Transverse post-tensioning is done to strengthen the deck slab (or sometimes diaphragm) in direction perpendicular to traffic flow. It's purpose is similar to longitudinal post-tensioning, only the direction of application is different. It is usually done in bridges where the deck width is large, which makes it difficult to design the deck slab conventionally.

Maybe there is a required elongation to attain the required tension on each rod also in the absence of calibrated tensioner. The reason why they are taking measurements.

No procedures, no QA , and workers speaking Spanish - I guess this is a reenactment of the FIU bridge tensioning work. I especially enjoyed watching the guy trying to get a reading with that digital vernier caliper. I guess the mantra here is design it with a micrometer and built it with a yard stick.

Seems to be a lot of uncertainty on the lengths of those strands. Would it not be very important to stretch them equally in length? I am getting nervous about bridges and high rises now that I am learning about pre stress and post tensioning.

The cable when tensioned to the proper force will elongate an exact amount according to length. The engineers should be providing that data for the installers. What’s not clear is if the cables were all the exact same length on the working end when they started tensioning. In fact that measurement is irrelevant. The measurement that is important is the amount the cable stretches during tensioning.

These methods are fine so long as the cable remains secure and the concrete is a perfect blend, both of which in my 30 years of engineering are not always the case!

In an Unbonded Post-Tension application there should be a level 1 qualified installer, a level 2 qualified inspector and a level 3 qualified designer. The lvl 2 inspector reports back to the designer such criteria as tenon profile prior to concrete placement, date and times of placement and tensioning, mix design, core samples and the amount the cable/s have deflected (stretched). It’s the design team’s (engineers) responsibility to determine then if they will sign off on the work or not. You can get more information at the Post-Tension Institute if you like.

I wonder, could a cable snap? Might cause an injury when turning the restraining-collar nut bare-handed.
@badlandskid
@badlandskid 3 жыл бұрын
It’s possiblebut very uncommon. However a glove wouldn’t help in that case. A tensioned cable will pull back into the concrete if there is a break. The danger zone is usually above the cable in question. That’s why no one should be allowed to be around other than those doing the tensioning.

Have any of u know it all commenters gone ahead to see if this bridge (i assume) is still standing and functioning or were u to worried about them not having an expensive stand because most u union workers are fat and lazy. U speak “safety” but workers do the work. Your mouths and entitlements are often to full. LOL. These dudes were working with what they had. Um hey boss I need a better stand. No u need to find a new job, ur fired. Give me your wife as well. Our working class sucks in America. Too many regulations causing too many shitty workers.
