Hi Dan, The Lima J50 is a simple engine. But runs quite well. It does benefit from swapping the old motor out for a CD conversion which is very easy to do. Also putting extra pick ups on the rear wheel helps a lot and stops stalls over some points. 00Bill has done a video on how to do both of these things. I have upgraded and modified several of these engines in the past with good results. As for the smoke box the Pannier tanks smoke box is the same. A separate moulding. It is with a bit of care possible to connect the middle wheels to the connecting rods making it a proper 6 coupled wheel arrangement. You just need a spare set of loco front wheels and the nerve to drill holes in the centre part of the coupling rods. And loosely pin the rods to the new wheel.

I bought one from eBay, cleaned it up, relubed it and fitted a dcc chip. It works very well

Bit of an odd design that the Centre Wheels are not connected to the Rods.
