I have thought about wanting to erase my memories of playing this game and starting anew. The closest I have come to that enjoyment is taking my PS3 over to my parents' house one day and having my 66-year old father play through the whole game. He quite enjoyed it.
@awintory2 жыл бұрын
I did the same with my parents after it came out. Took my PS3 to their house and played it for them to witness what all the fuss was about. And literally as I finished, an email showed up in my phone from someone talking about how it had been with them when a loved one succumbed to cancer, and sending thanks for how helpful the game was, and it was truly one of the powerful moments in my life

"I Was Born For This" Chills still. Every Single Time. Playing the game or not. Journey (the game) is great, but the music transforms it to be so much more than a game. You nailed it.

Some time ago i came to realization of what embodies what I felt regarding this kind of tought while watching a Syndicate OST. It was something like: that specific music is able to give a soul to the game, it is a living thing breathing allong your experience serving as a bridge for emotions the game wants you to feel. Like a fluid sea of blue.

The nadir/apotheosis/I was born for this movement *broke* me like open bawling. To this day, I'm not sure what triggered it because I RARELY cry and I know when I experienced it for the first time I was out loud asking myself 'why am I crying'. It is a level of pure emotional beauty that cannot be put into words

I was listening to "I Was Born For This" for the first time, and halfway through I just spontaneously burst into shoulder-shaking sobs. I had previously been fine but the soaring music, the clear vocals, and the thoughts you've written accompanying it all, it all just reminded me of the beauty of human connection, of life, of friends, and of the passion of loving the craft that you do , which is a thing I've forgotten in the monotonous days of working to live and living to work. Sir, you've made something that touches the heart, maybe even the soul itself. Thank you so much for bringing this into the world.

That visual with the receding camera taking in more and more of that backdrop and that lone figure (so tiny in that context) is very powerful along with the singing voices. It's like the sad goodbye after a long journey. We've worked so hard to get to this point and then the finality of it fading into an important part of our treasured memories.

I always think I'm emotionally ready to listen to the single track but every. single. time. I'm not and I end up in tears. This soundtrack has been both my comfort and my motivator through hardship. Once the singing kicks in it's over and I'm a teary eyed messed. I can't think of any other piece of music that has impacted me and moved me in such a way at this soundtrack has. For over a decade this soundtrack has impacted my life and yet only 4 years ago did I finally play the game it came from. I'd love to hear it preformed live but I'd rather not break down crying like a baby in a room full of people.

So now here I am in college doing just that! Im taking an orchestration class next semester and I really want to arrange Journey's music into a medley of sort for harp (my main instrument), as well as a version for me and some of my friends who play other instruments to maybe play in my senior recital. Overall just wanted to say that your music has meant so much to me throughout my life and I hope you keep up the beautiful work :)

Thank you a thousand times Austin for opening the doors of musical composition to me 10 years ago. You said this game changed your life, it changed mine as well. I actually did a concert band arrangement for "Apotheosis" during high-school on my last year. I tried to contact you back in the day because of a voicing part I wasn't sure about, you didn't answer so I tried my best to finish it without direction:) I completed the work, we played the song during a concert normally reserved to film music and Journey had the honor to be the first game presented ever! I'm 25 today, finishing university, with a musical, sound design and cinema/animation background. I'm hoping to work on films and games really soon, composing being my main specialization. It would not have been the same without Journey and your music. Endless gratitude to you and thatgamecompany, take care. Alinoë

As an orchestrator, this was absolutely rapturous to listen to. I’d like to point out some of my favorite moments, most of which I really learned a lot from just by listening and I can’t wait for your as noted videos on this. 0:35: Hey, where’s the triangle? 1:14: An angelic choir, so deftly laid over an already divine piece, lets you know you’re in for something special. 3:50: The textures here are astonishing, particularly given how this needed to be translated from synth. Harmonics, aleatoric log drum swells, crotales, and drones in the choir. Sublime. 6:55: Oh. There’s the triangle. :P 14:07: Could equally exist as a thrilling movement from a cello concerto, it’s just a wonderful showcase of orchestral chops and exciting energy. 20:29: I just really love this moment. Muted brass, a really tastefully played waterphone, and a few moments earlier some really fun multiphonics, and then suddenly it all disappears with a mournful cello solo. 21:32 Stunning effect in the strings!!! 24:19 Oh lawd he comin’ 25:03 This whole movement is probably my favorite. The orchestration choices here are so elegant and religioso, it sounds like I’m listening to Respighi which is a huge compliment. 31:53 I just love the aleatoric woodwind effects here because it's not scary, it's a wonderful, awe-inspiring feel. I’ve learned more about how to use woodwinds listening to your stuff than probably anywhere else. 42:23 Just wonderful to hear those horns go full bore with dissonant choir, was not expecting that in a Journey rescore. 46:24: This little woodwind detour is everything. 46:41: ...and then handing the melody to the chorus…inspired. 54:02-54:58 Probably the most chill-inducing moments of the entire album. The build up to it also is perfection. Just…thank you. You’re one of the big reasons why I still do what I do.

When this dropped a few days ago, I was immediately like 👀 and wasted no time in playing ‘I Was Born for This’, and within 10 seconds I was welling up as years worth of memories came flooding back, like a dam that broke like it was nothing under the weight of all the water it was carrying. Obviously the metaphor here is water = emotion = water (💧= 💖 = 💧). Journey got me through an *incredibly* tough time in my life at the time I started playing it - I’m still alive today because of it - and the score undoubtedly etched itself onto my heart. I played that game every day for like 6 months, and often multiple times a day, just restarting as soon as it finished. In that time, I felt something within me settle, like the turbulence I was facing began to subside. Listening to ‘I Was Born for This’ the other day, though only for 30 or so seconds reminded me that those struggles are still very much alive within me, but I am more steadfast today than I ever was, and those memories that came flooding back were a reminder of that, of what *was*, and what *is*, today, now. Thank you, Austin, I am indebted to you and your wonderful writing. Truly! 🥺🙏💖

Hey Austin, I think you ought to know that I have never played Journey but have loved this soundtrack for years (lest you think people just appreciate it merely because of the connection to the game). It has fueled my creative life for so many years that just listening to it reminds me of all the novels and essays I've written with this in the background. I'm glad I haven't played the game because it makes this soundtrack completely personal to me - over the years it has become the sound of me weaving worlds and constructing. Road of Trials speeds up my productivity and makes my thoughts race and flow in rhythm to the song. I Was Born For This is one of my all-time favorite songs and I attempt to sing it often (though I will never hit all the high notes). That song seems to me like courage for the journey - courage in the face of death and pain and loneliness, courage to meet your destiny and become who you are called to be. At the very least, it's given me courage, and often (along with the rest of the soundtrack) floored me with its stunning beauty. In short, to me it's not a soundtrack for a game - it's a soundtrack for my life. I've listened to this new symphony a couple times and I truly love it (Nascence in particular sounds so much more lush and colorful and the part of 1:14 is so much more strikingly beautiful in this new version). As I step into a new chapter of my life, I'm glad I have this familiar yet fresh and new symphony as a companion to lend courage and inspiration on my journey :)

Mr. Wintory, You probably do not remember me, after all it has been a very long time, but ten years ago right after the original release of "Journey" I commented on a KZbin upload of "I Was Born for This" singing the praises of both that song and the whole soundtrack. As it happened, you saw that comment and we had a lovely conversation about it both there and on Twitter. It's stuck with me all this time as one of my fondest memories of that time and I have been a big fan of yours ever since. It's been a long time since and I had some very difficult years, but throughout that entire time the soundtrack of "Journey" has been a constant comfort and companion. It was one of the things that made me carry on through crumbling relationships, depressions, crises of identity and even my very darkest moments. I remember listening to it at night at the hospital while under suicide watch, unable to sleep. I had even written a note--a last will of sorts--that requested "Apotheosis" and "I Was Born For This" to play at my funeral, something that I regret now, since playing those works would've betrayed the celebrations of purpose and the journey of life that they are supposed to be. Ten years later, I'm finally doing better. New name, new legal gender, new love, new life. But these songs have remained and maybe always will. Being your fan, I'm subscribed to your newsletter and I remember getting the one about this album and getting very excited. But I wanted to sit down and listen to it properly with no distractions. but life has been stressful lately and I haven't found the time. Until today when I decided that I needed this and sat down and listened to it. It took only a minute for me to start crying. And I'm not talking just teary-eyed here, I'm talking full on weeping. The absolutely transcendental beauty of these renditions combined with my strong memories of the originals had me a complete emotional mess and allowed me a listening experience that I have never experienced before. I sobbed the entire way through "Apotheosis." I had thought the original soundtrack to be a masterpiece back then in 2012, but now I'm not even sure what to even call this. These are immensely powerful and outstandingly beautiful pieces objectively speaking to be sure, but to me, their meaning and emotional impact is beyond the descriptive power of all the words I possess. I do not know if you read these comments, but I hope you do. Because after all this time, I just wanna say thank you. From the very bottom of my heart--thank you. Thank you so much.

I cannot put into words the way to express how for just a few weeks how your music, this game, made the world vibrant again. It was like going from blurry vision to a new pair of glasses - you notice so much without ever have realizing the change before and are in awe. Thank you for reminding me how life is experienced. You have kept me traveling forward and alive - all the way until I could see how vibrant everything is by my own free will.

I only just found Traveler and your videos with commentary, which have been very enlightening, so thank you for providing them. Belatedly, I'm so glad that there could still be new Journey content ten years later, because I know I will never forget it for the rest of my life. This symphonic version is beautifully done, familiar yet excitingly fresh. I notice that you attribute a lot of credit for fans' love of the music to the beauty of "the game," particularly for Apotheosis, but I hope you know that the music *is* the game as much as what is on the screen. As players, we explore a masterfully beautiful, shimmering path full of visual indulgence, yes- but it's the music that wonders, frolics, sorrows, races, struggles, and freezes with us, informing and reflecting our feelings as we explore it. Our actions release new instrumental parts into the wild as surely as they free flying fabric creatures from imprisonment. Hearing a note again is just as reassuring as seeing our stiff little character picked up out of the snow. I think that's the crux of Journey's monumental impact on the player- the soundtrack is not a separate or auxiliary feature, it's meshed into a truly holistic and interactive experience. We players are fortunate to skip all of the agonizing over the composition and just enjoy it, because you got your part just right. When something still brings listeners to tears a decade on, the rest is sand under the bridge. (ಥ◡ಥ)

I'm not a music person, don't get me wrong I like listening to music but most of the time for me it's just music. But with this album and any other music by you Austin I get so filled with emotions, I just want to sit, close my eyes, listen, and get surrounded with music. It's really weird, almost like your music is surpassing the sense of hearing, I don't know. I'd say that the feeling I get listening to your music is similar to nostalgia, a warm and gentle feeling. Anyway, amazing work Austin, you made an already great soundtrack into an even better album. Never stop making incredible music!

My commute to work just grew to almost exactly the length of this, and coincidentally the last 25min or so is driving up a mountain. This makes the drive way more exciting, but I do have to remind myself that the other cars don't help me jump higher and they don't appreciate honks for friendship.

I come back to this video time and time again. The composition of the pieces are beautifully done. From beginning to end, this album does not have a single track that disappoints. You have captured movement and emotion throughout (which is only amplified when hearing the music while playing the game Journey). Your work shows you love what you do, and that you are beyond talented. I only wish that more people have the chance to hear your work.

So 10 years ago when I first launched Journey I was incredibly involved from the very first minutes. It was such a surprise. The atmosphere and music enveloped me for 6 hours straight, I just could not take my eyes and ears off this masterpiece. I cried many times up until the end credits. I am now 32 years old and the memories of Journey and your amazing soundtrack will stick with me for the rest of my days. Thank you Austin for making me realize that day that video games can be a work of art. I applaud you! p.s. Hearing my beloved Alina Gingertail, Malukah and others great singers was just a cherry on top

Played this with my girlfriend, she was a novice at video games so it was pretty difficult for her. We attempted to play this game 3 times, the first 2 weren't successful. I know it's cheating, but we wanted so desperately to play together. I waited for months until the player count of Journey went down, and one day when the player number was in double digits on Steam, I asked her to play again. We matched on our first attempt. We finished the entire game in one sitting, it was the first game she finished.

I'm not crying, you are. Even after all these years, no other soundtrack has come as close to being a turning point in so many people's lives. And few other artists have spent so much time cherishing the community that sprang around their works. So to see such a work of love for such a loved piece of art, by such a loving artist... This is a gift. Thank you for sharing it with us as well. In other notes, I want to see and hear a Conan the Barbarian game or movie scored by you Austin. You'll capture the poetry, beauty and savagery of the world and character like no others have since Basil Poledouris. I don't think anyone has the chops to do it right.

Trivia: when I was 16 I got my first ever composer "gig," writing original music for one of my high school teacher's wedding. I recruited the entire school orchestra and conducted the group behind the guests. When it came time for the groom to take his place at the altar, I used an arrangement of "Theology" from CONAN :) The most masculine "sentimental" piece I knew of!
@Hinaloth2 жыл бұрын
@@awintory I mean, it IS a classic of quiet peaceful power. 4 notes in it already paints a clear and awe-some picture. I'll keep on crossing my fingers for a good Conan project and for them to hire you! For now I'll just keep using your art in my background music rotation when I do a pen and paper Conan campaign.

I think this soundtrack, alongside hollow knight by Christopher Larkin, is genuinely what got me interested in classical music and drove me to playing (and now starting to write) music. I remember when Journey made it onto pc a few years ago and I was finally able to play it, it lived up to the great expectations I had after waiting for years. This new orchestration is truly incredible, such a gift. Thank you so much 💚

I’ve had so many amazing memories from Journey. Playing it for the first time was truly unforgettable, then completing it to get the white robes, and of course the experience of playing with a stranger that nearly had me in tears when we parted ways. The music was at the backbone of all of these moments and this orchestral remake makes them even grander and epic. Well done Austin and we’ll done LSO!

I have listened to "I was born for this" upwards of 10 times already in the last two days. The bounce when the choir comes in coupled with the jaw dropping, frission inducing climax at 54:43 has brought tears to my eyes nearly every time. Its such a magnificent piece of work. I know I am only adding to mounds and mounds of appreciative voices in this comment section, but gahdamn Austin.... My no 1 inspiration as a composer.

I first encountered Journey through its music, in a great performance of a Video Games Live Journey suite with Laura, Tommy & Co. I was immediately blown away. The music led me to the game, and I've been recommending it ever since. Journey was such a one of a kind project. Even when the game is no longer played, the score will endure. You will be studied and idolised and idealised by future generations of musicians. And even if your name becomes a footnote, your music will endure.

For me Journey represents a time when things were right in my life. A lot has been lost since and your music, Austin, brings me back to those times. When smiling and laughing was so much easier. In the game each of us find a way towards the mountain and towards a singular moment in sadness, awe, and triumph we restart. Back to the beginning. Wiser than we were, with the memory of at least one friend along the way. Thank you for bringing those feelings and emotions into a format we can all share together, once more, like we had 10 years ago.

Austin, about the Apotheosis track. That song has a life of its own. I can't even describe how well every instrument fits every second they exist in the song. Thank you for giving us these masterpieces. You are my favourite composer together with Stuart Chatwood. You've probably heard him, he made the Prince of Persia and Darkest Dungeon soundtracks. Man, a collab of some sort would be insane.

Stuart Chatwood is from my hometown, I saw and briefly met him with The Tea Party as a teen. Fantastic musician. I loved the Sands of Time OST too. I see Jeff Burrows and Jeff Martin in the area occasionally, haven't chanced across Mr. Chatwood again yet. Glad you enjoy his work!

I am not exagerating when I say this- this soundtrack, this game even, are to me, a perfect encapsulation of the human spirit. I have been studying for midterms all week and been quite doubtful of myselt as of late, and I come back to this soundtrack to remind myself that I am here for a reason, not to sound cliche, but I was born for this. truly this is a work of art that I can't wait to share with my children, and this is one of the few soundtracks that has moved me to tears. Word cannot express how much I love this game and this soundtrack, thank you for this Austin, truly thank you for this gft to the world.

I thank you for gifting this game to the world it really is an experience I will never forget and is truly an impactful thing to experience.
