Trapping Southeastern Pocket Gophers

Trapping is a very effective method for controlling southeastern pocket gophers. A hay farmer near Bascom, Florida demonstrates the basic techniques he uses to trap pocket gophers that have invaded his hay field. Their mounds damage hay equipment used at harvest.

Every time I've tried these traps the dang thing pushes dirt into it and sets it off without getting him, or it covers the whole thing in dirt to block the hole. I'm at my wits end.

@@PeterSonnyFortunato You must also trap fence lines and road ditches too.....if you really want to take control......thats where they migrate from.....under heavy grass or brush.

Me too. Been trying to trap them for 2 weeks now. They just push dirt in the trap and it trips It. So frustrating!

Hahahaha. I killed 5 and Me and my dog went toe to toe with one. Ugly little guys when they are on survival mode. Killed it with a shovel. That was my first kill ever.. I felt guilty..lol..it was funny as hell

@@BurtBowers I believe the white handled item on the left is the probe/digging tool used for the gopher hawk. I have the best luck with wooden box traps that are around 40 plus years old.

My Victor trap was stupid wouldn't set it kept activating so I notched the plate where the arms rest and it started working okay

Your first mistake......never probe or stand on or near a mound you plan to trap !!! This will encourage a gopher to plug the hole before the trap ! Second mistake....never open the tunnel as you did. If you are careful you can open the " main " single entry and only have one hole to deal with...and one trap to set. The way you opened it chances are there is another tunnel opposite the one you found. If you have two hole..abandon it until new digging occurs. Try again later. Ive been trapping gophers for 45 years.....use numerous traps...The Lanesboro GT 100 trap revolutionized my trapping ! If set correctly 99.9 success rate ! Out of the 300 gophers I trapped last year....I missed one. Water from a rain storm flushed the hole full of dirt. Gophers can and will become very trap smart ....almost impossible to get a second chance !

Very simple solution to eliminate gohpers on your property. And it didn't take a rocket scientist or someone such as you that has 45 years of trapping and killed 300 last year!!!! I bet you think are a proud MF for spewing that info! WTF dude!
