This helps with singing range in my experience as well. Retracting your false folds as you approach a high note can help you hit it in tune without straining. I'd also say that retracting the false folds is one of the most useful ways you can sound more feminine as you sing, although it's challenging to avoid abducting the true vocal folds at the same time, which makes one sound breathy, especially in the lower register. Great stuff as always, Z!
@TransVoiceLessons4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! Retraction of the false folds really helps so much -- increased range, increased sustain, lighter quality, etc. It's true that it can be difficult for some to find adequate true fold engagement while heavily retracted. It's a fun balancing act! Thanks for your post! :D

@@TransVoiceLessons What are your thoughts regarding inhaled vocalization? It's often used to imitate pig squeals/dinosaur noises (heavy constriction, relatively high pitch, and incredibly deep resonance, inhaled). I'm well aware that extreme volume/duration (i.e. performance) can cause some serious damage, but is there any risk if done in relative moderation?

“Smiling with the throat” was particular helpful Z, I have been speaking over an intercom quite a bit lately and have been noticing the kinesthetic relationship between open throated sounds and close throated sounds. Just to share: I lost my voice to a whisper 5 years ago (at age 54) to really bad laryngitis. My complete voicelessness lasted for 1 week, but I knew something was not right with my voice when I could talk again. I could not get back to singing normally. After a whole year, I could horribly sing at the lower register (I could not sing at the higher register (F4 and above). After yet another year, I could strain but reach notes up to F4. I pretty much lost my joy and desire to sing. I tried "everything" from seeing 3 otolaryngologists (all of them said that my vocal folds were fine), speech therapy, to throat massage, to pills and potions... but my voice still wasn't the same. My last ditch effort was to try voice lessons from a classically trained voice teacher (an hour every week for 12 weeks), although I sing pop/rock. My vocal folds slowly started getting stronger again with some stamina. But I always tried to tell everyone that I "feel" like there's something above my vocal folds that flap around and kill my tone, but no one addressed it. I browsed a LOT of video clips about voice problems until last week, I ran into someone talking about false vocal folds, which are "above" the vocal folds! I explored the videos and tried to patch in ideas as I saw them. Then watching your video, I was so impressed! You had the most complete and organized information I had ever seen about this topic. I so very much thank you for posting it. I will follow your tips and hopefully, I can get back my range somehow... from B2 to A5 (chest to mixed voice). Wish me luck! And more power to you! God bless...

The more I watch this and practice… the more I realize how much I’ve been muffling and choking off my speaking and singing voice. I’ve never felt so much ease and relaxation and clarity before. It’s amazing how our psychological state can affect how we approach vocalizing. (In terms on mental health in my case I mean.) Thank you so much for this video. I’ve learned and am still learning so much. I wish I found this sooner.

I feel this video so far is the key to my hyper phonation from generalized anxiety all my life. I always sound muffled and people always ask me to speak up or repeat myself. My singing voice has “power” but a croakey finish that sounds throaty and husky and effortful and like I’m out of breath while inhaling at full capacity, even while fighting against the collapse of the diaphragm (support.)
@tetralloyd65762 жыл бұрын
I've really struggled with that grunting/constricted sensation when phonating in general (studied opera in college) and it only got worse when I started transitioning. I had one classical voice teacher that did wonders for relaxing my sound as a classical tenor, but I know now that it was only half the battle. With your videos, my own expertise as a voice teacher, and the incredible ear of my partner who is also a voice teacher, I'm stepping into what feels like uncharted territory of my voice on a weekly basis! It's really taking a whole village and I'm here for it. Thank you for your scientific and positive psychology based approach to voice. Now I have technical terminology and biomechanics to help me, and a whole bunch of exercises to help with refinement. For context, I'm a 6'2/250lbs cis male, so my normal voice is naturally loud, bassy and chest-resonant, but this breakdown playlist has very quickly made me more confident in a feminized vocalization.

I have just found your clips and have followed your them from the oldest to the newest. As always the clips are concise, informative, and your presentation is professional. Your voice is pleasant and encouraging. I see that there are a few dislikes on most of the clips. Apparently the dislikes refer to the subject matter, because the presentation is always impeccable. The subject is one that definitely needs to be addressed by someone with personal experience. I have watched others try to teach the same things. While the material is factually correct, their methodology is usually far less precise than yours. I especially like the use of the clips with the Friture, the Isotope Ozone 5, or the Speech Tracker as you talk. It demonstrates perfectly what you are teaching. Keep up the good work, and thank you.

Hahahahaha I love you so muuuuuuuch. Everything in these videos is just amazing, your delivery, your presence, your voice, your modulation, your explanation, the visual aids, the text, the little musical interludes/piano bits for the titles, just everything. I'm just a confused dude who likes to crossdress in private sometimes and I'm merely curious about voice at the moment, but if I lived alone or didn't expect any questioning I'd try the exercises out, because they do look fun to do, plus the thing being taught is also very interesting.

I must have had some kind of condition where my false folds were 'stuck' because the moment I did the first relaxation exercise it was not only euphoric but also I felt them physically "unstick". Not only my natural speaking voice sounds much better without any extra effort (more clear, less labor), my breathing has improved and my neck feels less tight. I'm gonna be reaching out to my PCP and try and see someone about this (naturally) to make sure nothing else is going on that I should know about. Thanks for all that you do Z!

I've been lucky enough to be born as my right gender, but this video still helped me. Several years ago I started struggling with my voice involuntarily constricting so this video really helps!

ayo, this video was uploaded on my b-day! Not necessarily here bc I'm trans, but it is still great knowledge to know as a singer. I consider it as an extra tool in the utility belt to know these interesting things, so thank you for all of the effort you put into these videos to make them entertaining to listen to!

This stuff is soo interesting. i definitely constrict when modifying resonance, and I've always wondered why i sound great sometimes and other times constricted, not knowing what i was doing differently. I've definitely learned to speak by mimicry. So much to think about! (thank you!)
