Even the conventional scientific understanding through neuroscience is that perception is a result of the brain processing the input of light and presenting an internal image to us. We do not see the world. We see an internal representation of the world, this imagery is produced from a slither of the reality that is there. Even conventional science knows what we sense through the 5 senses is a tiny slither of all the data that is there. That is the standard scientific view, which alone is mind blowing. It seems to me, the non dual teaching is just a step further.

Well, I suppose the belief in the objects is real (if you believe they exist as independent objects made of matter) but the only thing that is really real is the experience, or the awareness of the experience. The objects do exist in a sense, as a play of light, but not as what they actually are, so the objects are an illusion. But we’re saying the same thing basically.

Hello Alan.... Q.... Rupert says over and over that “awareness is ESSENTIALLY what we are”. Intellectually, I understand that the manifested world including body and mind is an appearance only (within or as awareness). Rather than saying that awareness IS what we are, he uses ESSENTIALLY. Why? Essentially seems to imply an incompleteness. Bread is essentially flour and water. But it is more than that, it has salt and yeast as well. Rupert ALWAYS says “essentially”. Why? (Please) What is he really saying? If we ARE Awareness, why not say so instead of “essentially”? Thank you.

You are essentially awareness or knowing but from knowing arises an apparent display which can't be separated from that knowing. We could describe the display as emptiness dancing. Dualistic language can't get to the Truth of who or what we are. Knowingknown written as one word is about the best we can do. We are essentially awareness but the apparent individual is not a mistake. It helps if we can avoid the need to fall one side or the other.

It's really important to be very familiar with yourself as naked awareness. From that stance we see, very clearly that the show is inseparable from awareness. We then see that, it's no longer accurate to describe reality as oneness and so from this position of wisdom, the sages described reality as "Not two." There are no black and white answers at this stage. You may have noticed that insisting on black or white answers in the dualistic show only ever causes tension between factions that disagree?
