His company, Birkett Labs (later Birkett Automation Industries) began supplying automated pen assembly machines to Bic Pen around 1960 (the year I was born). His machines still manufacture Bic pens to this day. Dad passed away in 2014.

@drrick8839

Me too! Loved the movie and the parts they showed were actually authentic! The equipment was built in the fashion of the times but didn’t show all the ancillary equipment. The cathode Ray tube they showed was actually an image orthacon (likely a prop built to look very similar to one). That was the sensor in the camera that converted the image to electrical impulses.The CRT was the display tube in the receiver. I actually have equipment in my collection that looks very much like the props in the movie. I have enough era-appropriate parts on had to build similar props that could actually be made to work. One side note, the imaging devices at the time required a tremendous amount of light , much more than the room lighting in the movie. Actors had to wear very heavy makeup to present enough contrast to make a somewhat watchable picture. RCA, among others had working systems at the time. There was actually commercial telecasting being done in dust the time. The war held up consumer television broadcasting but it exploded after the war, especially with the fast track additional development done during the war. The consumer televisions available after the war were far superior to the pre-war stuff.

In the late 1800's and the early 1900's the electrical industry had opportunities for entrepreneurs and inventors a like. There were more opportunities in the electrical age then their is today. That should tell you the technology was not knew and its been around a very long time. After ww1 and ww2 all that was taken away. They had electric vehicles, warden clyffe towers, cloaking devices and flying machines without wings. Ww1 was won by that technology and ww2 destroyed the aether technology the world had for hundreds of years before that.

This movie is pretty amazing. I didn't know they knew about the cathode ray tube all the way back in 1936, for I thought it came out in the late 40s. Aside from that, it's a sad premise that people tamper with someone else's genius invention or ideas. In my years of working, I've seen similar things happen. But in this movie, Lyle should have called people over to his apartment the minute the tv started working, so they could see it for themselves. The atmospheric conditions could have changed the next day, or something similar, and the tv wouldn't work right. If he called people right over, at least they would have seen there is promise for his invention.
