with covid-19 & social distancing slapping us in the face, i've been feeling pretty down lately, so i decided to make some drastic changes in my life. the few days i've spent decluttering have honestly made me so incredibly happy and at peace. if minimalism is something that's calling to you, go give it a try! now's the perfect time. honestly once you get past the frustration of being surrounded by the shit you own and not being able to see the floor, it gets a lot easier and actually fun lol, i promise
thank you all for watching! don't forget to like & subscribe if you enjoyed this video ♡
and most importantly, DON'T HOARD TOILET PAPER
ps: the anime clip at the beginning of the video is from shelter by porter madison & madeon :)

Same. I recently did a massive cleaning a few weeks ago, and I feel like I can breath after being suffocated by clutter and mess for one too many years! My apartment is the cleanest it has been in over 3 years! I felt "stuck" and zapped of my energy when my apt was a mess, but I feel compelled to do things and procrastinate much less.

Hi Grace ♥ Yes i noticed that as well! It's so refreshing and relaxing to have a clean space. When did you start decluttering?
@grace7146
@grace7146 4 жыл бұрын
@@teawithromy I think I started in 2018 when my room was so cluttered and I just went through it all and got rid of loads of shit (theres literally no other word to describe it haha, I was also as sustainable possible and donated or sold and didn't just throw it somewhere) which I hoarded all my life and in my opinion left some form of "fear" of just being trapped in clutter. I started to take it seriously in 2019 when I discovered minimalism whilst watching the documentary on Netflix and something just clicked and everything now is so much better, I have a better diet, a clean fresh room, and I stopped buying fast fashion.

One thing that I do that helps me a lot is that I start small. Like if I decide to arrange or declutter, I start from one place and do it one at a time. That actually helps me a lot. It saves me from feeling overwhelmed at the sight of everything out at once.

Been following your channel since your cosy room video and since then I've used this video & your moving video as body doubling to help me clean and declutter! This past week I realized through a breakup that I have been holding onto way too much stuff all this time since even my childhood and have done a MASSIVE purge of almost half of my things, I'm almost close to the point where I feel 'empty' which is the goal so I start to feel comfortable with being uncomfortable which I also realized that I have been shoving my emotions down and away. Getting rid of clutter and practicing mindfulness is a total life changer for a positive impact on the future 💙 thank you Romy for being your beautiful self and sharing your life experiences!! Many blessings to you wherever your journey is going 😊🌻

That's amazing, so proud of you!! It's definitely not an easy journey but being on it is so rewarding ✨ but something i realized is that in my attempt to downsize as much as possible, i was too focused on the number of things and ended up decluttering too much. And in that sense, I wasn't very mindful.... (i have many things that i regret decluttering, and it also became an obsession back then 🥲). Ultimately, it's all about having what you need and valuing all your belongings 💕 Thank you for sharing your experience and your beautiful message. Good luck with your journey and take care! lots of love 🥰

@@teawithromy Yes, most definitely on not ridding myself of the important stuff, just clutter that served me no purpose. I still have quite a few more sentimental things to go through which at this point I'm taking my time with, I don't want to force myself to rid of the things that add value to me as a person. Just the things that were holding me down and burdening that I held onto for way too many years. Yesterday he officially ended things between us and it's made me feel kinda lost and restless but there's a lot to be learned and improved on moving forward, just gotta take those baby steps to become the best version of myself 💙

I also started minimalism, but mine was after moving so many times in the past year. I don't think ill ever be able to fit all of my stuff in my backpack, given I won't let go of this giant computer I have, but I am slowly getting rid of things little by little.

thanks for your comment! i'm the same, i don't think i'll ever be able to fit everything in a backpack either because of my hobbies, but i'd like to be okay traveling for a long time with only a few things (especially clothes...). letting go of things definitely takes time, especially when we have an emotional attachment to them... but if that computer brings you joy, you should keep it 😊

I started going minimal 2 years ago and at this point same will not be able to fit all things in a backpack. It does get easier to part with things, but never compare yourself to someone else-- different interest lifestyles, etc which is what minimal per individual makes it slightly different and being able to take something and carry on in my journey Im super grateful. Truth of less things equals more time and freedom in different areas so true and learning that to begin is the start and always room for growth change and learning wherever life takes you

Being a minimalist is about keeping items that serve you. There is no end goal. It looks different for different people, and even the same people at different stages of their lives. Being able to fit all your belongings into a backpack is great if you are travelling around the world. It's easier to move around freely and saves the cost of renting storage for your things. It's not so great if you love sports like biking, surfing and skiing or hobbies like gardening, sewing, and woodworking.
@teawithromy

yes i agree! hobbies actually make it impossible for me to fit everything in a backpack, but i'm hoping to at least fit all my clothes in there as I'd like to travel in the future. i do think there is an end goal though, for me it would be complete peace of mind and being satisfied with what i own. but you're right, it's different for everyone! thanks for sharing your thoughts 😊

I just stumbled onto your video a few months late lol. I really enjoyed your insight on materialism and self identification. I myself have been transitioning to minimalism for over 7 years now. After I learned the hard truth that stuff was a protective mechanism to defend myself from the unknown, I have been working to reduce what I own and consume responsibly. Living abroad has helped tremendously with realizing I don't need a lot of things to be happy, but rather I want to keep items in my life that serve me. Congrats on your quarantine declutter!

It helps me be more productive and keep things clean. I’m cooking a lot more and I’m enjoying life a lot more. I think deeply about the pieces of clothing I need to buy. I save money by not buying random things I won’t use, and my room brings me calmness. I hope to continue to get rid of even more because I don’t feel like I’m done quite yet. @@teawithromy Yeah! I think it has a similar teaching to gardening because decluttering is a continual process and takes patience. For me, tbh it all started when I got into the idea of Tiny Houses! I lived in a huge 5 bedroom house and I hated how cluttered it was and that it allowed people to accumulate things, so a small house sounded awesome! Nowhere for things to be forgotten about. My family was in the military so I've had experiences in several types of living and I reflected back to how I thought our house in japan (which was small) was the perfect size. Not too big or small for me, and it had everything we needed. Then I read Spark Joy by Marie Kondo and that was around my initial introduction to the term minimalism. After that I read Goodbye Things by Fumio Sasaki and I absolutely loved and was re-inspired by his book. So yeah, that was my journey leading up to and into minimalism 😅

I've been a minimalist about 3 years now and I just finished my freshman year of college so it took a whole new meaning for me as this is the first time I've moved in my entire life. i realized that I held onto some things because they weren't taking up space (decorations mostly) but they aren't worth moving back and forth between spaces. @@teawithromy at the moment being in between adult and kid it's difficult because I have some boxes of kitchen items that I'll be taking to my first apartment which make my room feel a bit crowded but I know I'll be needing the items in the future. it doesn't feel great storing things that I don't use right now but it makes no sense to get rid of them just to buy it all back. with the kitchen things I make sure that it's not an overwhelming amount and everything I have packed away I'll use. I've definitely hit a point where I'm not going through any huge purges but I just reassess my items as my needs change. I ran cross country and track in high school and my freshman year at college but decided I don't enjoy it anymore so I'll probably be purging some of my workout clothes now that I won't be running everyday! more or less I just try to take in items more intentionally so I don't have to get rid of as much and I'll reorganize my drawers from time to time and switch things between them and my suitcase :)

I’m really glad I found this video, and now I am aware of your channel! Like you, I have been thinking about becoming a minimalist for so long, and just two days ago I decided to start to clearing things from my apartment. I have never had much as far of possessions, but I have never deliberately thought about them and whether everything I had brought me value and joy. My longtime boyfriend and I had decided a few months ago that we are moving to another city that is 1600 miles away, it’s a financial decision first but we found we also want to use that time there as an opportunity to start over. Quarantine has given me an opportunity to really assess what is literally and mentally worth carrying, what energy I want to focus (and refocus) on for myself to feel fulfilled again. I began with my wardrobe, I cleared everything but 38 things, and all of them I feel I would wear every day if I could- only things left that make me feel like me. With everything else, I am finding other people in my circle who will love and use them more than I could. That closet is such a small corner of my life, but going through it represented a positive change and a step towards self care that I haven’t done for myself in a long time, it’s motivating me. I came into KZbin to find others who may have started the same thing and who feel similarly, thank you for this and I hope you are staying safe 🙏

Hi Kaitlyn! I love how you mentioned that you keep only the things that make you feel like you -- i think we have difficulty letting go of old possessions because we hold on to the past versions of ourselves. Our preferences/taste/personality are in constant movement, and it can be liberating to embrace that change, by letting go of the things that don't feel like us anymore. I'm so happy you've found joy & motivation in decluttering, it's hard at first but it's crazy how it can change us! Thank you for this beautiful comment ♥ stay safe!

I've been a minimalist for a long time yet still I learn things from videos like yours. Going in repeat waves helps me as it did you; the first time i stat thinking about whether to get rid of it, the second or third time I haven't missed it for six months so out it goes. I enjoy being intentional with what I have. The best thing is to think before you buy it, "Am I going to donate it in a year because I won't want it and it has no resale value?" and "If I don't buy it it's a 100% discount." and "If I save the money it will multiply." I've gone through many waves of paring down so I'm pretty certain I want to keep most of my stuff, but there are still things I haven't been able to get rid of yet don't have a good place for. The biggest problem is I get tired so I can only do a little at a time. So I focus on one thing at a time, like my shirts or one drawer. If you do one little thing, sometimes afterward you want to do a second and third, and you end up accomplishing more than you felt up to at the beginning. I've never tried dumping all my stuff out on the floor although I know some people do. It was interesting to see your reaction, "I never realized I had so much stuff." That makes me want to try it.

Hey Mike! I love your thinking behavior before buying something -- because of covid i haven't gone shopping in a while but i really really miss it and whenever i shop i forget my minimalist goal... thanks for sharing this because i'll definitely need it. I'm going through another decluttering wave these days but i'm really struggling, trying to do everything at once, but i'm going to try focusing on one thing, like you. I'm glad you learned something from my video, and thanks for your comment it really inspired me as well! have a great day :)

I did a slow decluttering, it took me almost 3 years, but I got almost 4000 dollars for all the things I sold, and because of that hard effort, I really dont want to buy new things because i know how much work it is to sell all those things...anyone can throw things out the window, but be really responsible and make a new home to your old stuff, takes time
