Ahh, let me give you some context so you can see my point. I originally wrote 'An Explosive Pacient' instead of patient, and that's because I got confused because in Spanish (my native language) 'patient' and 'pacient' are homonyms: 'paciente', both written and pronounced the same, but do not have the same meaning. Since we don't have 'patiente' for someone medically treated, I just translated the word with a 'c' in the middle, stepping over all my years of studying English *sob*

My military teacher who is surgeon in Army hospital, he studied Airborne, Ranger, NAVY SEALs, Reconnaissance, Air Force Commando, Parachute Jumper, Musketeer, UKBT and EOD. He defused bomb in hospital like Derek did but the bomb is C4.

Oh, but they are! Homonyms = same spelling and pronunciation, different meaning. Cognates = words with same root of etymology (not necessarily same spelling, pronunciation nor meaning). Night (eng), nuit (french) and nacht (ger) are cognates, but there can be other examples with even different meaning or within the same language, but I can't think of one right now. I hope that clears that up, and indeed, it's a nice topic, thanks for taking your time!

The word patient may actually be a loanword from french. From what I learned in middle school cognates were two words from two languages that have similar spelling and pronunciation and have the same meaning, I didn't know they had to have the same etymological roots. Sorry if I was being a smug smartass *lightly laughs*

I just didn't know that cognates were based of etymology, I thought homonyms applied to two words in one language like stalk (plants) and stalk (movement), and left (past tense of leave) and left (opposite of right) &c. But this was a nice conversation. Good day

The thing is, homonyms are two words that have same spelling and pronunciation but have different meanings. Such as the word "bow", it can mean a violin bow, bow tie, bow and arrow, &c. Patient and pacient have DIFFERENT spelling AND pronunciation. English has a "t" in the middle (due to french influence), spanish has a "c" in the middle. Not to mention, in english its pronounced "pay-shint", spanish its pronounced "pah-cyent". But then again I didn't know cognates were based of etymology. TBC
