My friend has 2010 RAV4 AWD model and manual says 8.6 quarts for ATF WS. Do you need that many quarts for drain and fill or much less?
@johnnyhotrod
@johnnyhotrod 3 жыл бұрын
@@Charkatak less You’ll never get all the fluid out on the drain,there is still a good amount in the torque converter. The best way is to drain into a measuring container(Walmart has tall multi quart clear containers)and replace with the same amount of fresh fluid. Remember,if you change fluid while hot let it sit for a few hours-hot fluid expands and you may mistakenly overfill. If using this method and you want a complete fluid change,you would drain and fill then drive for 15-20 minutes,then repeat process. It could take four times to get all the old fluid out.

I just did this a little differently so maybe this will make the job easier...that plastic cover is a real pain and when you look close the only thing that it covers up is the transmission drain plug. I took out my dremel, cut a small opening below the drain plug and it was easy cheesy! Saved a lot of time and hassle and while I was at it I did the front transfer case and rear differential. Hope this helps!

The guy in the video used a drill to remove the pan bolts. There is a risk you can break the pan bolts depending how much rust there is. Safer to take it out with a 1/4 drive ratchet and install back with a nut driver. It is slower but safer since it is hard to over torque with a nut driver. The pan bolts have very fine threads and does not take much to snap them if you go over board. Also blue locktite should be used on the pan bolts so it does not vibrate loose. A drain and fill only gets less than half the fluid out since the other half is stuck in the torque converter. A flush using the return line will get all the fluid out and gives the best result.

I am amazed when you go to the trouble of servicing the filter that people do not flush the torque converter. One of the reasons I do not have dealer or "tire shop" do the work. BTW Rav4 4.3 series is 3.9 in the case 8.6 in the system for the fluids. Liked the quick edits for brevity. Explaining the total flush and function of the fluid circulation would make it even better.
@wilson713
@wilson713 10 жыл бұрын
The factory repair manual doesn't give a procedure for servicing the transmission. Not even fluid capacity specs. Most of the time, if it has a black dipstick, they don't think it ever needs to be serviced.

Vehicle was not reversing because the clutches in the transmission were burnt out the clutches were changed and the transmission was placed back in the vehicle. Now the car wouldn't go in to any gears but reverse! A diagnosis test was done on the car which stated there was a Manuel problem and not an electrical one! What can be possible manuel causes that would stop the transmission from going into other gears besides reverse?

Toyota Rav 4 has a total capacity of 12 quarts in the transmission, not 3 or 4. The torque converter isn't emptied when you drop the pan or drain it, it needs to be flushed. So with the video above you're putting 3 quarts of good in with 8-9 quarts of old/used.
@johnh7058
@johnh7058 7 жыл бұрын
8.6 quarts for the 4 speed or 9.3 for a 5 speed. That still leaves 5 qts dirty fluid most of which can be removed with a drain and refill without dropping the pan the 2nd time around.
@philipzelechoski9306
@philipzelechoski9306 6 жыл бұрын
One qt at a time via the return hose keeps 3 qts minimum in the pan. Very much easier with two people, but can accomplish solo. Using a one gallon milk or ice tea jug is easy to mark off the volumes.

How about pour from the catch container into a measuring cup or gallon pitcher? And that's only a starting point. How do you know if the tranny was up to the full mark before you did the job and not down a quart? Run the car until warm, check the dipstick and see where it's at before doing this job. After replacing the fluid with the amount you took out warm the car, then check level and add if necessary.

@@atxjax1 hi, you seems knowledgeable, and I have a question, if you don’t mind. I am Currently working on my Sister in law’s 2011 RAV4. When the car is cold (1st thing in the morning), the ATF is between Cool and Hot. But after I drive it around, the level would be just above Cool…? Is this normal on this gen’s Rav4? According to the website you posted above, i have to top up fluid when the ATF is up to operating temperature. So does that mean when the car is cold, is fluid level would actually be above the Hot mark? Thanks!
@atxjax1
@atxjax1 3 жыл бұрын
@@nickolastiguan The correct way to check the transmission fluid (ATF) level, is this: After driving the vehicle enough to get the transmission fully warm (probably at least 15-20 minutes of around town driving with stopping and starting), park on a level surface. With your foot on the brake, slowly move the gear selector through every position. P R N D 2 L, and then back to park. Keep it in each position for at least a full second or two. With the engine running pull the dipstick, wipe it off, re-insert it and then get your reading. It should be right at the hot mark, or maybe slightly under, but not much.

Louie Morales Toyota RAV4 that has BLACK dipstick should be replaced 100k at first service but next service should be every 50k. It depends how to maintain your transmission and also depends on the year of the vehicle of Toyota Rav4. Toyota RAV4 that has red or orange dipstick should replaced every 30k.

About half. The rest is in the torque converter. If you really want to do it fully, drain it only and replace what drains. Drive a few hundred miles. Then, drain it again and change the filter just like he did here. That will get most of the old fluid out.
