Paramvir, a few things about Medellin and Colombia in general. 1) in general, Uber and related is tolerated in Colombia, but technically illegal. Cops will harass you and the driver. It happened to me in Bogota, but since I was not using Uber, the cop let us go. 2) crime is always a concern in Latin America, especially with Colombia's reputation. Medellin brings to mind the infamous cartel. Rest assured that since the death of Pablo Escobar, while not perfect, Medellin has become a lot safer, and more livable. These days many foreign retirees like to live in Medellin. I have been to Colombia and Medellin, and want to go back. As always, with Latin America, knowing Spanish helps. With any place, situational awareness is critical to your safety. Follow advice of the locals, and learn to make yourself a hardened target...or to prevent yourself from being a target. Would like to see you go into some of the smaller, less touristy, towns around Medellin like Armenia, Pereira, etc.
