In 2018, I took the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Osaka, and on to Himeji. It was an absolutely wonderful experience. I was only in standard class, but I got an ekiben box with some food to bring on with me, and the staff on the train was wonderful. The whole ride was incredibly smooth, everything was quiet and respectful, and every inch of the train was clean. Very nice food and beverage was offered to buy as well. As an American, I so wish that our rail in the United States was like Japan’s. In comparison, ours is absolutely awful, dirty, and looks like it’s stuck in the early 1970’s, with no offerings whatsoever. The only other near equivalent I’ve ever experienced to the Shinkansen in Japan, is the ICE high speed rail in Germany, on the DB. It was almost equally as nice even in standard class.

@cgimovieman wrote: "As an American, I so wish that our rail in the United States was like Japan’s." That won't happen, because the govt (federal/state/local) are too greedy on tax revenues from gas prices, AND the oil cartels and corporations (Chevron/Shell/etc) will lobby every possible way to make sure no transportation like Japan's. Besides American workers do not have ethics of Japanese workers. So mega projects like Japan's Shinkansen will never be finished/realized and over budgeted to the tax payers. The USA is a 3rd world-country in public transportation compared to Japan's. I have ridden CalTrains from South Bay Area toward SF for 4 years. Even the toilets on train cars' were overflown with excrements. Stink as hell. CalTrains have fatal accidents and can be late up to 4 hours without even an apology to the riders! Japan's trains Shinkansen or not is almost never late. And if it is, it's like 30 secs, and they issue apologies publicly over the platforms' intercom systems.

I went to both Kanazawa and Takayama in September this year, and I must say that Takayama's old town is much bigger and much better than Kanazawa's old town. It is also a lot less touristy and busy. Everyone should go to Takayama.

Thank you travelgeek for all your wonderful You Tube videos. I have been to Japan several times but now at the age of 76 in Australia I am mostly an armchair traveller. In 2015 I stayed at the best hotel (for me) in Kyoto, the Miyako City Kintetsu Kyoto Station. It is built on top of the Kintetsu Railway underground station between the Shinkansen station and the regular station. I chose a room overlooking the regular train tracks for some interesting viewing at night.

Another wonderful train trip! I love your videos, I'm so jealous of the train service you have available, American trains are like stone age compared to Japan! Keep the the videos coming!

1:02 This is how some horror movies begin. 1:07 That guy skipping along while in a hurry is the best way to get to work. 7:39 I would have thought Katakana would be used for "salami." Thanks for allowing me to practice reading Hiragana. 17:43 Are those a new style of randoseru? 27:25 Nice colors for those identical houses. Thanks again for another trip to a less famous destination. You should host your own travel show. Stay safe!

I think katakana is Japan’s subtle practical joke on the world, to suck you in and make you think “Oh, I’m a genius! I can understand everything, it’s just my language spoken in a borderline-racist accent!” and then, right when you’re feeling steady, with a snicker they hit you with the flood of kanji. 🤪 My other favorite thing is warnings in train stations, which are always phrased super-politely in hiragana - “Please, whatever you do, we request of you…” - preceded by a torrent of kanji. Christ Almighty, do I open this door!? do I NOT open this door?? do I stand clear of the door?!? or is this about the big red button!!?? Watching Japan’s residents trying hard not to laugh at our attempts to navigate is honestly contagious. For all the stereotypes about manners and order, most residents seem to have a wildly zany sense of humor and an unconcealed desire to gently mess with folk.

I'm amazed at how quiet it is (1:40). Yes, we can hear traffic and people talking, but I live in NYC; this city is LOUD. This scene right now is quiet.

I used to travel a lot and had days like yours with screaming kids wherever I went. Only consolation is that it’s worse for the parents - at least you have no responsibility and just have to tune out the din. The Gran Class food looked scrumptious. Makes me want to cry myself when I think how bad our trains in the UK - and the food on them - compare to Japan. Can we have your surplus Thunderbird trains when the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Osaka opens? 😂 Loving your videos, keep up the good work.
