Nondetergent straight 40wt or 50wt engine oil or any 80w90 gear oil that says it is yellow metal safe on the bottle, sometimesinstead of yellow metal it'll say protects copper and bronze bushings. When I made this video almost no manufacturer bothered to say if their product was yellow metal safe but have started to do that more now. A lot of people will recommend GL-1 or GL-4 over GL-5 for the best yellow metal protection but I'm not sure if that's still relevant today.

Great time for a drain plug magnet. Also Might have been a good to mention to drive it around before you drain it, the particles will mostly be suspended in the fluid. As well it's a great idea to run about half a quart of clean oil out of the unit with the plug off, as most of the stuff you want out is heavy and gos to the bottom thus a good way to flush them out. (Pennzoil 2 years) Great videos!

The military used GL5 but if you read the specs on GL5 regardless of it being yellow metal safe, it is not made for synchronized transmissions. The military also used motor in its 900 series trucks for its Allison transmission rather than Dextron3, it caused the transmissions to shift harshly and downshift horribly. Just a thought for those looking to change fluids. I use GL1 in the tranny and transfer case for better gear oil properties than 30, 40, or 50 wt oil. It is safe to use GL1 and is safe to use In synchronized transmissions. GL5 can be used in the Rockwell axles though. GL5 works great there because of the high pressures.

@deuceandguns10 жыл бұрын
Bo Rhoden Not only is there a way but it's a pretty good idea. I have extended family who are big dairy farmers and when they lose power they have generators that run off the tractor's PTO and it's enough power to keep the milking machines running. It wouldn't be that hard to attach a PTO shaft onto the transfer case and run a large PTO generator off that. They are not cheap but some of the bigger ones that require over 40 hp can put out some good power numbers and would be enough to run an entire house when the power is used conservatively. Great question!

So theoretically speaking... you could just toss that oil through a 5 micron filter and dump it in the feel tank?

Yep. You'd have to take the viscosity into consideration so the pumps aren't over stressed but an easy work around is to simply cut it 1:1 with diesel and you're golden. @deuceandguns10 жыл бұрын
To the best of my knowledge you can drive a M35A2 with a regular Class D non-commercial license in all states due to it being under 26,000lbs GVWR except for California. In the state of CA you'll need a Class B due to having 3 axles so if you bob the Deuce you'll be fine in CA with a class D. I'm also not sure how strict CA is with this but it's on their DMV website. Regarding the MPG for the Deuce. A stock Deuce will get 10ish MPG if it's running on diesel and the speed is kept at and under 45MPH. If you bump up the speed to the high end of the safe zone (50-52 MPH) you'll drop the MPG to about 5. Thanks for watching!

There are bobbed deuces where the rear axle is removed making it a 4x4. I've heard that's good for about 3mpg. I also know a dude who removed the front drive shaft so the engine doesn't have to spin the front end and that was also good for a few mpg.
@MrJlhhagood210 жыл бұрын
***** yeah i know about bobbed and the front i mean with out the bob. But a gain of three is probably more just the weight removed.
@deuceandguns10 жыл бұрын
So just removing the drive shaft between the second and third axle? I've personally never heard of that but it'd probably do some good as long as the extra traction wasn't needed. If it were simply a hwy hauler then you'd probably get an extra 3 mpg or more by removing the drive to the front and third axle and only driving the second axle.

It’s been over 4 yrs now since the video. Have there been any transmission problems? And about how many miles would you say you have on ‘er since the fluid change? Reason for my questions are because I just purchased a deuce and all the research of what type of oil to use is killin’ me! GL1, GL5, 80w90, 50wt engine oil..... driving me crazy! Since you have time and miles on yours, I’d like to know how things are going. Thanks!
@deuceandguns6 жыл бұрын
I don't put a ton of road miles on mine but it's been fine. If you dive too deep down the rabbit hole on this oil thing it will make your head spin but there is a lot of overlap when it comes to these lubes. 30wt straight non-detergent works for me but I've been told it can cause shifting issues in hot weather after lots of hwy driving. Any of those you listed above will work as long as it's safe for the yellow metal in the transmission (GL5, 80w90 may be an issue) and some will shift better than others. For better summer driving and protection I've been thinking about changing to 40wt straight non-detergent but due to having newer trucks at my disposal I rarely drive it that much when it's hot out.

Great video! I always find time out of my day to watch your videos especially the deuce ones. I remember you changing the oil in the engine of the deuce and I thought to myself the transmission has got to be close to 10 gallons of not more. I'm very surprised it's only a couple gallons. Why would the manufacture use 30 weight oil instead of gear oil? I thought they put gear oil in manual transmissions. Maybe I was wrong. I don't know. It's not an automatic so they wouldn't put automatic transmission fluid in it. Did you change the dif fluid also?
@deuceandguns10 жыл бұрын
Most manual transmissions are perfectly happy with some sort of straight motor oil depending on how they were designed. Other than the engine and trans oil nothing else has been changed on the truck. Aussie Bloke! to change diff fluid, just remove the cover off the diff and drain. when done, just fill the diff with proper fluid and you'll know its full when excess fluid starts dripping out. to change transfer case fluid is similar to when changing diff fluid. And remember, this is important, if you have a limited slip diff, make sure you add a limited slip additive.
@deuceandguns10 жыл бұрын
Peter Kapica That Diff change technique will work for 90% of the diffs out there but not for the Deuce. The Diffs and the transfer case on the M35s have a drain plugs that must be used. Also, their internals on the diffs are only accessible from the top after removing the drive shafts due to them being top loaders. The M35s don't have stock limited slip but yes always take care of you limited slip diff by using the correct fluid and never use a mini spare on the rear because both will result in burning out the clutches. Thanks for watching.
@battnotincld7 жыл бұрын
Still learning here sorry if this question is a little minor. But the switch you move from right to left before you let the clutch out. What is that for? I have a 73' M52A2 and don't have that switch. Thank you in advance.
@deuceandguns7 жыл бұрын
If you're talking about the switch I flip at about 6:00 then that's the front wheel drive lever which uses air pressure to engage the front wheel drive. Early models had an automatic sprag gear that engaged the front when the rears slipped but due to some issues with the sprag system later models were manually switched on and off.

DEUCE AND GUNS Thank you! I kinda figured that's what it would be but wanted to ask haha

Just noticed something after watching this vid about 100 times,..... You said they used GL1 and then GL5 (improved) in the gearbox,, diffs and transfer case, I can understand that they would need to use as few different consumables as possible and why. So since a 30-50W non detergent oil was meant to be used in the spicer gearbox, dose that also mean you can use that same oil in the transfer case and diffs as well? Aussie.
@deuceandguns10 жыл бұрын
I've been told that 30-50W can be used in the transfer case but I've also heard that 80w90 gear oil is best so I'm still researching before I change it and make a video. The diffs will need something better suited to the pressure so regular diff oil (80w90) but I'm still researching exactly what's best before putting it on video.

Interesting that you're in PA because that's where I ended up buying mine and driving it back down to Tennessee. That trip was over 600 miles in a new to me truck! Try extending your search out and cruising the classifieds on EBAY and steelsoldiers. Unfortunately, the super cheap deuces from government auctions have all but dried up so the surplus that was there has shrunk. I bought my Deuce when there were still occasional internet posts like this, "Guys, I stupidly put $500 on a deuce at the gov auction and actually won the thing! What do I do?" Everyone around me is at $7k right now for examples ranging from rusted out to $13k for near fully restored. Good luck

That's what I was afraid you were going to say. That's AK's there use to be dirt cheap when I bought mine and even more so a few years before that, now there hard to find for under $800. It looks like the 5 ton is the new Deuce but unfortunately in PA I'd need to get a CDL to drive it. Maybe I'll just save up until I move back to MI where you can drive personal trucks without a CDL and buy a 5 ton. They do have a cummins which I'm much more familiar with. Thank for the info and keep make cool videos!

DEUCE AND GUNS I picked my 1970 deuce in chambersberg Pa last April My 5th gear is growling /tumbling rock sounds after a parade any ideas why ?
@BearCat4598 жыл бұрын

@deuceandguns8 жыл бұрын
First and reverse are not synced but second though fifth are. I have a shifting gears video in the playlist.

Where did you buy that funnel or did you make it?

Probably tractor supply

Walmart has these

Howcome the transmission is so tiny like y not replace it with a better one that's well bigger allowing it to to hopefully go faster and u would probably have to change the driveshaft as well because well it's a tiny transmission

Hey BC, is it okay to power shift 1st gear? (shift into 2nd without letting off the gas pushing the clutch in just to the friction point then shift into the gear and let off the clutch) I know it's possible in manual transmission cars to reduce shift time and also done it to my atv.
@deuceandguns9 жыл бұрын
Will a Deuce take a shift like this? Probably. Will this cause accelerated wear and possibly break something? Yes. If you're concerned about shifting quickly don't buy a Deuce. If you're concerned about vehicle speed don't buy a Deuce. Like any vehicle that you plan on keeping for a long time if you drive it like you stole it then you'll eventually wish someone does steal it or plan on putting a ton of money into repairs.
@funnypranker349 жыл бұрын
Well driving it like I stole it does help clear up any fuel system clogs. Amd also when is the next video gonna be?
@deuceandguns9 жыл бұрын
Sometime in October.
@willrice15788 жыл бұрын
wouldn't it be easier to just remove the shifter and pour it in from up top?

well I should watch the rest of the video first lol

Can you run this oil as fuel ?
@deuceandguns4 жыл бұрын
Once it's filtered it can be added to the regular Diesel. Technically, it can run on straight trans oil or motor oil but it's very hard on the pumps due to being thicker than diesel.

Just out of curiosity where do you guys find these in fixable condition like this truck here for around 3-4K or less? I always hear of people buying them cheap but never find them :(
@deuceandguns7 жыл бұрын
Those who claim the super cheap prices are either talking about when they were at the GOV auctions for $1,000 but they're all gone from there now, finding an owner who needs quick cash, or they're stretching the truth a bit. I typically see them close to or over the $10k mark now for ready to roll condition but that will vary greatly due to location.

DEUCE AND GUNS great... :( here goes my chances of ever owning one...
@deuceandguns7 жыл бұрын
The 5-tons are still at auctions I think so you'd have a better chance of finding one of those super cheap and there's always craigslist.

DEUCE AND GUNS I mean it’s not like I’m trying to be cheap, but I just don’t see spending 10 grand on a “fun” run around vehicle, even if it’s a bit old or abused is fine, I operate and maintain equipment for a living so the general knowledge and understanding is there for these trucks.

do you have 900x20's or 1100x20's?
@deuceandguns10 жыл бұрын
9x20 for the deuce and a half. The 11x20s were stock on the 5-ton.
@christophervayo353010 жыл бұрын
Well 11-20s were originally stock on the deuce then the government went down to 9-20s to make loading and unloading
@deuceandguns10 жыл бұрын
Interesting. I've never heard that but I've never claimed to be a deuce historian either. All my knowledge is from the TMs and how they were most recently configured by the government.
@christophervayo353010 жыл бұрын
yeah they just did that to drop the bed height my friend is putting 11-20s on his just for looks we do Vietnam reenacting so my friend got that and it was originally painted like yours but he painted the whole thing with olive drab raddle cans from home depot lol and we have an m105 trailer that we are also putting 11-20s on when we do ill have to send you some pictures

How often should the transmission oil in a Deuce be changed in reality? Not just every 13 years, right?
@aussiebloke299810 жыл бұрын
I notice you didn't use any gas tape on the plug threads to seal against any leaks? Aussie.
@deuceandguns10 жыл бұрын
Aussie, that was not intentional on my part. I'm so used to working on modern vehicles with sealing washers on the drain plugs that it totally slipped my mind that a sealant may be needed for this. It really only occurred to me while editing this video but I've put roughly 3 hours on the truck after this change and not seen any drips yet...but time will tell. I will say that there was no sign of any sealant on the plug when I removed it and no mention of it in the technical manuals talking about the trans fluid change so I may be OK.
@Joseywales4145 жыл бұрын
Is gas tape something like Teflon tape ??
@SteveSmith-we8gs10 жыл бұрын
Do not use gl5 in a duece. GL5 contains high pressure additives that are no good for the yellow metal components in your trans and diffs. Your trans looks like it was replaced or rebuilt. The oil could be cruddy because no one changed it after the break in period.

Do you or does anyone know if your low air pressure switch leaks air through a hole on the right side of it? The low air pressure switch is mounted to the firewall above the steering shaft. If you follow the wire that plugs into the buzzer it will connect into the low air pressure switch that I am speaking of. I'm wondering if yours has a plug in the hole to prevent air from coming out of it or if there's a hole in yours and there's possibly a diaphragm that blocks the hole from inside the switch or something to that effect that broke on mine. If there is a screw or plug in that small hole on the right side of the low air pressure switch then that would tell me I can plug mine. I don't want to have to replace the switch if I don't need to. Thanks!

+Tyson Capel I've never looked that closely so I can't comment at the moment. I keep my deuce on the farm and due to my recent surgery (lasik) I've got doctors orders to not go to the farm or any dusty environments for a few weeks. Once I'm given the OK to have fun again I'll be sure to check and report back.
