Tampa Brain Injury Lawyer Matt Powell explains the Physics of how a brain injury and whiplash happens.
0:00 Introduction How Car Accidents Can Cause Whiplash
0:01 How Car Accidents Can Cause Brain Injuries
0:10 Isaac Newton Laws of Motion
0:16 First law of motion says an object at rest will remain at rest until acted upon by an outside force
0:25 And an object will continue in motion unless acted upon by another force
0:30 This is the law of inertia
0:44 All objects resist change in their state of motion
0:47 Second law of motion
1:02 How the laws of physics apply to a car collision
1:14 Before impact the occupant of the car is not moving
1:22 What happens when the car is hit
1:30 Most common misunderstanding
1:52 This graph explains the G-forces over time and how the human body is affected
2:30 How the human body moves in a crash
2:46 The torso moves first while the head remains still
3:06 This forces your head to have to accelerate to catch up to the car and your torso
3:17 Your neck has to points of stress and injury
3:22 First injury to the cervical spine is C5-6
3:30 Second injury is to your cervical spine at C1-2
3:48 How does a brain injury happen under the laws of physics
3:55 Brain injury on the cellular level
4:00 What is the difference between gray and white brain matter
4:13 Our brains are floating in cerebral spinal fluid
4:25 The density difference between gray and white brain matter cause the injuries
4:30 How many axons connect the gray and white matter in our brain
4:50 How the brain moves in a trauma
5;15 Different brain mass and floating in liquid cause shearing and tearing of the axons
5:33 What is diffuse axonal shearing
5:50 The laws of physics applied to your brain explains the cause of the injury
6:58 Head positioning can affect your brain injury
7:13 Do you have a loss of consciousness when you have a brain injury
7:20 Common symptoms of a mild traumatic brain injury
7:32 Why are many brain injuries undiagnosed
7:59 Why is the injured person the last to realize they have a brain injury
8:20 Will x-ray, CT or MRI show a brain injury
8:42 What tests show a brain injury
8:50 Does a DTI MRI show brain injury
8:58 Does a SWI MRI show brain injury
9:06 Does a CT pet scan show brain injury
9:20 What does a CT SPECT scan show about a brain injury
9:40 Will an MEG prove a brain injury
9:52 What other tests will show a brain injury
10:00 What do neuropsychological tests show about brain injury and brain function

A traumatic brain injury is caused by a bump, blow or jolt to the head.
This trauma or head injury disrupts the brain's normal ability to function.
Not all blows or jolts to the head result in a traumatic brain injury.
The severity of a brain injury can range from "mild," like, a brief change in mental status to "severe," an extended period of unconsciousness or amnesia after the injury.
Most traumatic brain injuries are concussions.
What is a Concussion?
A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury, caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head that can change the way your brain normally works.
Concussions can occur from a motor vehicle accident, a fall or a blow to the body that causes the head and brain to move quickly back and forth, even though the head itself has no trauma.
Mild traumatic brain injuries are a result of microscopic damage throughout the brain that in turn initiates a cascade of biochemical events that leads to the subsequent formation of Alzheimer's disease.
Motor Vehicle-Traffic Crashes are the second leading cause of brain injuries 17.3 percent and resulted in the largest percentage of brain injury related deaths 31.8 percent.
Closed Head Mild Traumatic Brain Injuries:
A closed head injury is when the trauma does not fracture the skull, but the brain is damaged by a
sudden shaking or movement of the brain inside. If a person's head and brain has a sudden shake,
they will have what is commonly called an "Axonal Sheering Injury."
This injury happens when the axons connecting the white and grey brain matter are stretched and damaged.
75% of brain injuries are classified as mild brain injuries.
However, the definition is not very comforting if you are the one with the "mild brain injury."
Many emergency department doctors call a concussion a "mild" brain injury
because concussions are usually not life-threatening.
Even though a concussion is not usually a life ending injury, it can have a life altering effect.
A brain injury can and does occur without a person being knocked unconscious.
Today, most doctors will agree that a brain injury does not require a loss of consciousness,
however, in the courtroom, most defense experts will say that without a loss of consciousness
there can be no brain injury.
The good news is that medical literature continues to expand and clarify that brain injury does happen without a loss of consciousness.

As a survivor of a serious brain injury who went on to get an advanced degree in cognitive neuroscience, I found your video perfect for those who have diffuse axonal injury from a car accident. Well done. I am wondering how the average person can get a DTI scan. I have had several as part of a brain study and it clearly showed damage to the white matter of my brain, but there aren't many neurologists who have access to this type of imaging. Thank you for this video.

C5-C6 are the most common but there are other factors that would include the remainder of the spine. There are many other factors that also effect the injury (like physical condition, weight, height, the air bags, etc.). I was in a bicycle v car accident. I was a Marine Corps body builder when I received a compression fracture of my T8 and a hyper flexion injury to my cervical neck that effected my T-7-T10 as I went over the handle bars, hit the back of my head and my body hyper flexed resulting in such a wide range of injuries. My injury, in 1991, also resulted in many torn tendons and ligaments on the left side of my neck.

Hi Matt, Well that is a question and a half! The neurosurgeons who can perform the cranio-cervical fusion seem to get a fantastic income out of it as do the medico-legals. The drugs companies certainly do. The insurance companies drastically reduce their outgoings while their incomings remain steady. Do they up their policy costs to their clients when a claim is lodged? Maybe they give themselves a bonus for every claim they obliterate for their client. I don't really know.
@karenroche6194

How much would value this type of injury. It's gotta be at least a six figure sum. How many people a day will possibly suffer this severe whiplash injury, I'm sure hundreds a day. I know it could bankrupt the insurance companies. Rather they deny our injuries and force us claimants into poverty hey! In fact I'm verging on conspiracy theories here, I wondered if the crash for cash scam has been deliberately orchestrated so giving our government a reason to reduce whiplash payouts.

Awe Matt Matt, you are missing the bigger picture here. The main structural ligaments which secure the skull to the top of the spine can be torn. This leaves the skull instable from the top of the spine. A condition called cranio-cervical instability. We all know how footballers can never really play again after a cruciate ligament tear, well the fact is that injury to the alar ligaments is far sinister. Associated with the cranio-cervical instability are other abnormalities at the cranio-cervical junction. I.e. brain herniation (chiari 0), kyphotic clivo-axial angle (The clivius being part of the skull base) adjoining the CCJ. When this angle drops it pulls the brainstem over with it, thus causing stress injury to the brainstem. The clivo-axial angle should lie between 150 and 180 degrees less than 150 degrees is kyphotic. When you flex your head this angle can decrease further. It is a pathological finding. The trouble is uneducated radiologists (like the ones in the NHS) do not measure this angle on the scanned images. The kyphotic angle is associated with brain deterioration). Further deterioration of the damaged alar ligaments can lead to death.
@MattlawAttorney
@MattlawAttorney 6 жыл бұрын
Karen, thank you! You are 100% right. Cranio-cervical instability is one of the most under diagnosed conditions that I see quite often. I am glad you address this problem. We need our radiologists to look for these conditions. We also need better imaging. Fortunately Dr. Scott Rosa, D.C., B.C.A.O has been a pioneer in documenting these conditions and developing imaging protocols that are quite amazing. Thank you for your comment. I plan on creating a new video addressing the cranio-cervical junction to help explain the anatomy and the conditions that develop due to trauma.

Hi Matt, thank you so much for getting back to me. My anger is through the roof. I lost my job and my home, I've sofa hopped for two years. Let down by my GP, my solicitor, my medico-legal Neurologist who killed off my injury claim. He lied on the report, he even admitted he didn't look at the CD with my upright MRI images on and he said it was his belief I had no physical injury. And this man was happy to charge me £3000 for the report so he can look forward to a happy and prosperous retirement. I have to look forward to a deteriorating condition and maybe a very costly fusion operation. I can't find the words to say what I think of him!

Very good and accurate video. Thank you for making it available. Although I am a radiologist (in Sweden), I'd like to say that you don't really need those sophisticated (and expensive) radiological imaging techniques. Taking the patient's history you will *know* when this kind of injury is likely, and thus the diagnosis can be made and be correct. Then, IMHO, the most important thing is the neuropsychological testings, that can show the degree of functional impairment and its change over time.

Thanks for watching. It is interesting in the US, neuropsychological testing is much more expensive than the imaging. As a lawyer who is trying to prove the injury to a jury, and I have to also fight off the insurance company lawyers saying no injury, the more corroborating testing we have to show injury the easier it is for a jury to understand and relate the crash to the injury. Thank you for watching and taking the time to leave a comment! Stay well. Matt

Fantastic video Mr MattLaw, I was hit while stationary Sept 2014, my tow bar was vertical.. I had a brain stem tumor removed 18 years ago, I had an MRI a couple of months before the accident in June 2014 to check tumor recurrence which was normal, the following Oct 2015 the tumor has returned, albeit only 6mm. Two brain surgeons have said no way has the whiplash caused this to return, although I believe it has. Your video explains a lot. I have appointment in 2 weeks with a Barrister here in Perth Western Australia and will be quoting your video to him, I have the yearly follow up MRI tomorrow 12th April. I am trying to find proof that this whiplash DID cause the return of my benign brain stem tumor and HOW, the tumor I think is an ependymoma, I can never remember the name, (that is one of my symptoms memory loss and spelling on so many simple words). Also my cervical spine was shaved down ( laminectomy) at the time of my brain surgery in 1997 so my neck was already much weaker. I would appreciate any cases or info you could advise to present to my Barrister, appointment on 26th April, many thanks in advance.

(cont'd). Usually there also is neck pain with or without visible structural damage. Since the brain has no pain receptors of its own, too much focus may be put on the neck, and maybe the insurance companies demand "x-ray proof" of a neck injury before they accept the injury as being "real" and eligible for insurance compensation? IMHO, the history, physical exam, and neuropsych tests should suffice.

Yes there are statistics compiled by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The latest statistics were released using 2015 data. In 2015 the united states suffered 22,441 fatalities, and there were 2.18 million crashes where people were injured. There were 11,070,000 vehicles involved in collisions that had some property damage. So about 20% of vehicle crashes involve an injury. Hey I was in a car accident cause by out of control vechile and as I avoided the car going sideways down 2 oncoming lanes.. I swerved too outside lane and rear needed car infront and as that happened I was stroked by oncoming car with its rear end hitting my vechile from window to the break light than he drove off... my question is how would I be best to prove my injuries it's been 7 months and I still get dizzy drowsy and my eyes were damaged too but I received both contacts simultaneously so as I was receiving one impact I turned my head in to avoid glass in my eyes than was struck for a whole 8 ft of my vechile pushing me backwards and sideways.. too being pushed forward and sideways the way he was coming at me... I got it quite bad and didn't recipe concussion problems til 2 days later when at work I was keeling over and felt like fainting for a few months and extremely light headed every symptom concussion brings. I suffer from insomnia and I can say I never slept so much in last 7 months yet my doctors been pushing me return to work since the 1st week had have no help from there never seen neurologist and only had CT and x-rays which prove nothing. can I sue my doctor.. they keep saying I have ptsd and I don't have injuries... in past I dislocated my shoulder and collarbone took 3 years to get a proper scan cause my doctor was saying same thing and that my injury was fake and all in my head.

I know this.video is 8 years old, but maybe someone will read my comment? Most whiplash vids or articles refer to the stopped car infringement being rear-ended and the whiplash process happening to the person that was rear ended. I have a whiplash injury from 1999, still gives me trouble, but I was the one who rear-ended the other car. I can remember my head being thrown forward on impact, chin hitting chest and then rebounding backwards. It was like slow motion and felt like my neck was a giraffes neck extending forward before chin hit chest. Can you please explain the whiplash injury in this circumstance, because it is in reverse. The head goes forward first, the chest is restricted by the seatbelt, but the head is not so it flies forward after the torso is abruptly stopped, then the rebound happens. I need to understand this as all videos are on being rear-ended and what happens and nothing on what happens to the one slamming into a stationary object, like a tree or post or another car. Thanks.
@MattlawAttorney

Hi Achala, you pretty much explained how your neck can be injured from a frontal collision. The weight of your head and the momentum causes it to hyper flex forward, which damages the ligaments holding your cervical bones in place.

Unfortunately the way the insurance system is set up & in fact most ppl not being insured contributes to refusing medical treatment. Also to mention being up to your ass in endless hospital bills.

It really sucks that you are minding your own business, driving safely, and some bad driver causes a crash, causes damage to your car, hurts you, causes you to go to the doctors, and you get stuck with all of the problems and bills. All because of a careless person who has no insurance. Please, please purchase UM insurance to protect yourself.

I got something real weird in an accident. Got checked out, was told I was fine. Pain kept getting worse, joints started dislocating during normal use. Got X-rays, was told I was fine. Lost more function, neck twisted up, started having trouble walking… but an MRI said I was fine. Then hospitalized for 8 days, couldn’t breathe or move correctly any longer. You’re not fine but we don’t know what’s wrong so go home. Now I’m 28, disabled, have little left in life I enjoy. Can’t play music anymore, can’t even watch a tv show. Take the brain serious and don’t let doctors blow you off!

Wow~ Your video is very very perfect! My sister have suffered from TBI since 3years ago. She has observed her body's sufferings and tried to live with her injured body. TBI patient is likely to have difficulties to realize how he or she is. She has walked very slowly and she often lost her nerve and suffered from all body's pain and so on.... Though it has passed for 3years and she has suffered from it for 3years, we don't know how her body is and why she cant' move her body naturally. Of course, CT scan and MRI of her body at accident's time was normal. But she couldn't live normally. We could very physically understand how her brain was injured from your video Before a year, she had DTI imaging and as what I am watching from your video, her axons was injured. DTI is likely to be very sutiable for TBI. I want many people to watch your video and to know characteristics of TBI well. Thanks for your good video and your effort! Your are likely to be special lawyer for TBI. Here korea~ You're so far~~

Thank you for watching the video. I am sorry to hear about your sister's TBI. Sadly, most people do not have an understanding of a brain injury, including many doctors. I hope that a lot of people will learn more about brain injuries so that by increasing awareness, we might avoid some accidents, and or if an injury does occur, the doctors will take more aggressive steps to treat the injury and give the patient a better understanding of what is happening to them.

What if both cars are still moving after the crash? I didn’t suffer headaches or neck pain. I had a seat belt and was seated safely I was a student driver. We were going 50 mph and they rear ended us.
@MattlawAttorney
@MattlawAttorney 4 жыл бұрын
Think about the relative speed of the two vehicles. If you are going 50 mph and hit by a car going faster, the amount of energy would be based upon the different speeds and the mass of each vehicle. The bottom line is yes, you can be injured in the way you described.

Thanks for answering my question you are without a doubt the best lawyer on youtube you explain injuries so perfectly that even a lay person can understand it.People really don't understand how painful and demoralizing whiplash can be when you suffer from brain pain for months.I was rear ended by someone who was going at least 30 mph and there was zero visible damage to the car because it was bumper to bumper and the car I was driving was an old police crown vic the rear bumper is solid steel.I had a hard time finding a lawyer even though I had video of the accident and you could see me being thrown back and forward.You should hold seminars around the country..

My husband and I were in an awful accident whereby we ended up being at the bottom of a deep embankment. Our car was slammed on the side and we were pushed backwards then over the embankment. Never touched the embankment. My husband nearly died, was on life support for days. I was briefly knocked out but didn't realize it until a few days later. The hospital took me in the ambulance with my husband they had to do surgery on him to save his life. He's not missing ribs 4-12 and has the shards still inside. Meanwhile I get my back X-rayed because I have a burning sensation going up and down my side. The hospital then just released me without further testing. The next few days my speech was slurred, bouts of vomiting and confusion, couldn't finish thoughts and more. My daughter took me back to the ER and the doc listened to me and stated I sounded as if I had a concussion. He had a CT scan taken and then never came back to talk to me and my daughter! The nurse was like "oh, he didn't come back to talk to you?". Nope. They dropped the ball twice as far as I'm concerned. I still have issues even though it's been 2 years. I can't believe they weren't concerned at all. I was on warfarin at the time also.

+Granny LaLa I am sorry to hear about your tragic car crash. Even though it has been two years, you should try to consult with a good neurologist who actively treats traumatic brain injuries. Also, it sounds like you need to consult an attorney in your area about your legal rights. Each state has different time limits, so please don't delay in talking to an attorney and a qualified medical health care provider to offer a better diagnosis and treatment of your injuries. I how that you and your husband recover from this unfortunate incident.

Thank you. I managed to have enough working brain cells at the time to find an out of town attorney who was highly recommended by several different people. They didn't know the other person recommended him nor were the "recommendees" related to each other. Unfortunately the guy and his father (one of the richest men in the county) had the son's assets hidden by muddying who owned what. Simple little trick of Dad and Son having the same first name is one thing that worked against us. Another was they had a corporation that they bought most of their toys under the name of...so we got the fullest of the insurance for my husband and a good bit for me. But medical bills managed to eat a lot of that. We won't ever be "made whole" in physical sense nor financial means.

-super video...many thanks,Prof Matt...FYI -car /car accident induced trauma is nothing compared to motorcycle/car mishaps, where there isn't any body part that hasn't been sprained,stretched,contused,concussed, twisted uncontrollably for much,much longer than someone securely cocooned within 4 wheels...The FIX for both is Structural Integration,aka,'Rolfing', Osteopathic manipulation,lots of vitamins,herbs&homeopathics,epsom salts, 'tincture of time'...& notmilk.com

d dobs Indeed, motorcycle crash injuries usually result in catastrophic injuries and often times death. The laws of physics apply to motorcycles just as much as they do cars. It is interesting to learn about the physics of braking and turning and how the threshold of friction can be crossed and cause a bike to skid and often go down, resulting in serious injuries. Thanks for watching my video. Matt

Hi Kevin. Sorry to hear about all of your injuries caused by a car crash. I can see how frustrating your injuries are in light of the doctors tests and not finding any clear proof of injury. My advice is twofold. First get a good lawyer to help you with the legal aspects of making a claim for your injuries. Second, you might benefit from consulting with an experienced brain injury doctor. There are many neurologists out there, but not all of them focus treating mild traumatic brain injuries. Try to find a doctor who specializes in brain injuries. They may order more tests such as a MEG, SPECT scan, or a more detailed brain MRI with SWI, or DTI. These tests will not help your health, but they will give you the dignity of a diagnosis. Good luck with your injuries. Matt
