For the next 8-10 years, our priority in terms of Air Power would be more tilted towards building up Sq. numbers via Tejas Mk2 & MRFA (which will eat almost 80% of IAFs budget). Apart from Sq. numbers, IAF is looking at acquiring more second hand Refuellers & AWACS (which I genuinely feel is a good idea). Add to that building on Air Defence capabilities by acquiring XR SAM & Akash NG. Other areas where we would be spending good sum of money include the Super Sukhoi Programme, development of AMCA & IMRH etc. Keeping all this in mind, we have very little funds left to acquire big strategic Aircrafts like A 400 & even if we do, it won't likely be in big numbers. I guess we can use the same Mig 29 route, also being planned for Su 30 i.e Comprehensive upgrade Avionics & EW Suite of IL76 being done by DRDO while negotiating with Russia for upgradation of engines of IL 76. It's important to keep IL 76 in service for another 10-15 years & for that Engine Upgrade is a must. Engine upgrade would also improve it's serviceability quite a bit. IL 76 along with C 17 will take care of our Strategic Airlift capability, specially while facing a 2 front threat for the next 10-15 yrs.

Indian govt should invest heavy in aircraft manufacturing be it fighters or transport military and civilian. We are one of the largest consumers we simply cannot let our consumption be used against us. More and more new airlines are opening and military requirements are also growing

And we have requirement at least 50 for transport fleet 15 to 20 for air to air refeuling and 10 - 15 for awacs but all this requires political power and no defense dallal jai Hind

C-17 Globemaster is the best heavy transport aircraft in the world. But C-17 Globemaster production has been already stopped. In spite of it, Indian Air Force can purchase used C-17 Globemaster from US Air Force. Because more than 100 C-17 Globemaster are existed in US Air Force fleet. So India Govt should purchase more 20 used C-17 Globemaster heavy transport Aircrafts from US Air Force fleet. I think it's only one solution to increase fleet of C-17 Globemaster heavy transport aircrafts in Indian Air Force transport aircraft fleet..

No. They're unreliable as hell. Many personnel have stated this. The airforce itself uses the C-17 for everything it'd use the Il-76 for. We need to avoid them like the plague

The problem is, there aren't much heavy lifters. There was C-17 whose doors are closed. New IL-76 probably not after russian invasion and reliability issues. Another good option was AN-124. then there are super heavy lifters, C-5 galaxy and AN-225 which are probably unnecessary and too expensive for IAF.

Have a que , we know C17 production is stopped but we know there r 100s of such aircraft present in boneyard and its said they r maintained with time so that they can be used in emergency , so cant we buy some from there and modify with things that are required ?

C17s are not in the "boneyard". Only old aircraft which the USAF does not use anymore are kept their. But the USAF though they have almost 150 C17 want even more and are not going to retire their C17s any time soon, thus you won't find any in the boneyard

Only way to upgrade them is now to retrofit them with comparable western engines similar to D30 of IL76 or just get new engines from Russia,rest for avionics,subsystems replace them with compitable western subsystems. Next,IL76 are already 35+ years old & soon they are scheduled to be retired by mid of next decade,so time to search for alternatives now. Now,no other platforms are available in its category,so India need to buy the entire design of An 70 from Antonov,(An 170 variant)which is cash stripped for now & manufacture them locally,using Indian & western components,with western engines,avionics & subsystems. It will have a payload capacity of 47-50 tonnes with minor modifications. 36 units locally produced to replace the entire fleet of IL76 & IL78,also to add numbers. Next,in Tactical Airlifter category,we need to mantain the fleet of 36 C130J Hercules (24 purchased from Royal Airforce & upgraded) 72/80 C390/C2 locally produced here to replace the entire fleet of An 32. 120 C295 Transport (Additional 60 units ordered later) 72 units for Airforce,36 units for Army,6 units for Navy/Marines & 6 units for Coast Guards. ***Out of 36,12 units modified to act as Gunships.

Our only options for stratagic lifters are A400M or Il 476 either we can upgrade our current fleet or buy new airframes however in the current situation this russian solution is not possible..one more option is we buy c17s from USAFs storage but its highly unlikely.

We should avoid IL76 like the plague. Low availability and unreliability is not a good sign. Every time we hear of airlift and cargo ops by our armed forces we always see the Globemasters and Hercules. We should seriously consider going for the Airbus co production on the lines of C295. We have the expertise with Tata and Airbus..

Sukhoi also offers its jet with American and European engine but Airbus and Boeing have lobby and they don't allow the agencies to allow to sell thier aircrafts in European and American market. China also made but it's more or less copy of Boeing aircrafts and they both struggling to get safety checks due to lobby. Except few countries like India, China, and Russia whole world follows American and European Air safety agencies thats why they know developing a Commercial jet is not profitable due to lobby

We need medium capacity transport planes in numbers,. latest one from Embraer matches requirement. India shall keep 5% of annual outlay for Defence, 5% on education and 7-8% on Health for next 10-12years. It helps to integrate and co-operate Military, Tech Education and Private Sector.

@@hrushikeshavachat900 It's better to make one ourselves if proper commitment is there, c295 negotiations started first 20 years back, our acquisition procedure is pathetic, if the feasibility study and design phase can be completed in 5-6 years, tata would most likely have finished production of c295, then it will be a smooth run. If a similar agreement like c295 can be made for A400 on a G2G basis, it's alright.

There are two projects from Antonov an178 &188 (20t&40t) which are failing to find partners and now since the possibilities are slim due to war. If possible we should buy them with tot and ip instead of buying from West or Russia .cargo aircraft is as important to fighter jet and we must be self reliant it.

Best solution in same or better than IL76 is the Japanese C-2 or Airbus A400. Embraer C390 is smaller and more analogous to C130.

We should go for A400M i think it can pretty much replace c130 & IL76. 50-60 Units of A400M will fulfill all our needs but Problem is they are very expensive systems. 200 million USD atleast ( which will make deal worth 10-12 billion Usd) thats a lot of money when we are in desperate need of Fighters aircraft & buying a aircraft without its MRO is foolish move instead go for C390 if they allow full technology transfer.

@@AlphaDefenseHindi cargo bay of IL76 is 3.45x3.4x24.5 While A400m Its cargo bay is 4x3.85x23.11 it has wider cargo bay compared to IL76 which is why i think it can pretty much do all operations of Indian airforce. Rest or heavier payloads can be done by C17.

We can absolutely but the Indian govt doesn't want to spend money on any kind of R&D. It's a typical Indian mindset of extracting every last drop from the barrel no matter the human cost.
