Good; but, suggestion? I work in bearing manufacture... to clean out the bearing I would spray it and hose it with air until very clean, (NOT allowing the bearing to spin fast when dry, as will damage the races), Then, check for race damage: spritz a very little WD40 in between the balls, then hold the hub up in vertical position (the way it sits in the bike) by one/two fingers inside the bearing inner ring, and spin the hub at moderate speed, looking to feel for CLICKS (ball denting) or GRINDING (raceway scoring/remaining dirt). Repeat cleaning if necessary... if clicks/grinding remain, time for a new one. Also- most modern automotive-level bearings come out of the factory with 30-35% inner-capacity grease-fill...(commonly Chevron SRI #2 grease, the best). Dave's fill amount looks close enough. Leaving grease in the seal-groove is not recommended; if all is clean it should ease-in smoothly. Also - for the rubber dampers I like silicone spray rather than grease, or rubber. Less chance of accumulating dirt later. But.. Good Stuff, Dave... Thanks.

Are ceramic bearings ok for street use
@888jackflash4 жыл бұрын
@@903assengsxr7 Honestly, I have little experience with ceramic bearings. My best understanding is that they are used in situations where conductivity/magnetism or corrosion would be an issue. While they are purported to be very smooth-running, I could see issues with brittleness under hash automotive/motorcycle applications. Outside of NASA (or perhaps MotoGP tech?), I see no reason why ceramic would be significantly better than 52100 chrome steel, the material of which all top Automotive/Motorcycle-style bearings are made. I'm quite sure the difference in "performance" would be negligible. Stay with good, top-brand-named (Timkin/NTN/FAG, etc.) "EMQ" (Electric Motor Quality) 52100 steel bearings and you'll be close enough to the pinnacle. ALSO- "ABEC" is vastly misunderstood; people consider it a level of QUALITY when it simply refers to the tightness of the tolerances. Also, the "C" designation refers to the radial clearance between the ball and raceway components... the "slop" if you will. "C0" is "Standard".. C3 is common in automotive. BEST- Stay with your factory OEM call-out, they did their homework the best.

Pretty sure that bearing didn't move at 36 min. It can be very hard to tell as the races are so smooth that when greased it feels like they're turning them when in reality your fingers are just sliding around the inner race. If you watch closely you can see a couple of marks on the inner race that don't move when you are checking it.

Hi mr Moss, @ 29:48 correct me if I'm wrong. I think the reason for packing the outer dust seal with grease is to keep water and other stuff from entering and sitting between the sealed bearing and the dust seal. If water goes in it will find the way through the bearing.
@catalystreactionsbw4 жыл бұрын
100% correct if you have an open face bearing. The bearings in the GSXR wheel are sealed with th orange plastic cover and that is what for me, created some confusion.

Can sealed wheel bearings be repacked with grease ? I've seen videos where the seal is taken off. I've had the rear wheel bearing on my Ninja 650 disintegratre after a 8000 km trip and half of that was offroad-gravel like surface. Total kms done on those bearings was about 38,000 kms. I'm wondering why did the bearing fail with nearly all the bearing balls fell out, stranding the bike. Would greasing the bearing before the trip helped ?
@henrikforsberg6834 жыл бұрын
Did you check the wheel bearings before that trip? U could probably feel some side to side movement of the wheel if u did that, and that means the bearings are getting worn out. Putting new grease in might have helped, but it has to be done before its getting worn out.
@DarkIzo3 жыл бұрын
3 months late but even if you already have your answer, ill leave this here for future readers its quite common for new bearings to wear out if you install them incorrectly. on motorcycle wheels you have a center spacer, that sits between the two bearings. it is essential, that this spacer is installed correctly, as to allow the axle to position itself easily, so that the inner races of the bearings arent pulled out of the bearing, when the axle is tightened and are instead tightened against said spacer. if you leave too much space when installing the second bearing, or if you push it in too tight, it will lock the spacer in place and push against the inner race, prematurely wearing the bearings out. best to do some research, but as a quick tip: if your the spacer is tight, but you can still move it with finger pressure, then your bearings are ready to go
@ioandragulescu60633 жыл бұрын
@35:57 shouldn't the silver inner ring of the bearing actually be visibly rotating ? like it did on the back wheel ?
@catalystreactionsbw3 жыл бұрын
The inner bearing on the rear wheel is a bushing that makes up the gap between the wheel bearing and cush drive bearing. The spacer for the front wheel is locked in by the wheel bearing, then the outer spacer stays locked in place by axle tension.

@alanbrown55934 жыл бұрын
Would it not be beneficial to balance the wheel, first without any discs/tyre, then with discs refitted, this way you know that any subsequent issues relate to the new tyre rather than the wheel or discs being the cause for any out of balance issues. Also, put the bearings and seals for 30 minutes in the freezer, the slight reduction in diameter along with the slight increase in the housing (through heat) allows them to just drop in. Having just done a friends rear wheel bearings, on her ER6F, someone had previously packed them with Copper grease. Scary.
