Thank you for this interesting concept. I'm a beginner. I've been painting every day for about seven months now. I finally have decent brushes and professional grade paints that I enjoy. I've very recently been finally getting over myself, a little an trying exercises in a looser style. Your examples of ways to use this effect are really impressive. I especially liked the landscape with building example. I don't see many people using this technique. Of course, the floral in which you've used tape to create added interest, I found to have a kind of stunning effect in showcasing the whole composition. I like your work and your flexibility with style. I'm learning and picking up some great ideas.

My question is, how do you know what color/combination of paint you used. I did this exercise and loved it. I found tiles that I really liked. But, I have no idea what colors were used in each tile.
@RickSurowiczWatercolor4 жыл бұрын
My palette rarely changes and I know the colors on my palette very well. That being said, I pay the more attention to the color I see as it relates to the color wheel and less about the name of the particular color I used. If I like the combination of a yellow orange, red violet, and yellow green, I know I can get there with any number of paints.

I really like this exercise! I’m new, and can’t be too free with my strokes because I have a tremor. In spite of that, I would like to continue trying. I looked at the classes on your website and they looked too hard for a newbie.. Do you have a list of videos that would be the most helpful for a new person? Are there really more than three classes offered, perhaps that I just don’t know how to get to? I’m not on Facebook and don’t want to do that so really I guess I’m asking for your advice as to how your videos/ classes can help me. Thank you so very much!

What a great video! I just tried this today and I am a total water color beginner....but mine came out great! I loved just playing with the colors! The only trouble I had was when I removed the masking tape...it made part of my watercolor paper (140 lb cold press) come up and fuzzy looking. I think I need to look for a different type/brand tape? Any suggestions? Thank you for this great video and the inspiration to try this!
@RickSurowiczWatercolor6 жыл бұрын
I work on 140 CP most of the time. Most often I just use masking tape to tape my paper to my board. When I remove it, it may leave the paper fuzzy, but it's on the edge and doesn't impact anything. When I use it to mask with on my painting surface, I'll put the tape on something else first such as my jeans or other fiber to lessen the adhesive. I've used 3M, "Duck" brand and generic brands. At some point I've had success with all and issues with all. I think they vary batch to batch. It's best just to experiment. Currently I'm using 3m and "Duck" brand.
@SantaFeLady6 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! I will try the tape on the jeans trick next time! That makes sense!
@RickSurowiczWatercolor6 жыл бұрын
I've done it before and someone else also commented that they use that method.
@NicKullenNiksharStud6 жыл бұрын
The jeans/other surface idea is something I use myself & it helps a lot. Just be a bit careful that you don’t cause little gaps on the tape edge with too much dust etc because if there’s too much the paint can leak/seep under the tape a bit & you won’t get a nice crisp edge look! It takes a few tries to get it just right (a lesson I learnt myself, lol) but it does work! :)

I know my palette pretty well. For the most part I can recognize the colors as they appear on paper. That being said, I try to view them for the colors they are on the color wheel and not so much the name on the tube of paint. For example violet, blue violet, with yellow orange, and yellow green rather than ultramarine blue and rose madder, and sap green.....
