to work on my left foot C cut- but when you are 67 I think the scouts aren't in the stands anymore. good video.

So glad i found you. I have not laced up in over 10 years and I have lost it all. Was only ever a beginner skater. Hockey has always been a passion of mine and I'm joining an adult learn to play league with hopes of also learning roller to play with my buddies. I've been binge watching all your videos and really help me understand what Im doing wrong for things i can't do and how to help evolve my skating skills. Keep these videos coming!

Good stuff as per usual! One tip I give my skaters it's to make sure you shoulders stay level to the ice and not dip. Another is to keep your shoulders as squared up forward to the play (keep the waist twist to a minimum). The J-turn transition you demonstrated is one that is fast becoming a mandatory learning tool for players PeeWee Gold and up!
@MarcelsHockeySchool
@MarcelsHockeySchool 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! You mean the shoulder not going forward and down right? Because they with automatically dip because the hips are also dipping. I just don't want the upper body going forward and down

Hey Marcel. I love your videos. One thing that you are missing in the video is that you are usually pivoting with your inside leg then lifting your outside leg off the ice. This can be seen in slow motion often in your videos. In the beginner portion you instruct to pivot with the outside foot.
@MarcelsHockeySchool
@MarcelsHockeySchool Жыл бұрын
Hi Carol, thank you! No in the beginner portion the outside leg does not pivot first, but it does ride the curve longer than at full speed. The inside leg still does the pivot, but it just doesn't lift up.

You have the best content and instructionals on KZbin. You have really helped my daughter and I make significant progress in our inline skating. I was wonderfing if the same transictions can be used in inline skating. Can the information in this video be applied to inline skaters? Thank you again for such amazing material.
@MarcelsHockeySchool
@MarcelsHockeySchool 6 ай бұрын
Thanks so much! It’s a little different on inline skates because you can’t really slide into the transition from forward to backward (backward to forward is very similar). On inline skates the forward to backward transition is more like the last version I show where you almost kind of jump, let weight of the heels and rotate into backwards.

I saw a kid yesterday skating real fast and he did a S shaped transition forwards to backwards. I bet is a great feeling. In figure skate that would be a two footed "counter".

Thanks a lot! The skates themselves are great, but I honestly think I need size 7 (the scanner put me in 7,25 left and 7,5 right), and I put in lifts between the boot and holder because the boot is a bit wider and I would hit it on the ice on sharp turns.
@steveothemagician3001

I am well past my prime- 67 now, and still favour one side to transition- my right side does the C cut. I shoot left- is this why I favour the right leg side cut? It is a great move to learn even in Beer league games.
@MarcelsHockeySchool
@MarcelsHockeySchool 9 ай бұрын
Hmmmm I’m not really sure. I think the side you prefer will more depend on if you’re right or left-footed rather than the hand you shoot.

Thanks for a great video Marcel, educational as always! Do you have any suggestions regarding the profile of the blade for someone who's trying to up their skating ?. For instance balance, transition e.g. Would you recommend a single radius or some of the popular profiles like Detroit, Quad, Elipse e.g?
@MarcelsHockeySchool
@MarcelsHockeySchool 11 ай бұрын
You’re welcome! Profile is really a matter of preference, and I find that each additional profile has diminishing returns. I noticed a big difference from a double to a single, a smaller one from triple to double, and hardly anything from quad to triple.

Hello coach. I’m an older guy that just started basically skating and playing hockey about two years ago. When I try this on my weak side (going from right to left so my left skate would be pointing towards the camera after the apex) I usually clip my outside heel edge and trip. I try to keep my contact point around the balls of my foot but I keep catching the heel at the transition part. Any tips would be appreciated! Thank you!
@MarcelsHockeySchool
@MarcelsHockeySchool Жыл бұрын
Hi, that’s fairly common actually. It means though that even though your trying to be on the balls of your foot, you really aren’t. Try to get lower because your weight will automatically transfer forward that way, and try lifting your heel off the ice while pivoting on your toes. Also, a slightly flatter sharpening might help.
@7Ghoste

Hi Marcel, I've been working on this and I find that I consistently come to a full stop and then have to start with a backwards crossover start, which is super slow. Any tips on how to avoid coming to a full stop? Thanks!
@MarcelsHockeySchool
@MarcelsHockeySchool 2 жыл бұрын
Try doing the transition in a bit wider arc and start doing the backward crossover before you are full stopped, as soon as you have your balance while you are sliding in the stopping position

Hi! Yes but it’s a bit different because you can’t slide into the transition on inline skates. So you have to rotate very quickly from forward to backward and will have a wider turning radius.
