Now this is a horror game that stands against Triple-A developers. Just the occasional jump scares here and there but the entire adventure of trying to investigate your way out of the apartment is just anxiety inducing!
@johnDoe-uw2zs10 ай бұрын
I don't know, don't you think the camera is a bit nauseating? I never understood why some devs include camera bobbing in their game in the first place. Also I'm pretty sure they assets flipped the kowloon city model, I'm pretty sure I saw this city model in the the beginning from another game, either it's from paranormalHK, or Manacle.
@lovesum1n10 ай бұрын
@@johnDoe-uw2zsHmm, I do have to agree with you on that. Especially the head bobbing lololol. Nonetheless, good game!
@Blisterdude12310 ай бұрын
The wobbly head movement is utterly infuriating though. It's like you're playing as a living bobblehead with a bouncy spring for a neck. I'll never understand why developers insist on massively overexaggerating just how much the human head moves when you walk, or stand still. I get trying to recreate the sense of 'normal' ambient motion, but this is comedic.

Kowloon itself, even without the paranormal, was a creepy place. The densest living space humns ever lived, walled off from the rest of the country to the point the place had it's own law.

The sound design in this is incredible. The low background humming, all that sudden creaking, rustling, whispers, just the right distance away from the ear, it played with my mind brilliantly, makes you so tense all the time. The character's wobbliness also adds to the atmosphere, everything feels miserable and unstable

The game was everything you said it was, CJU--atmospheric, claustrophobic, oppressive. After looking at photos of the real walled city, I think the reality may have been nearly as inhospitable and grim as the game. A (possibly😆) fun fact: It looks like the devs drew heavily from real photos to design the game. For instance, the protagonist's apartment looks almost exactly like a photo I saw. Thanks for playing this well-crafted game!

Videos of Kowloon before it was demolished seem just as creepy with a maze of hallways and dingy micro-businesses on the lower levels. Leaks were abundant and ground levels wet. How anyone could find their way to their apartments is anyone's guess. The location is now a park.

24:59 Pause exactly at that second and put it at a quarter speed. It definitely adds to the effect and is hilarious at the same time with the awesome jump scare and the quarter time voice going "wooOooaahhhoohhhoh". Regarding the monster, if you let it play until it slides back behind the door, it's super creepy to see how it moves just slightly supernatural-ish. My partner says "It moves like a spider. Ugh... Awful when a bipedal thing does it."
@kreidas12310 ай бұрын
I will say this - this was quite nostalgic. This game definitely reminded me of when I was living in Hong Kong all those years ago - some of my friends would live in places like this, mostly in the New Territories. Obviously not as dark or horrorfied as this game, but architecturally very similar. And it's probably because of this reason that, although I like the game for what it is, I do see this more as a Hong Kong apartment simulator than a horror game. For me specifically, the game "Devotion" carried a lot more impact. I think for the audiences outside of Hong Kong, and especially for those who've never been to the real Kowloon Walled City (especially after 1994, when the last building in KWC was demolished), this would definitely be more amazing. Thank you for showcasing this Chris.

This honestly felt like a refreshing variation of PT. The required back and forth to trigger changes didn't feel monotonous because there was so much detail added, yet so much darkness to obscure things. It basically feels like you're a kid again seeing monsters in the shadows at bedtime. They even did a great job on the flashlight! Nice and bright, but a tight beam so you never lost that nervousness. The fact that one of the Devs also gave us 9 Childs street probably has something to do with the quality atmosphere. I didn't find it particularly scary (jumpscare games rarely are for me, even though the scares were well done here), but still really loved what they did here. We seem to get a lot of horror games set in Kowloon, and with good reason, because the claustrophobic atmosphere is so unique. I almost wish someone would do a game jam or anthology set entirely in Kowloon. Incidentally, one of the four Devs has another game coming out soon called Mental Harm which also looks like it has some nice atmosphere going for it.
