I’m joining the party 2 years later but I’m in the process of buying a boat. This gave me and immense peace of mind that I’m not SOL if the boat I buy needs the transom replaced down the road. Great job on the video, it was extremely helpful!

Found a boat for sale. Beautiful and big enough for a family. Rotten transom. Just swiped by until I decided to Google how hard it was to replace. This was the first videos and you guys did great. Very detailed and slow enough for me. I am gonna go look and see if my boy and I can tackle it and save some cash. Thanks.

Thank you for doing these videos. I really appreciate you showing the mistakes that others never do. I will be taking this over the winter here in Canada in my garage. Fingers crossed it all goes well. Not sure I will use coosa board as I just looked at the price and it is $900 cad a sheet here. So I think I will be using marine plywood instead. Thanks again. Great work.

That looks pretty good to me. I was given an old 1960's Starcraft 18 foot fiberglass with a 90 Merc for free and need to do this soon. Thanks for taking the time to show the process. I finally got all the screws for my cap drilled out and I cut a huge chunk of floor out to inspect the ribs. I only noticed 2 cracks on the top of ribs and they are still solid.

@@PastoralHomesteadOutdoors It has been a love/hate relationship but the boat is worth fixing. I don't see a lot of 18 footers out there. Ordering parts for an obsolete Mercury has been a problem, but I am sorting it out slowly.

The motor is sorted out, The boat is half done, the price of wood made me put it on hold. I filled in the extra holes in the dash and sanded it down. drilling the screws out that hold the top on was very time consuming. The top cap is ready to come off. I cut a huge chunk of floor out and the plywood is rotted, The ribs appear to be solid. I am at the point where Im not sure if its worth sinking money into when I can find another solid hull for the same money it would take to finish this one. I might just scrap the boat and sell the trailer and motor and pick up something that needs less work.
@berniemac8413
@berniemac8413 2 жыл бұрын
@@davidbrennan5 Oh wow sounds like a lot of work and not great news. Your idea of scrapping it and getting something else might be better.. of the work you’ve done , what’s been the most expensive to accomplish? Oh and I confused your StarCraft with Seacraft. I believe the one I’m looking at has more fiberglass than your StarCraft. the hull, stringers, the deck and everything else is made out of fiberglass. The only thing made out of wood is the transom and hatches. But all the glass on the upper deck is cracked.. looks like spiderwebs. The hull from the sides seems a bit weak (it caves in a bit when you push on it). And it will need a new transom built.. the motor it comes with is an older evinrude 100hp built in the 70’s and I’m not sure if it runs.. not sure if I should pull the trigger on it.. how difficult is it to find parts for older motors?

What are your thoughts on just using poly resin I've heard as long as you do all the prep correctly it will hold up.Most boat mfg's used poly resin in the factory.

have you heard of transom repair using sea cast? need to repair my transom on my 87 skeeter but i need to know the best option
@PastoralHomesteadOutdoors
@PastoralHomesteadOutdoors 4 жыл бұрын
We looked into Seacast, but it has some drawbacks, primarily the inability to remove all of the old transom material. It's a viable option, but we chose to cut all of it out and replace. I believe the total cut out is the best option if you're not overly concerned about the final fished look on the outside. If you are not wanted to re-gel coat or paint, seacast might be the better bet.

Holy Cow!! I bet that was exciting in all the wrong ways!! I'm happy the video series could help, I no longer have a complete list of products, but you can probably piece it together from the videos. Off the top of my head, you'll need: Resin (or epoxy), silica, coosa board or marine plywood, an multi oscillating tool, a sander (belt and round), skill saw, 3M marine silicone, nitrile gloves, plastic containers (to mix resin in), fiberglass mat and chopped, brushes, plastic putty knives, tarp to put under the project if you're going to be on concrete. That's all I can come up with off the top of my head, if you have any questions feel free to email me: reecewatson27@gmail.com I'll happily help if I can!

Yes we could have…but the cost of the thicker Coosa board got out of control once you got past 1 in thick. We used 3/4 in and doubled it. It worked perfect for this project. Probably saved $300 by doing it that way. Might have been better using one piece, but this worked best for us at the time.
