How can so many people dislike this video,I wonder? Who cares? This is a brilliant presentation,and,just what I need for my messed up "snowscape"! I can adjust things as I am painting with oils. Great information regarding contours of the land etcetera. Excellent video,Rick,excellent.

Wonderful tutorial as usual👏🏻👨‍🎤I have learned more about painting in watercolor since finding you on KZbin than from any other source. I am currently taking lessons and will encourage everyone in the class to watch you for inspiration. The ladies that are teaching the class are volunteers and won’t be offended 😊I’m sure they will love your videos as well. Thank you again Rick🙏🏻

Excellent tutorial! The vocal component perfectly explained each step in the process. And the word "inspiration" put the point across that Rick did not set out to copy his reference photo but rather to use it to inspire him to create a work of art which gives the feeling- the essence - of the scene. Interesting use of the 1 inch flat brush for most of the painting. Great colour mixing component and reference to beautiful neutral colours created by different ratios of complementary colours. I got lots out of this video. Thank you Rick.

Thank you for the awesome demonstration. Stunningly beautiful! Both in its simplicity in composition and for conveying the feeling of snow and the angle of the sunlight from the right side with the use of the masking fluid. And above all for the story it tells. I love how you made the big tree (Chen Chung Wei would call it the King) with the wonderful texture the main focus of the painting and then using the angled tree line to hold our hands and take us on a journey into the woods in two directions from this main tree. However,, to compensate for the short distance on the left side of the painting and to force the eye in that direction, I loved how you provide a sense of tension by makings the left tree (CCW calls it the Prince) just bigger than other trees and also providing a darker hue in the shadows compared than all other trees. Connecting the two together with snow-laden horizontal lines (swings with snow) holds them together very nicely

At 17.28, when you are starting to apply the wash to the upper right side of the painting to suggest a horizon, what is making the twigs in that area have a white highlight? I looks like you used a wax pen on the twigs before you applied the wash.

This is a wonderful video. There is just painting with no gimmicks. I have one question, and I hope you will not take offense at it. I have never seen a brown tree in my life, but I notice when I take a photo, there is a brown cast to them. Is this something you have noticed? I would love to see you paint this same scene on location to see if there is a difference.
@RickSurowiczWatercolor
@RickSurowiczWatercolor 6 жыл бұрын
Sometime I stare a trees wondering what color they actually are. I think they're mostly warm and cool neutrals although I believe most people would say they're brown. When looking at them, I think you can pick up a lot of reflective light with a range of color that goes across the spectrum. When painting trees I think it's less about they're local color and more about the context. What time of day, what's the lighting, what's around it. That's most influences my interpretation as I paint.

Hello Rick. I'm a new subscriber and I'm fascinated by your skill and methods. I've been doing watercolours on and off for many years as a hobby. Always exciting but also frustrating. Can I just ask you about spraying as I'd like to try myself. After repeated sprayings, do you ever find the underlying marks come away with the fresh layer?
@RickSurowiczWatercolor
@RickSurowiczWatercolor 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Barbara, Thanks for subscribing! I've never had any problems with the spray removing previous layers that I can recall. I dry my paper many times throughout my painting process and the layers are pretty well set once dry. If I had a heavily pigmented area and sprayed forcefully at it, it would probably disturb the paint some, but I would have to work at it. Thanks again for watching !

Hi Rick, These demos are great. Do you generally use a limited pallet for most of your painting?

Thank you ! I have a 6 -8 colors I work with most often and do find myself frequently using a limited palette, however, there are times when I use many colors.

Rick, could you please let me know what type of paper you have used here?...the whites are well defined and I have been looking for a good quality "whiter" paper... thank you.

I work almost exclusively on 140CP Lanaquarelle watercolor paper. The whiteness of the paper is one of the things I like. I have all my supplies listed on the studio page of my website. Here is the link: rsurowiczart.com/studio/

I do like these unassuming patches you find and turn them into something beautiful. I do have a question on non snowy projects. Do you ever find that the white that you are saving is too bright ? I find myself tinting mine quite a bit and I know that that is a no no.

When I do a snow scene, I usually remove my masking at the end to give the suggestion of the white snow. Often when I'm painting other scenes I remove the masking much earlier in my painting process. I normally put a variety of washes over the area I' masked to tone it down. It's more of a light that a white.

Thank you Rick ! That is exactly the answer I was hoping for but didn't expect because I thought it was so taboo what I was doing. Thank you so much !

I still stay with transparent watercolors. It's pretty much the same as masking an area off with frisket while you work on other areas of your painting. When you're ready, you remove the frisket and begin painting the area you protected.

Thanks Bruce! Actually, I live about 15 minutes from a marsh in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. I decided I wanted to paint some Lillie flowers this fall, unfortunately, by the time I decided to paint them, the season had taken it's toll. I plan on giving it a go this Spring when they return.

I am just getting into water color paints and I want to buy some masking fluid. Is it better to buy the ones with the nib or use a brush? Are some masking fluids better than others?

Hi Syd, I have my preference on what I use. I rarely use a brush because they're so hard to keep from getting gummed up. I use a variety of squeeze bottles, toothbrush, rubber tipped shaper, and adhesive frisket (packing tape). I'm not sure if you've seen the two videos I have on masking. In those I demonstrate the methods I use. I have the supplies I use listed on the "studio" page of my website including the materials I use for masking. If you haven't seen the videos here are the links as well as the link to the studio page of my website. Love this so much... especially the reveal when you remove the masking fluid...WOW!!! I also have a question not to do with this painting... One of the first mind bending paintings I ever watched and have sent hours, literally hours, trying to find it again... it was the pebbles and stones you did starting out with 'patches' of pinks and blues then painted the negative spaces to make the pebbles. It literally blew my mind and I'm desperate to watch it again. It's on your collage at the beginning of each video but the tutorial has disappeared from YouYube.. why??? Please please please could you re-post it? Thank you for all your wonderful tutorials :)

Thank you Christiane ! I have definitely done some paintings of rocks before, but I don't recall doing a video of the rocks. All my videos are still posted. I've actually thought about doing a video of a rock painting, but haven't yet. The image in my introduction slide is actually from a full sheet watercolor I painted before I started doing my videos seven months ago. Might you have seen a video by "Rukiye Garip" ? She has some nice videos of rock paintings.
