It's difficult to do, but something that helps me with Spanish constructions that appear to make no sense, like the one here, is to try to forget that I speak a language of any sort, and especially my mother tongue, English. in other words, as you say, it is what it is. Also, I'd just like to mention that your narrative or story approach in your last video (I think it was the last one you did) was great and something I'd be looking forward to if you decide to do another. I'd also be interested in following a conversation you might be having with someone in Spanish -- for example, with your wife. You could then go over some of the finer points of the conversation, discussing grammar, triggers, phrases, and so on. You do a terrific job, many thanks.

Honestly, as a native this doesn't 'break the rules' or 'appears to make no sense'. You can use both the indicative and the subjunctive with 'Estoy acostumbrado', of course depending on what you want to say. For instance: 'I'm used to my neighbour listening to very loud music'. You can say: 'Estoy acostumbrado a que mi vecino ponga la música muy alta'. Here, the action is still considered hypothetically, even if this is less clear than in constructions that visibly express a subjective position. The subjunctive may also have a hint of projecting the action into the future (which may be clear in 'Espero que vengas'). But It would also be correct, though quite less usual, to say 'Estoy acostumbrado a que mi vecino pone la música muy alta'. In the subjunctive, when the neighbour plays music' it can be loud or not, though it often is (often enough for you to get used to it happening.) In the indicative, you are stating matter-of-factly that this is what he does, when he plays music it IS very loud. You also have to view 'Estoy acostumbrado' in the context of other alternatives like 'Estoy resignado' o 'Estoy harto', which point more clearly to the subjunctive mood.

@@pedroteran5885 Excellent post. I was about to say something similar when I saw your post. Another way i would put it is that in the indicative example the main fact is that the music is loud. In the subjunctive example the main fact is that you have become accustomed to music being loud (from your neighbour's place). It may not be today but it has been before and probably will be again so you've had to get used to it.

It's funny Paul. I never knew this rule, but I think I would have said it the way you taught it anyway. I hope people can "get" this concept, but over time, you "get used to" (pun not intended) the way Spanish sentences are constructed, and in this case the subjunctive just "feels" like the obvious choice, though I couldn't tell you exactly why. I guess I'm going to get to totally "fluent" sooner rather than later. And of course, thanks for another GREAT lesson!

I think something that takes time to incorporate when we are learning spanish(or French) is the order of the pronoun and the verb. We are used to(acostumbrarse!!)saying, in English "I'll show you", but in spanish it's , "you I'll show" Te montaré.. You have to hear it spoken a lot , not just in print.

I think in this case also the use of the subjunctive makes sense from a rule perspective. The rule is that the subjunctive is used when the speaker is not in control of the action. For example in the last sentence, "I'm used to the neighbours making a lot of noise on Saturdays" - requires the subjunctive because the neighbours are doing the action which you can't control (making noise). If you said "I'm used to the noise of the neighbours" then there is no action out of your control, "estoy acostumbrado al ruido de los vecinos los sábados" no subjunctive (estoy acostumbrado a + noun). Here is another example: "Es hora de terminar la clase" (it's time to finish the class) is a very simple statement and no-one seems to be in control. Vs: "Es hora de que terminemos la clase" (it's time we finished the class) here we use the subjunctive because we need not only me, but all the students to finish the class, I am not in control of the group's actions. This is my interpretation of how the subjunctive works after looking at many examples. I hope native speakers (and Paul) can provide input on this understanding.

@@QrooSpanish I believe these two patterns are related to the other rule related to probability for the [probablemente que, posiblemente que, etc] triggers which can use indicative or subjunctive depending on your perceived probability of the event: Probablemente iremos a la fiesta (high probability) vs Probablemente vayamos a la fiesta (low probability). Using 'creo que' or 'lo bueno es que' you believe it to be 100% true, so it's indicative, whereas with no creo que' and 'dudo que' etc you believe it has low to zero probability, so subjunctive. Btw the original rule I mentioned also applies to [siempre que, cada vez que, cuando que] as in "every time (or whenever) you enter the house wipe your shoes please" we are asking/hoping/supposing the listener will wipe their shoes, but can't control it. I am trying to think of other subjunctive patterns which maybe don't follow the control and/or probability test.

Not a native speaker, but from what I see the subjunctive appears a lot when a subject change happens in the subordinate clause, so it just might be speakers following familiar patterns. Also, being accustomed or used to something can be read as somewhat irrealis ie "I slept in today, but I'm used to waking up early for a jog."

I think of the subjunctive as "the world of maybe." It's used for describing events or actions without specifying a time: maybe in the past, maybe today, maybe tomorrow, maybe ten years from now, maybe every day, maybe never. By that definition, the "acostumbrado" usage makes perfect sense to me.

I think don't think this construction is breaking any rules. Subjunctive is the mood of "non-reality" (as painted by the discourse, whether it corresponds to actual reality is irrelevant). "Estoy acostumbrado a que mis padres vengan cada fin the semana" is not something that's real in the discourse. It may or may not happen for any specific weekend, but I'm used to it happening. A verb that requires the indicative, like "Sé que mis padres van a venir este fin de semana" paints it as there being no question. So subjunctive is really the expected mood here. And I'm not trying to overthink it, this is what we were taught in my school in Spain. Also, great work on your videos! I really enjoy seeing how you reason about the language.

well, you got the "que" in there that leads into a change of subject, so it kind of makes sense. "estoy acostumbrado a ir a Francia en junio" has no "que" and change of subject, and sounds right, but changing the subject and dropping the "que" in kind of does sound right too, like a subjunctive trigger, at least to me.

Hey Paul, another fabuloso video, even if it does mention the Spanish subjunctive! Sorry for the lengthy comment ... I just revisited the gerund video and am confused when English uses the gerund but Spanish does not. This video has a lot of those types of occurrences and Bing chat was pretty much useless in helping me out. I have seen estar + infinitive equate to the English gerund, but now I see: estar + something {= acostumbrado a} + que + present subjunctive equate to the English gerund. I would translate: "Estoy acustombrado a que llueva todos los días" as "I am used to (to what? … the fact) that it rains every day" and "Estoy acustombrado a que mis perrors me depiertan a las cinco de la mañana" as "I am used to (to what?) that my dogs awake me up at 5am" Am I wrong in my thinking and I should just "go with the flow" and think English gerund instead? Never knew pronominal verbs were a thing until I got hooked on your channel, I believe there are six types (had to find out what they are, but I made up reasons that make sense to me, please correct me if I am wrong), also not sure if you covered all these in a different video but thought others might think this is helpful: Reflexive (subject does the action to oneself) Pure (These verbs will always end with “SE”) Reciprocal (These verbs are actions done to each other) Pseudo-reflexive (Like reflexive but more “gangster” style as the actions are feelings) Dative of interest … I ask myself, do I really need to know this one? (person doing the action is affected by it) Meaning-Changing (with “SE” suffix means “to get” or “we got” {action, perhaps past tense} like “bored” or “lost”, without “SE” suffix seems more like present tense like “to bore”, “to lose”) Bing chat had a great explanation for the Dative of Interest: For example, if you say “Me lavo las manos” (I wash my hands), you’re using a pronominal verb. But if you say “Me lavo las manos para no enfermarme” (I wash my hands so I don’t get sick), you’re using a pronominal verb with a dative of interest.” Where were you years ago when the whole MA / PA / TA thing threw me for a loop?? Hopefully, I am wording this correctly, but to me, it feels like the subjunctive conjugation is continually triggered in the subordinate/dependent clause. "I am accustomed" is a complete sentence, therefore, it is an independent clause. "The birds singing every morning" is not a complete sentence, therefore, it is a dependent clause, it is dependent on the independent clause for the sentence to make sense. To say "the birds sing every morning" sounds like a fact, it is something they are doing indicating a fact of reality, therefore, it would be conjugated into the indicative mood. "I am used to the birds singing every morning" begins in the indicative mood because it states a fact of reality (you are accustomed to something) but then the predicate that follows is dependent on the beginning of the sentence (independent clause) to make sense. The sentence is not saying "the birds sing every morning" as a direct observation of reality, but rather a concept that exists in your head. It may also exist in reality but "being used to something" is not a tangible thing like "birds singing" is.

Q you make a point that is very important that I try to convey to someone I am helping with spanish. Sometimes there is no rhyme, reason or rule, just accept it. To be accustomed to anything in no way instinctively triggers a subjunctive thought. But there IS rhyme and reason as to why the subjunctive is used here. It's not just random. Paul's point is not that "there's no rhyme or reason"; his point is that the reasoning isn't obvious and it's not worth worrying about or getting into or wasting time on. The reasons are complex and subtle. It's a much better use of your time to learn the triggers rather than to learn the labyrinthine reasonings for subjunctive apllication. Because the latter won't help you much in future while you are inventing sentences on the fly during conversation/composition.

You just have to memorize the verbs as you go. estoy acostumbrado a que ella coma conmigo. I am used to her eating with me, is correct. comer to eat, is subjunctive. It is subjunctive because the spanish rule says it. One cannot make up their own rules.

There are two forms of that main verb; alegrarse de que + subjunctive, alegrar que + subunctive. The second is like "It makes me happy that...." Me alegro de que estés aquí. Me alegra que estés aquí. These both mean "I'm happy you are here". This is an emotional reaction to something so the thing we are happy about is in the subjunctive mood.

If you say "Ten buen día" (literally 'have a good day') it's in the imperative, so it indicates an order or demand rather than a desire or wish. But it's also a bit more than that. If your partner said "Que limpies la casa"... it would perhaps have different connotations such as expectation, anticipation even frustration... "it better get done today or we'rehaving a chat later" kind of stuff

Do you mean why isn't there a personal a? If so, the reason is that the personal a only appears before the object of the clause, not the subject. In Spanish, this is really two clauses separated by QUE. Espero -I hope, and "that you go...." The subject of the second clause is "you". We know this because the verb "vayas". The subject controls the verb. I can understand how this would seem odd because in English we say I want you to do something.

I can say that "to be used to something" states the emotional state that triggers the subjunctive. However, each language has its own rules. In French, the verb, "esperer" (to hope) DOESN'T trigger the subjunctive. In Italian, "so che" (I know that) triggers the subjunctive. I'm biased, but I think that the Spanish rules make the most sense!

You're wrong. Rules don't have to make sense. This is not math. A language is what it is and that's it. Some rules do not apply to all cases, but that doesn't mean they do not make sense. It's just that rules are not universal when it comes to language. Subjunctive makes sense in all languages, but in a different way in each language.

When I'm began to learn English I saw this construction I another place than my English class so I get very confused about it : why did that person say "I'm used to that"? In Spanish that would be translated to " Estoy usado + something" obviously that was before KZbin (92) and everything needs to be seek on dictionaries. That was shocking at first but I got used to that.

I would think it’s safe to say it triggers the subjunctive because of the uncertainty. You can be used to something, but you still don’t know with certainty that it is going to be that way the next time it happens. What do you think? Just playing the “overthinking it” devils advocate 😂

@@QrooSpanish At least a little, I would say. If I tell you I'm used to something happening, I'm essentially saying that it's highly likely to happen, but I am not sure with 100% certainty that it will.

This is exactly what I thought as well. The uncertainty comes from not knowing for sure if the person will do what I'm accustomed to them doing. I have a friend who is almost always late, but every once in a while, she'll show up on time. Hence, the uncertainty.

Ok, sorry, I have to try to over think it. In the examples of the birds singing, the boss ignoring and the brother being late, it could be that acostumbrado with subjunctive conveys the sense of being resolved about something. I do not like it, but I accept it as the way it is. Birds gonna sing, he is always going to be my brother, and the boss is a jerk but the commute is short an the pay is good. That sort of resignation would be an emotional state. I can imagine somebody using the subjunctive in these cases, while making a toss away gesture with the hand.

Why do you say "Estoy acostumbrada" and not "soy acostumbrada"?

You always use 'estar' when you speak about being in a state, a condition, a situation: Estoy entusiasmado. Estoy enfermo. Estoy con hambre. Estoy arrepentido. Estoy acostumbrado. Estoy entrenado. Estoy envenenado. When you use 'ser' in some of these cases (when the verb admits an indirect object, such as: acostrumbrar 'a alguien') you are using the passive voice and the meaning changes. If you say: Fue acostumbrado a madrugar ( Lo acostumbraron a madrugar), that means "he was trained to get up early". Es entrenado a obedecer. (Passive voice, he is trained to obey) Está entrenado a obedecer (That means he was trained to obey before and is now in that state)

Instead of ALL those mental contortions, why don't you just forget all those rules and just IMITATE what you HEAR from NATIVE SPEAKERS? That's what I did and I have passing for a native speaker for FORTY YEARS.

If you have 40 years to do it, sure. There is a faster way for novices. Simple formulas to speak correctly. And, they don't have to do the "mental contortions" every time. Usually only once or twice and tjen it comes out quickly. It's like seeing a math problem you already know the answer to. People who learn 100% through listening can only repeat what they have heard many, many times before. What a slow, laborious way to learn as an adult. With this other method, you can create grammatically correct sentences you may never have heard or seen before.
