Thanks for explaining the PPF alignment process and including torque specs! Really helpful, I just installed a 6spd trans in an NA6 and was surprised how much adjustment there is.

Hi there, just thought I would post my experience of this. My son and I just replaced the clutch in his MX5 NB8B. We set the PPF height at 72mm when we set it all up. On the first test drive we had a noticeable whine in lower gears (quite loud in 1st gear and 2nd gear) on deceleration. We popped it up on jacks (AGAIN) and adjusted it to 66mm. Went for a test drive after and all good again. So we can conclude that misaligned PPF WILL cause a whine on deceleration particularly in lower gears, however. Adjust it right and the sound will go away - presumably if you don't drive it a lot when it is whining. Hope this might help some searching for this issue.

Yep and in hindsight we wished that the manual had told us to measure the PPF height BEFORE disassembling because given it is sensitive and they provide a range it might be easier particularly with an old car to put it back where we found it ;-).

Thanks for the video. If you had to move the gearbox tail end up or down to get it within the spec measurement, how would you do that? Do you only need to loosen the PPF bolts on the transmission end, then jack up or down the transmission to the proper height, and re-tighten the bolts? I need to adjust the PPF in my NC Miata with 6MT to get within the spec range (I need to make the gap larger) and am wondering how best to go about this.

yep thats exactly how you do it, either jack it up more or lower it down until you get it in tolerance. just remember when you take the jack out it will move a bit

Do you have to do the gearbox alignment on an NA mx5, surly when all the bolts holding it to the engine are tight it aligns itself?

yep mk1 and mk2 both require the same alignment method. you would like to think so, but yes it is adjustable

Hi, not the outter but inner shaft where it meets up with the transmission. Do you grease the inner propeller shaft where it gets inserted ???

all done by myself, degreaser , wire brush , pressure washer and good layer of hammeright

if the measurement is too big then jack up the tail end of the gear box with a jack, if its too great loosen off the diff and trans bolts and pull the tail end of the gear box down. tighten up all the bolts and measure again

How do you move the gearbox tail end up and down ? I don't see in the video where you make this adjustment . Do you add spacers somewhere ? If you did show where you adjust the gearbox tail will you give me the time stamp in a replay ? Thanks . From the way it seems to work is the transmission is connected to the engine and the ppf is connected to the transmission and nothing between the front and back is connected to the body . So if you want to raise up the ppf the front of the engine would have to be lowered and the rear of the engine raised i order for the gear box to be raised up . How is this being done ?

good question, if you put a jack on the tail end of the gear box and raise it up yes the nose of the engine will lower ever so slightly but its not noticeable, you will see when you are raising it that the two bolts that attach the ppf to the gear box will move. once the correct height has been reached do the two bolts up. no spacers or additional equipment is required

@@Project380 Just so I'm clear what you are saying is to loosen the 2 bolts you are showing and installing at 5:55 in the video . Once they are loosened up put a jack stand under the transmission end and raise or lower it to bet the spacing in spec and then tighten up the 2 bolts right ? Is there something that has to be slid back or forth that is on the top of the ppf so that the space doesn't change ? Is this the piece that allows the ppf to stay in the place you tighten it up to ? Its the only thing I can see that would make it be able to make a change in the angle of the ppf .

from my understanding aligning the PPF may not help you but it definitely wont hurt to check the alignment. it may be a fluid or gear issue

Hi there, after a recent clutch change in my 91 i have a lashing sound happening on deexcelleration mainly in 3rd and 4th any idea and could it have something to do with the PPF? cheers from New Zealand

hi there, this is probably not PPF related, I'm gonna have a guess and say yours is a 1.6? I would start of by changing the gearbox oil, then I would check the clutch slave cylinder and the hydraulic line for leaks, I would then flush and bleed the clutch hydraulics, then hopefully this will solve the issue if not make it a bit better

@@danielthomas8507 Any luck? I have the same issue but in a 1.8 eunos. Going to give the PPF alignment a go and I'll let you know if it helped. Mines super loud when warmed up like yours its when engine braking at like sub 4K RPM ranges. Sounds like a washing machine full of pebbles almost haha. Changed diff oil and it didn't help.

@@RoxusRemo hi there haven't had a chance to do it yet busy at work and shit .Yeah same sound as yours ,I changed the gearbox out cos the mech that fitted the clutch said it was the problem and still the sound remains really pissed about that ,I don't think it's an oil issue myself but will give it a go soon, I think it could be a a faulty throw out bearing ? Or maybe the ppf? But either way it really is annoying, I have learnt to drive around it for now ,so yeah let me know how you go mate,good luck and cheers 🍻

@@danielthomas8507 my cars too low and its a pain to get under managed to squeeze and found the ppf is about 60mm from the trans so i think this is within spec. Still need to do gearbox oil but it looks like a right pain!

I have a 90's miata mx5 manual 1.6l and it's making reeee type of noise and the camshaft is bit lose could that be the issue and it's shutting off the car in 2nd 3rd.?.
