The farthest mosque isn't even in Judea. It was in Somalia. Mogadishu houses the farthest Mosque from Mecca and Medina. Mecca is 1,493.77 km apart from Jerusalem. Mecca's distance from Mogadishu is 2,227 km. Somalis have said they were Exiles from Mecca who were loyal to Muhammad while he was alive. The idea that Somalia wouldn't house the furthest Mosque is laughable. So while Arabs claim the third holiest site is in Jerusalem on the Temple Mount. It is actually at the Arba'a Rukun Mosque, which has been speculated to maybe had been built in the 7th century CE. It is also speculated that the current Arba'a Rukun Mosque is a rebuilding of an older Mosque that goes back to the 6th century. This would also make sense given Arab-Islamic tradition since Ishmael is believed to be the son of a slave who is from Egypt and Egypt believed the holiest land was to their South in a place called Punt, which was likely in Somalia. So reason would stress that the Arabs from before the days of the Mongols might have had the same beliefs. And that the view of Jerusalem was an invention made centuries later to reinforce Muslim supremacy on Jews, especially when the Jews appear to be less willing to be loyal to their Arab-Muslim or Turkish-Muslim superiors. And when the followers of Muhammad became exiles, going to Somalia would be their best choice if the land was revered to them religiously. In order for a Mosque to be built at the Temple Mount, legitimately, the Jews would have to permit it which would be utter nonsense if anything knows anything about Jews. The current Mosque was one planted there when the Ummayads seized power as the Jews were showing signed of disloyalty in favor of the Khazars. Not really any different than when the Romans sought to build a Temple of Zeus there. Do know the Mosque is in fact older than the story used for its existence.

@Travelingisraelinfo I'm trying to understand two things about the fourth temple: 1. Why did Herode build such a splendid temple for the Jews? Wasn't he Roman? But it was still considered to be the second Jewish temple, correct? 2. If Herode built it and it was destroyed by the Romans in 70 AD it lasted not even for a full century, correct? thanks a lot!

@@sagittariusa7662 thanks a lot for shedding more light on this question but it's still puzzling. What I understand now is that Herode was actually a Jew himself and reigned as king as a vassal of Rome. But this temple was such an astronomically enormous investment, how did he finance it? And why would he get authorisation from the Romans for it in the first place if the Romans didn't have their own benefit from it? Because it was not only the temple itself, which was impressive enough, but the entire surrounding wall for the platform of 14 hectars and the entire platform itself. It's beyond imagination how much effort, cost and labour it must have taken to build such a gigantic construction! The wall is almost half a km long and about 20m high and maybe 16m in the ground. It's gigantic. In comparison, the Cheops Pyramid has a base areal of less than 5 hectars, just about a third! I can't imagine that the Jews in and off themselves would have been able to finance and build this without support from the Romans during a time when they had to pay tribute to Rome. And that leaves the original question: Why would the Romans finance / authorise such a gigantic building for the Jews? That's why I suspect that there must have been a Roman purpose for it. Even if the Jews call it their second temple. I hope that Oren, or anyone else, will be able to provide an explanation for this mysterium.

I still get a laugh when I read or hear the Western Wall refered to as the last remaining remnant of the Temple, even Solomon's Temple! We would heckle tour buses when we were digging along the southern wall when we heard the guides mis-comparrisons. If one really wants to get closer to Solomons Temple then go to the eastern wall where you see a seam in the masonary. The stones change from Herodian to the earlier period stones. And if you know where to look you may notice remnants on the mount itself. Unfortunately, the best preserved remnants are behind the Double Gate but only Muslims can access them. There are photos online taken by Leen Ritmeyer, chief architect of the Temple Mount Excavations, when he was granted access to document the remains in the early 1970's.

Shavua tov, dear Oren! As always, a wonderful video: well made, clear, informative, and interesting. The Talmud says that the Shekhina, God's earthly spiritual presence, travels with us in exile and stays in the Kotel, the Western Wall. After the Second Temple was destroyed in 70 CE, the Talmud also says, the Beit Midrash-- the house of (Torah) study and of prayer, became the "little Temple", the "Temple in Babylon (that is, Exile)". When the Third Temple is built, all those little Temples, the greater and the smaller, will be joined to it. At the start of Shacharit, the morning prayer, on Shabbat, we say: She-yevaneh Beit ha-Mikdash bi-mhera be-yameinu ve-ten chelkenu be-Toratekha, "May the Holy Temple be (re)built speedily and in our days; and grant us a portion in Your Torah." Amen. Be well, and as always, may God bless you and your family and all Israel, and the many friends around the world who watch and learn from you.

Orthodox married women cover their hair, with no more than the width of two fingers showing. Many of the young religious women, living in Israel have elaborate turban like coverings. But, the ultra-orthodox in the US and Europe usually wear snoods or wigs, and they brought that custom to Israel. Cutting off all the hair, before the wedding, is a right of passage. It is said the custom, of cutting all the hair off, came from eastern Europe, when Jewish women were often raped, shortly before their wedding, by Cossacks, so she would not be a virgin. So women, about to marry, cut all their hair off to be less attractive. I'm not sure that is a true story. Being Polish, you probably have your own horror stories about the Russians.

My second comment here concerning Jews going up on the Temple Mount (Please also see my first comment)... In 1165, (on the 6th day of Cheshvan) Maimonides, (Moshe ben Maimon - the Rambam), ascended the Temple Mount and prayed on the Temple Mount. This was the climax of a perilous journey the Rambam took from Morocco to the land of Israel. Rambam wrote with great emotion about his Temple Mount ascent.

There is a theory that the lower courses of the western wall are actually Hadrianic, as their style matches those of Hadrian’s other temple structures in Lebanon. "Shuckling: Why Do Jews Rock While Praying? The Swaying Candle By Yehuda Shurpin If you've watched Jews during Torah study and prayer, chances are that you saw some of them rocking back and forth. This swaying, or shuckling, as it is known, is so widespread that the classic Jewish work on philosophy, the Kuzari (also known as “In Defense of the Despised Faith”), written by Rabbi Yehuda Halevi in 1140 CE, discussed this phenomenon.1 In truth, there are multiple reasons for shuckling, and not all reasons apply to both learning and prayer. Additionally, there are times when it actually may be inappropriate to shuckle. In Jewish Law In the words of Rabbi Moshe Isserlis in his gloss to the Code of Jewish Law:2 People who are punctilious in their observance customarily sway when they read the Torah, recalling the Giving of the Torah that was accompanied by trembling, as it is written, “The people saw and shuddered.”3 Similarly when it comes to prayer he writes: This is also customary when praying, as implied by the verse, “All my bones [entire being] shall say, O L-rd, who is like You?”4 In other words, when we praise G‑d during prayer, we do so with our whole selves: the mind, heart and mouth express the prayer through speech, and the rest of the body does so by moving. Every fiber of our being is involved in connecting to our Creator. Petrified Before the King Others, however, claim that when standing in prayer before the King of Kings, one should stand still, just as one would do before a mortal monarch, not daring to move. Accordingly, many are of the opinion5 that only in the lead-up to the Amidah,6 during the Pesukei DeZimrah (“Verses of Praise”), is it proper to sway back and forth. However, during the actual Amidah, when standing as if before a king, it is improper to sway back and forth.7 (Some still sway very slightly at the conclusion of each blessing, in the spirit of the verse “Before My name, he trembled.”8) So what are we to do? The rabbis suggested that each individual follow his custom, doing whatever will help him or her achieve maximum concentration.9 The Candle of G‑d The Zohar10 quotes Proverbs, "The soul of man is a candle of G‑d.”11 The Torah is a flame, and when Jews learn Torah, the “candle of G‑d” (the soul) is lit on fire. Just as a flame doesn’t stand still, so too the Jewish soul, when lit, constantly moves about.12 And just as the flame constantly sways and flickers as it attempts to tear free of its wick and ascend on high, so too our soul is engaged in a constant effort to escape the corporeality of this mundane world and cleave to its G‑dly source.13 Additional Reasons In addition to the reasons outlined above, throughout the ages many have offered other explanations for this swaying: ● The Kuzari explains that in the days of old, when manuscripts were rare and hard to come by, ten or more scholars would often read from one volume. Each person would bend down during his turn to read a passage, and would then retreat to make room for the next person. This resulted in a continual bending and sitting up, and this habit continued even after more manuscripts became available. (This is also the reason why our books are so large.)14 ● Since Torah scholars would spend all day in one spot learning and praying, they would sway back and forth in order to get at least some minimal exercise at the same time.15 ● To the uninitiated, the constant movement during prayer can seem strange. The Baal Shem Tov explain: Just as when a person is drowning, no one would scoff at him if he were floundering about to save himself, so too, one should not scoff when observing a person making movements while praying, for he is trying to concentrate and stave off foreign thoughts.16 ● Swaying during prayer and learning, in fulfillment of the verse “All my bones shall say, O L‑rd, who is like You . . . ,”17 is beneficial for the body or “bones” after the person passes away. The verse speaks in the future tense, referring to a time when the bones shall rise up and sing G‑d’s praise.18 May this happen in this physical world with the coming of the Moshiach and the resurrection of the dead!" Interesting, I have never heard of the revision of the temple in the two hundred yr. period leading up to Herods extensive additions. It must have been just before the Maccabean uprising in the Hellenization period.
