Whomever requested this is a genius. I've been listening to this song for a long long time. My husband found this band during the Iraq war as a solider and sent it to me. It was a way for us to connect. Brings back beautiful memories. Literally when he got home we used to ride around at night pumping this in the car just feeling the breeze and smiling. It's a memory of a memory....wild.

M83 is an early pioneer of the Synthwave genre. His mid-2000s LP called “Saturdays = Youth” was highly influential. But “Midnight City” in the early 2010s was a sudden nuclear hit. Soon after, Synthwave showed up all over music - pop radio, film/TV scores (Drive / Stranger Things), Video Game OSTs (Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon), and everywhere else. My fav Synthwave act is The Midnight. But M83 was among the first.

This is such a great song. It's considered synthwave. Midnight City is one of my favorites from this period of synthwave along with "The Mother We Share" by Chvrches.

This is not EDM this is like synth wave rock pop. These guys experiment a lot with different sounds which what makes them unique. They also mess with crazy Hz wave frequencies that give euphoric feelings. So back in 2011 when this was released it was very revolutionary. It became so iconic that GTA 5 included it in their radio rotation. This group is just out of this world and I think they perfected the modern sound.

Hearing this just brought back so many emotions. I guess this would have been 2011 or so and I was in a 30 day program in Austin, Tx.. the beginning of a decade long alcohol problem that I finally overcome a few years ago.. but was on day like 27 or so and they were driving us to a meeting after doing a sweat lodge.. just remember feeling so amazing and optimistic.. unfortunately I went on to make a series of bad choices and I guess I just refused to learn my lesson. I am so grateful to be up here in Olympia, Washington now and me and my mom have a fresh start. So I guess I am just Glad To Be Alive, 2025

I just heard this song for the first time maybe a month ago. I know I heard it in commercials and movies , in passing, but I kept forgetting to look for it for all these years. I can't believe how almost hypnotic this song is. Its like a song you could blare in your car driving down the highway, or any road, at night just chilling. Gotta romantic feel also if you have a certain someone you like to think about. This song game out in the mid 2000s, that's about when society started getting hungry again for "retro" anything from the 60s up to the 80s. Neon returned big time, later abstract shapes on shirts, and the again this type of synth music straight out of the late 70s (Gary Numan and Blondie) and the 80s ( everything in the 80s was synth even rock )

I would personally qualify M83 as like... mellow EDM, or lounge EDM. It's not far from trip hop roots and a lot of synth-pop and so on. If you like them, you should definitely check out Phantogram, Cannons, Chromatics, and a bunch of other stuff in similar cross-genre semi-EDM types.
